bjourmu,

Thanks so much for checking on that Bayern dividing line thing. If Michel says the dividing lines surround four groups of 45 stamps, does that mean there were 11 1/4 stamps in each group? kinda' odd, literally.

And if this were the case, what do you think they would call the spaces between pairs without the dividing lines. (Scott vaguely differentiates pairs with gutters between.) Would this internal space fit the definition of gutter on an imperf like this?

And, doesn't this also mean that there would be pairs with 0 dividing lines, pairs with 1 dividing line and pairs with two dividing lines where two groups meet?

FYI "Scott" says "Full margins = 1mm. There are dividing lines between stamps."

Hi there if you still are there. Have a question about Duck stamps. I have a sheet of 30 on auction and I did some research about them. On one website are talking about errors , shifting position, and a "star" on the sky.How I never see a genuine copy , error or varietes how is called can you take a look at this and give me your opinion? Thank you

You have mentioned once that you may have a spare copy of a specialized South African catalog. Could you email me about it at afeht@aol.com, please?

An EUSC member did set up an alternate chat site when eBay began blocking members who were bringing to light the large quantity of bad material being sold on eBay. Ultimately they were able to get several thrown off of eBay. But, several paid the price for their service to the hobby. During that time it was impossible to discuss any questionable lot without eBay blocking members from posting, some were even blocked from bidding or selling, for up to 30 days. Eventually eBay would implement the Stamp Watch group. While it’s considerably improved, you can still find questionable material on eBay without a lot of effort. So, I expect that if eBay pulled the plug for having Liveworld run this site we’d quickly find another created (again) for our chat, or we’d go back to the old one.

Check out knuden’s link to that web site, you’ll see my familiar “Greetings” from 2005.

Evening/morning/afdternoon from a snowy NJ.

Happy birthday to all young and old philatetic farts. You know who you are.

re EUSC and disaster planning The StampChat+ website that K-E linked to is the continuation of a site that was originally to serve as an alternate site for discussing eBay listings, back in the bad old days before the SWC. It's still there and available should the need arise.

Hi all. I am a collector of US sheets (panes). I've been at it for a number of years, but I really never met anyone with the same collecting niche. however, the sheet category on Ebay seems to be very active. I also know a number of dealers who specialize in US sheets. I'm reaching out to ask if there are any other similar collectors out there. If so, I'd love to chat and compare notes.

stoopsitter2, if I read my Michel catalogue correctly regarding the first stamps of Bavaria, the dividing lines were not between each stamp, but between the four groups of 45 stamps in the sheet. So most pairs would not have this between them.

steve: thanks. I decided $20 was worth the look and joined up with Steiner -- the US revenue pages look like an easy and cost-effective start. I'll run off a set and see where it goes. (and hopefully I won't be convinced by the presence of pages into collecting too much else).

Aloha - Michel

Happy Birthday - David S

Good Luck - deannamerrill
and may you sell your stamp. I have it in good stead that if the stamp sells eBay will use the commission fees to fund a part time stamp expert to review listings on eBay.com. They will also buy equipment ( called Scott's Specialized) allowing eBay buyers to determine authenticity on a computer screen. In the mean time read all you can about stamps, not rubber!

Greetings all: stamps are not my area, but I like to try new things when I can pick up stuff at auction that is different than my normal interests. Bought a bunch of stamps and nothing much in the lot stands out except this little group.

About 20 Argentinian stamps, mounted on a sheet and dates noted under each. The dates are from 1892 to 1911. Just wondering if these are worth listing as a lot or if I should just toss them in with the group of South American stamps when I list. TIA for any advice. Pat.

Today in fact is my 49th birthday so we are not far apart in age. I see from your posts that you collect stamps from Tibet.
I have a small collection of Nepal stamps mint on scott specialty pages and used in my international pages. I picked most of them up in Middletown New York when I once visited the offices of Henry Gittner.

Jim and bill: thanks. I happen to hate making my own pages with a passion, unless it's for an exhibit, in which case I view the process as a necessary evil. Just not one of my favorite things to do. :) I suppose I should pony up for the Steiner website (there's probably something else I want there anyway) and see what the pages look like.

That 2cent Harding auction is amusing. If they are claiming a PSE 90 grade they should at least find a stamp without readily apparent damage. :)

Matt… I made my own album pages for both regular stamps and revenues. That way I can display more than one copy of a type of stamp, for instance I mounted two US Scott #70 stamps certified as “red lilac” but with distinctly different colors. I also prefer the catalog number to appear below the stamp rather than under it, so it doesn’t have to be lifted to see what it is.

Making pages is not hard to do. I do it in Word, using simple drawing tools.

balkania… For eBay to pull an auction, someone has to complain about it first. If someone complained about that one, and eBay let it run anyway, I can think of only two reasons:

—Someone at eBay is enjoying the joke as much as we did on the board, or
—Someone at eBay is as naďve as the seller and left the lot running in hopes at least one buyer will be dumb enough to fall for it.

paperhistory when I last had a subscription to Steiner's pages (probably 3-4 years ago), he had 8 files titled united_states_revenues_documentary (103 pages), united_states_revenues_future (6 pages), united_states_revenues_proprietary (11 pages), united_states_revenues_rest (40 pages), united_states_revenues_stock (44 pages), united_states_revenues_wine (23 pages), united_states_savings (11 pages) and united_states_semi_official_airs (16 pages, but probably not items you were asking about).

I would guess these pages are pretty complete, especially to house a sideline collection.

Chores for the weekend completed and now what time is left of the weekend is mine. Yippee !!

Mitch Should ebay ever decide to end the stamp board as we know it then I would indeed be sad to see the Eusc fold. The time for the Eusc to stand alone is, NOW and not before ebay decide to change the whole chat boards set up currently in place. Yes we should be grateful to ebay for allowing such sites to exist but I really do believe that it is only a matter of time before this site is closed down.

Yes the Eusc needs to stand on it's own and that is why I am of the strong opinion that it needs a philatelic Forum with a chat room of it's own.

I know Rainer has had difficulty in trying to stimulate interest on his own web Forum for Nepal etc but when such a site is dedicated to a specialist field then you are automatically ruling out thousands of potential members. Lets face it your average collector isn't into collecting by speciality. Most people tend to generalize and that isn't something I'm against in any shape or form. The point being that everyone here has an interest in Philately and that is what people want to discuss and talk about, no matter what the area.

Yes most Forums rely on the regulars to start off debates and exhibit material but that has always been the way with every society/ club worldwide. So it's not just a US or English speaking countries problem.

One way for the Eusc to stand alone I feel would be to have a yearly subscription. The amount raised could I think perhaps help with the set up costs of running a really good Forum and chat room. In this day and age most could easily pay via Paypal.

I'd suggest access be by password given to paid up members. With the password being changed yearly and ony given to those renewing subscriptions. New visitors to such a Forum could have limited posting capabilities. Thus not denying the inexperienced collector the chance to ask questions.

Another way for any Eusc Forum to survive is to accept limited sponsored advertising from dealers.

If I had the computer skills I would gladly set up such a Forum but sadly I don't.

As everyone knows the German ebay board was closed down a few weeks ago but thanks to a few it has resurfaced as the Briefmarken Cafe. Ok it's more a place where regulars get to chat about any subject under the sun but at least they have somewhere to go. Many there meet regularly now at stamp shows all over Germany which is never a bad thing. Especially when I get invited over for a free beer and Wurst :-) Then of course there is the Philaforum set up also in Germany which in my opinion is very successful. So it can be done "IF" the volunteers are forthcoming. I'm quite happy to vounteer my services in any way possible. It doesn't include computer skills I know but every little helps. If not then it is only a matter of time before we all lose contact with each other.

Anyway that is just my initial thoughts on the matter. Dare say others will have differing opinions but lets hear what they have to say and once and for all make some decisions about where the Eusc is going to go.

Matt H: As you know, some of us are cranky young farts, thanks very much.

balkania: I perused your links fairly quickly. Some of the stampless covers are very common and unless there is interesting content will probably sell in the $5 range. I agree with sayasan that the early links -- the military items -- will be of some interest (I rather like the 1793 Fort Henry item, which looks to have been carried by a military courier).

Some of the later items have a lot of potential -- for example the strip of 1 cent 1851 imperforates and the confederate cover at the end -- but they have serious condition problems. Hard to guess what else there may be.

But apparently no one has something to say not even a reply to my invitations i receive. On the other hands, I find many of them activly buying and selling on ebay so it is not a matter of time but apparently lack of interest.

22028,

It takes two to tango even in Tibet and high realisations have to do with competitive bidding. You will have to follow the market and react when new bidders with bankrolls have entered the market and then that is the time to sell,

Good Morning/Day/Afternoon/Evening!

Unfortunately, my experience from the internet is that stamp collectors is not a sociable group. Too many different fields of interests, too many niches and when you finally find someone with the same interests, they live a world apart. But then again, that is also the strength of the interenet - you can find material you would otherwise never have a chance of finding anywhere else.

Mitch,

I hear ya. I really found when I wandered away from the board that I kind of missed the cranky old farts who hang around here. It is a real community, with a stability and longevity that is remarkable, if you think about it. Too, lots of members have met offline for socializing and trading. So it stands apart from eBay, though we are indebted to the firm for providing the free venue.

I've had a lot of ideas for where else it could go. A better-designed website, or a 3D world like Second Life, or a YouTube group, would provide a richer media environment for us to gather in. There is really nothing exciting on the web for stamp people - VSC is poorly designed and hard to navigate, and the sites for the APS, Collector's Club and Linn's are pretty thin. SG offers more, but it's tightly controlled by one company and there's no sense of community from what I can see. I don't know what else there is.

We'll talk more. Insomnia is giving way to exhaustion. Alas I have to work tomorrow...

balkania,

At the risk of sounding pompous, I'd like to tell a little story from my own experience.

When I was getting back into stamps as an adult, about 10 years ago, I used to visit some of the bourses in Prague. To my naive eyes, a lot of what I saw often seemed to be very low-priced material. Once, for example, I saw a United States Zeppelin cover for about $15. This seemed like a bargain, and I was sure I could resell it for more. After all, it was a Zeppelin cover! The legendary Zeppelin! So I bought it, emailed a scan to a dealer in the US and asked him what he would pay me for it.

He said about $15.

So I sent it to him. I made no profit; but for the investment of my time and effort, I was rewarded with learning something about postal history in general and LZ 129 covers in particular (they're not as scarce as I imagined).

Moral of the story: generally, if someone is offering to sell you something for X, that's about the most it is worth. Bargains don't fall from the sky. When you buy stamps, consider it all an investment in fun and learning. Your covers look fun to me, but then again, I know nothing about them.

Bill Gross (who has spent more on stamps than every member of this board put together) said to me not long ago that whenever he takes out his expensive stamps to peruse, he "pays" himself for the pleasure of looking at them. In this way, he reckons, some of his best treasures have "earned" back many times what he paid for them - just from his enjoyment of looking at them.

I like that attitude.

MH Matthew my friend

First off the "Yellow boxes" are not really a subsidary of the EUSC. That is not to say the Eusc dosen't have some "direction" in what they contain? However, it is all rather murky to me, due to an incident that happened about 9 months ago (which I do not feel comfortable discussing)
Perhaps Bill S. can clarify this point.
The Eusc needs to stand by itself and the Yellow boxes need to stand, (by itself) as a extemely helpful repository of knowledge for people who read this board (whether they are EUSC members or not).

The first meeting of my tenure was dedicated to seeking a direction for the EUSC. To this date I have not recieved any solid ideas as to what that might be. Except for Peter, Matt and Bill and Alec (who kindly donated $100 to the club for whatever might be worthwile) no one has offered any substantial ideas (or help) to make the club
what it should and could be!
I have been thinking lately that it would be nice to add a database to the club site which would contain things that many collectors cannot find elsewhere. I thought a cross reference of catalog numbers for different countries from pertinent catalog publishers would be a great thing. Of course we would need volunteers who specialize in certain countries (and have the various catalogs) to implement this idea.
ANY TAKERS????

Your idea of a datbase for stamp shops would be great also.
Who wants to volunteer to assemble that?

The Eusc.org site contains info on all of its members. I have oftened wondered if anyone ever used that information?
It was no small task putting that together (by the people who came before me). But has anyone ever contacted another member with similar collecting fields to see about trading and sharing information between themselves. I would guess a couple but few more!

If they kill this board the EUSC will probably die. The question is; will anyone really care???
Very few were interested in making a dedicated EUSC chat board, which I cannot understand.

I really think the EUSC could develop into one of philately's best resources but who is going to do the work.
Maybe all those rich retired guys with nothing else to do but get those stamps they could not afford when they were kids.
I'm not one of them (rich) but I still like the hunt. Unfortunately I will still mostly be consummed with how to pay the monthly bills when I'm 80 (if I get that far) without a bi monthly paycheck from the MAN.

Balkania My understanding of the covers you showed below is to be honest not worth my trying to give you an opinion on as they are not an area I know much about. However as Richard F correctly tried to inform you they are only worth what someone else is willing to pay you whenever the time comes to sell. That is true for every single item in any of our collections.

You asked was $750 a lot to have paid ? In my opinion yes it was especially if you don't really know what exactly you have been buying. It's hard to explain in simple enough English but let me try.

For example I recently paid $1000 for a collection of German inflation covers. Now I only bid that much because I decided it was worth that amount to me. Before deciding my maximum amount I made sure I did some research and so I knew which items were the better rates, what I could use in my own collection and what could be sold / traded on at a later date. When buying I don't pay attention to what any of the catalogue's give as values. I know from years of specializing in one small collecting field what is common and what is rare or even unique. Likewise when selling I have no illusions about the value of something. I know I'll only get what someone else is willing to pay. I don't really worry about selling prices as I'm only a collector. If I was a dealer then it would obviously be a different story.

So in summary you only need to justify to yourself if the amount you paid is worth it or not. I know English isn't your native tongue and so many will make allowances for that. This is very much an International stamp board where for many English is not their native tongue. So don't feel shy or put off by lack of language skills about posting here. My German is far from perfect as it's self taught but I write in German boards all the time. At first what I wrote there was very difficult to understand but hopefully now I can express myself better than before & most German speakers can understand me.

Katrina Yes Walzendruck does mean exactly the same thing as cylinder / rotary printings. Cylinder is how native United Kingdom English speakers would describe the type of printing and Rotary American English.
I don't have a Scott catalogue so can't comment on how they describe stamp values. I can tell you that that the stamps on that particular parcel card are by themselves not very rare or even scarce. With postal history it is not always the stamps that make something scarce or valuable. It could be a cover franked with very common stamps but is also at the same time a very unusual or difficult postal rate. Of course sometimes you can combine a rare rate together with rare stamps but those are items you simply don't see every day. Yes I have a few rare or even unique items in my collection as do many others here. But most I think will tell you that they have found such things only after years of collecting and researching their own collecting area. Bottom line philately is a fun hobby & at the end of the day if it ever came to the point where money was all that mattered then that is the day I will give up.

Enough of my ramblings for now. I'll be offline a few hours as today is the day my wife has set aside for me to redecorate the spare bedroom. Usually a sign that she has the idea of guests coming to stay but has failed to tell me about it .....

D2, IO,

My sense from talking to people after a couple of recent sales is that in fact, there are some new stamp collectors out there at the top end of the market. People aged around 60 who have had successful careers and put away some nice cash, still have a competitive streak (hence the successful careers) and are looking to recapture a bit of the fun they had when they collected stamps as a kid - only now they can afford the good stuff.

I don't think this trickles down much to the ordinary stuff, except where grading has made it possible for them to competitively aquire splendidly graded copies of common stamps. That's where you see the $6 stamp go for $350 - it's the "nobody's gonna beat mine" attitude, and money's no obstacle.

I wrote about this recently here.

saphilatelics
Yes, it would be a great idea for the yellow boxes (which, by the way, are in desperate need of updating and redesigning!) Maybe that would be a good topic for a meeting Mitch? "Stamp shops and philatelic points of interest in my home town/state/country"
Then we could collect all the posts and make a little website out of them all at once...

Here, here and here are some scans of stamp shop listings from a philatelic directory I bought when I lived in Prague four years ago (2003). I think it's mostly up to date. Some shops had to relocate after the floods in 2002. (Po=Monday, Ut=Tue, St=Weds, Ct=Thur, Pa=Fri, So=Sat, Ne=Sunday)
The shop in Legerova I mentioned in my earlier post is actually the Filap shop in Sokolska (I was off by a block). You have to walk through to the courtyard in the back. Nice friendly old guys, they speak German, one of them speaks decent French too. They have some good stock in some areas.

Below are the bourses, from the same 2003 book. I can't vouch for whether the info is still correct, but I would guess that it mostly is:

Monday: Urxova street no 11, Praha 8 - Karlin. Even-numbered Mondays, except holidays (18:00-20:00)
Tuesday: Palac Charitas, Karlovo nam. 5, Praha 2. Every Tuesday except holidays (15-17)
Tuesday & Sunday: Dum armady, Vitezne nam. 4, Praha 6. Every 2nd and 4th Tues. of the month (17-18:30), and every 2nd Sunday of the month (9-11:30)
I never visited the above three, so I can't vouch for them. I did visit the following two quite often:
Wednesday: menza VSE, Italska street (look for the broad stairs of the modern building on the left as you go up the hill from nam. W. Churchill). Every Weds. (15:30-19). This is the one I used to frequent. It has 30-40 dealers with all kinds of good stuff. Also they have floor auctions, and you can get a beer in the hall next door if you get there before 5. Lots of fun!
Saturday & Sunday: Kulturni dum barikadniku, at the end of Mrstikova street by the Strasnicka metro in Praha 10. A little out of the center but worth visiting. Big and busy. Sat (7-12) and Sun (8-11).

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for all who answered on the photo corners but they are not the ones I remember, anyway, the next issue of "The American Philatelist" is on the way, will go thru then.

We had a fire alarm in our building yesterday evening and the building was evacuated. An apartment burned out in 9th. Floor while i am living in 11th Floor. No casualties..., fire fighters were on seen fast. A friend of mine took some shots with his video camera but the police asked him to delete the movie...(what he has not done of course but moved away silently..), well, no bad image should escape the Emirates...

I think what you posted is fascinating. I for one will enjoy looking them up, getting confused, looking again, writing someone, getting all excited about a find, getting all deflated when wrong, wondering who the writers were and if I know their relatives and if I am one of them because one of your covers has my last name on it, on and on. Covers are great like that. The task of understanding covers is not just arduous. It is impossible and therefore perfect. No right, no wrong. Probably no dough. So what?

Jim - What I was trying to say politely is that the covers shown are not worth $750 unless he can find another person who wishes to buy a pig-in-a-poke. The value is only in the play time he can spend on them to learn.

balkania… I’d afraid I don’t know the value of your covers, but I think what 1covers was suggesting was doing some research yourself and learning about the postal systems of the time period, and rates and routes and markings. I must tell you however that is a daunting task, which would take years and years of study. Although your items appear to be in good shape overall, this doesn’t mean they are automatically valuable. Only a specialist would know.

I will say this—if you have any 18th Century covers with October 5 dates on them I would be most interested in them.

?

Also, American covers with March 4th dates on them might be of great interest to me as well.

Thanks so much for all the information on the Kreuzers. I will get a scan up soon and look forward to your kind offer of help.

I enjoyed researching your parcel card: Are cylinder (Walzendruck) printings the same as rotary press printings? Because Scott's has color variations for the base stamp 50m without overprint: I assume yours is the bl and green rotary) If this is the correct base stamp, then the value with the surprint plus the 4x = ????.?? per stamp plus the other cool stuff? omg.

Is it tacky to choke on value on this board?

Thank you one more time for your "help" but I really don't need to write a " poem " about this covers. My English is bad and that's why sometimes words or phrases do not match with what I think. For you my words have a diferent mean for me other. How do you think I have an idea about this covers value if I don't have couple opinions? Probably your answer will be : Scott or ebay auction. I don't have a Scott catalog about this kind of cancels + for me it's hard to describe an early stamp because are to many varieties on one scott number. have a nice Sunday

Very well if you post now some European stamps and ask the opinion to the members , how you would feel when one of the members gives you a similar answer to yours? balkania - The covers are worth what you get paid for them when you sell them. So, I guess they were worth $750. to you. Have fun and maybe learn something about them.

You aren't going to make any money when you sell them whenever that is so might as well get some "play" value for your money.

Interesting.

It is usually the dealers who follow the buyers rather than vice verse, unless of course, they have potential customers who are unable to keep track of the market.

Jaywild / Alec -- Just doing my usual drive by and noticed the mention of the 720 milliarden card. I have a large parcel wrapping piece containing about 800 mlrd, at the 4x rate, hard to tell as there are obviously a few stamps missing, which could be different denominations. I don't have it at hand (I'm at the library) but as I recall it is either Nov 29 or 30 date. A wonderful piece I snagged on eBay a few years back.

I see now instead of Bidder 1, Bidder 2, they disguise the IDs but leave a couple of letters, I presume so you might recognize a friend or rival, but not enough to contact a stranger. An improvement, I guess, but I'd still prefer full disclosure.

It doesn't matter whether jaywild is here or not.
Just ask your question.
When he gets online he will read and perhaps answer it.

D2

It depends on what you define as "better items".
Covers are unique and the market price depends on how many people are interested in a particular item.

Stamps are generally not unique but the price is still dependent upon how many people collect them and how many want them.

Perhaps an influx of investors buying graded stamps has driven up the prices of ungraded stamps, but I doubt it.

I also doubt there has been a sudden increase in stamp collectors.

If anything, it may be a greater accessibility to stamps via the internet has increased the prices of stamps due to greater competition.

I may be wrong!!

NOIP, I have been watching some prices realised at various auctions and have noticed a huge jump in realisations for certain better items, some in multiples of catalogue values. There was also a comment at last Wednesday's Gibbons sale in Sydney where the Auctioneer realised the increases and informed the dealers in the room to quickly raise their pricelists to confrom with the realisations. Some of the catalogues are getting way out of hand with the published prices and the realisations and somewhere in the future printed catalogues will be a thing of the past and the web will be better suited to keep the prices up to date as they can be altered within days whilst printed catalogues can take years,

David B.

p.s. I am keeping shtoom what material it is but the fluctuations of the exchange rates have nothing to do with them.

Rainer, and others, for mounting covers we always use the german HERMA TRANSPAROLS #1301 fotoecken, extragross, supersize. They are transparent, with large corners so the covers don't slip out, gummed (not self-sticking), the actual 'clear' corner part is 2cm, and the white backing is 3cm deep. They are sold at all good camera/photography shops in Germany (and at a few in Australia if you look hard enough!!)
Unfortunately, the box does not have Herma's address on it.
Looks like this!

Matthew1999 and others

Thank you very much for the info. And as to Matthew's suggestion, that sounds like a chat board project. This board prides itself in being an international board, why not add a page to the links in the yellow box, something like "Things philatelic to do/see while in X". I am sure there are people on this board who could contribute entries for many major US and European cities, maybe Australia and Asia too.

Again, thank you, it's not that I was afraid of not having anything to do in Prague, but now I can look forward to doing something philatelic one or two afternoons. The bourse in particular sounds interesting. As a follow-up, this is a stamp bourse exclusively (well, and postacards, postal history I'm sure) or other things as well? And around when does it start?

saphilatelics,
In addition to the postal museum mentioned by infla-alec (yes, it is still at that address - by the river at the end of Revolucni), you should not miss the main post office on Jindrisska.
There are a number of stamp stores tucked into quiet corners of Prague. The most central one used to be one in a passage (Alfa-Pasaz) off Wenceslas Square, that sold mostly postal history and postcards. If they're still there, they could direct you to others like the one in Legerova (Prague 2), Veletrzni (Prague 7), or Krizikova street (Prague 3).
I also used to enjoy visiting the Wednesday afternoon bourse at the School of Economics (Italska street) and the weekend bourse in the hall at the end of Mrstikova street by the Strasnicka metro station.

I wish we had a website that provided 'city guides' for traveling philatelists around the world. This kind of question comes up all the time.

I didn’t want to go through any horror stories down the road, such as plastic that breaks down into road tar and sulfuric acid over the course of years…

Re photo corners Personally I use the corner mounts from Leuchturm which are archival. However when mounting covers I prefer to snip the corners off at an angle which I think prevents damage occuring to the corners of any covers during mounting. I also find this then allows the cover when in place to be more secure on the page.

Jaywild/ Jim I don't have any covers with such an equivalent rate in US trillions of Marks but I'm sure there are some out there. Chances are if existing they will be from the period 26-30 November 1923 and either a heavy weight parcel or as a Wertbrief,(insured letter).

To add to Jim's comments regarding Subway, here is a version which does say it is archival quality. AIAMC25 may also be suitable but you can't tell it from the page. Something's wrong with the html. I'd send them an e-mail and get their input.

Today I have been nervous as hell all day. I had asked a friend in Germany to go to one of the auctions there and bid for me on one particular item I really liked and wanted. There was the worry that something went wrong and he couldn't make it to the auction etc but thankfully all went well and now I am the owner of another nice German Inflation Parcel card.

It is from the postal district OPD Hannover and was used during the four times face postal period, that being from 26 Nov - 30 November 1923.
Multiple frankings of the OPD issues on parcel cards, especially from the latter postal periods are extremely scarce. The stamps are all cylinder ( Walzendruck) printings which can be easily identified by the lower sheet margins still attached. Simply sheet margins with the long coloured bars are always cylinder printed. Lower margins without these long bars are always flat(Plattendruck) printed.
I've spoken before about how stamps with the upper margin are rare because the sheet margins should have been removed. I need to check the reference books but I think OPD Hannover decreed that both the upper and lower margins from the sheets be removed before being sold. If so then this example will be that extra bit special also.

Price wise I am also very happy . Let's just say I got it at far below what my maximum bidding limit. I can't see my obtaining any more items this side of Christmas but needless to say I am delighted with an early Christmas present to myself.

Katrina Michel Spezial state the following dates for the 3 Kreuzer blue.
Plate 1 1849
Plate 2 Sept 1850-1854
Plate 3 Dec 1854-1858
Plate 4 May 1856-1862
Plate 5 Aug 1858-1862.

You can tell the different plate numbers apart by certain characteristics in the lower left corners.

As you can see there are I assume vast differences in what certain catalogues state. In my opinion by far the most useful information always comes from a specialized catalogue from the country in question. Yes it can be difficult to understand non English literature but in this day and age it is not so difficult to get help with translations and to make contact with expert collectors of virtually every philatelic area possible. Philately has no language barriers that can't be overcome.

Katrina There are one or two very experienced German States collectors who frequent this board and with a scan I'm sure more
help will be forthcoming.
However your mentioning silk thread versions guides me towards the Bayern ,(Bavaria) imperf series. Assuming this is the area in question then the 3 Kreuzer blue exists from five different plates, 1,2,3,4 & 5. These were made from 1849 until 1862. The 6 Kreuzer brown had plates 1,2 & 3 and again same dates of issue. So both would fit into the date on your cover and both would have the red silk threads.

But as I say a scan would be of far more help in getting you the exact information you want so please when you post the scan as a link please state again exactly what it is you wish to know about the cover.

Yes, my mistake, it is late here, Kreuzers not krones.

Confusing to me because the 1849 silk thread versions produced the 3 Kreuzer blue and the 6 Kreuzer brown, but this cover was not mailed until 1856. There are no 3 Kreuzer blue produced in those later years that I can find. Even in specialized.

But, if the stamps were saved and used later, then it could be the '49 versions, perhaps with a gutter to explain the missing dividing line although it does not seem wide enough for a proper gutter... although what do i know about gutters in 1849 because I don't even speak German and use Scott out of desperation.

I need to download drivers for my scanner, ugh, and will tomorrow. Thanks for trying.

Stoopsitter If you can post a link to a scan of the family cover it would help in perhaps you getting an answer. A description alone I'm afraid is not much help to me or most German area collectors as I / they don't have a Scott catalogue and most will use the German Michel catalogue. I'm not sure any German States stamp was ever issued with the value you stated. Certainly the currency was not in Krones. Kreuzer yes so you can see why a picture link would be of some help.

Check out the yellow box link further down to see how to post a link here. If after reading the helpful yellow box page you still can't scan and post a link here then contact me via ebay and I'll try to help you more.

below the arch… First, apologies for getting your name wrong…

It might be a good thing to hang onto that stamp, and if you ever get a chance, scan it and post a link to the scan on this board. There are people who can tell a fake just by looking at the scissor marks on the faked edge. Sheets were cut apart (as were coil stamps) by disc cutters which leave distinct marks, whereas fakers use scissors or razor blades.

German collectors: I have a family cover with a pair of A1A 3 krones (plus a 6) canceled 1857. I thought these stamps always had dividing lines surrounding each stamp but this pair has nothing printed between these two, still connected imperfs. There are dividing lines top bottom and side but just not in between. Any other thoughts on why?

Thanks for your input. This was my first thought when I looked at it. I had to go through the research to satisfy that part of me that still wanted it to be something that it probably is not. I think the perfs by them selves are approx 1/2 mm. This would work nicely into the conclusion that it was trimmed according to size given by srailkb.

balkania stamp #1 is from Great Britain, stamp #2 is Tangier - by an agrement between GB, France and Spain Tangier was declared an international zone in 1924. Stamps overprinted Morocco Agencies or surchared in Spanish currency were used there until replaced by KGV GB stamps overprinted TANGIER.

stamps #3 and #4 are in French currency (centimes) and Spanish Currency,(centimos)

below the search… I would guess that your stamp had a natural straight edge at the left. This edge featured a straight line of ink that was used as a guide for where to cut the printed sheet into panes. As far as I know booklet stamps did not show this line.

Someone thought they would turn your stamp into a megabucks variety and got out the scissors, but forgot to put on the magnifying glasses so they could make the cut straight.

Thanks for the info. I measured it and it is 21 at the bottom slightly under at the top. I am not feeling good about this one. Of course I would like to believe that I have one but it looks like to me that someone may have cut perfs off the right side. The cut is not straight so that it dips inward a tiny but noticeable bit. The left side looks like it is origianl and it is straight but there is a faint bit of color on it like it is the edge of a sheet. I am wondering if maybe it was a booklet stamp with the right edge cut off? I am having trouble with my scanner or else I would post a scan.

West Hawaii had some rain yesterday as well. It was heavy where I live, but nothing compared to 20 miles south. The rain gauges at Honaunau recorded an average of 1.86 inches per hours between 1 and 4pm. Heaviest was one 15 minute period of 1 inch. A few people have real damage to their homes, and the roads were closed due to rocks and boulders on the road, the only road! It sure pointed out where the historic waterways are located and how government seems to forget and allows building in "potential" flood zones.

Grading at higher elevations also seems to have contributed to additional runoff that in earlier years would have been slowed down and absorbed by the ground. Now it runs down roads that have no gutters or drains and goes pretty fast as everywhere is downhill when living on the side of a rock mountain.

I hope LA water soaked in and washed off the streets. Don't drive on the first rainy day of the season, the tires don't make contact with the road. Too much oil! )'>)

don't think I have seen you posting here before so a big hearty welcome to the chat board and a huge thank you to replying to one of my posts. Not many people do so I am most honoured and you will be most dishonoured for doing so.

I won’t attempt to get really intimate with you by calling you names such as you did me, â€pudgy sweetie’? come on, that’s a bit intimate isn’t it.
No, I shall call you â€Bro’. I’m sure you won’t mind. There, I thought you wouldn’t.

Bro, I need to put you right in one area. There is no fellow American as you put it. Mr AS-IS is by his own admission a person without a country so he can’t be an American let alone a fellow one to anybody.

I am not attempting awareness as you put it. I do not need to.

Goodbye fair Bro, I shall not reply again to you..

hello fellow stamp collectors,

Your help is required. I have been collecting stamps for 32 years but have recently been presented with a stamp that I am unable to identify.

There is an arabic 10 on the on the lower third of the stamp. On the left and right side of the stamp, in a chain like border, is a moon crest with the open part facing up. Inside the moon crest is a five pointed star. There are other symbols which are hard to describe.

Can anyone advise a website, whereby I can post a photo of the stamp in question, so that it can be identified ?

Thank you.

PattyBeads what Jay Jim says is right. If the collection were only worth a few thousand, you would have no possibility of tracking any of the stamps. However, with a valuable collection like that, the dealers your uncle dealt with over the years will have records of items they sold him, either through stock photos, their price lists, certificates or auction catalogues. Valuable stamps always leave a 'paper' trail from owner to owner, and are very difficult to sell on for their true value, without their certificates or provenance. Start with the dealers and auction houses he purchased from (his check book stubs or credit card records will give you their names). They are the people most likely able to assist you.
good luck

pattybeadsbeads... Sadly, you have a virtually impossible task ahead of you. Without even a list of what the collection contained, there will be no way to identify any of it if it ever turns up.

For the collection to be worth a lot of money, your uncle would have to have spent a lot of money acquiring it. Collections worth a million dollars cost a great deal of money to put together (you can’t just find or come across material of that quality), and if your uncle spent that kind of money he certainly dealt with either nationally known dealers or auction houses. Comb through his papers, and there will certainly be records of all his big buys, and through either the dealer or auction house he dealt with you will be able to locate images, which is absolutely critical to ever getting any of it back.

We have no pictures of the stamps. My Uncle Edwin Cherry had died and we packed all of his belongings in the U-Haul to bring back to our homes. We put a lock on the U-Haul and befor we left some one cut the lock and all they took were the stamps. We do know that he had Civil War stamps and U.S. History stamps from 1800 to present. Lots of binders and loose stamps and envelopes.

Jim: presumably it is a former name for DC's trial level court (where you'd expect to see a deposition). It seems an unusual name for a court, but NY follows the same pattern (the general trial courts in NY are "supreme" courts).

Chances of finding information about the lawsuit will be virtually impossible. Even today it is not easy to get detailed information on many trial-level court cases without going to the courthouse. Trying to find a courthouse that still has good records from 130 years ago....

belowthearchcollectibles, the width of a 317 is something like 21.5mm (and yes, it varies) but 99.99% of the "317's" with the "exact" width are fakes (...that number might be conservative.) In other words, don't start celebrating if the width is "right."

If you think you might have a 317, post a high resolution scan and let us have a look. We might be able to tell you why it's fake and save you the expertization fees :-)

Greetings, I have a question about the US Scott 317 coil. This is my first time posting. Would anyone happen to know what the proper width is on this stamp? Probably more important, is there a standard size on this coil? I have been reading and discovered many consider these to be experimental coils. If I undestood what I read properly there were a number of ways these were printed and cut. Does that mean that there could be different widths? I know it is a rather specialized bit of information. Thanks in advance to anyone who may be able to shed some light on this for me.

balkania… The normal position of a grill on a stamp is roughly in the middle—see here for illustration. The normal stamp is on the left, but if the page of stamps is run through the grilling press without being aligned side-to-side the result is that the grills fall on the borders of the stamps, meaning that both stamps will show a partial grill. This is known as a “split” or double grill. If the misalignment causes partial grills to appear in each of the four corners, the stamp has a quadruple grill.

I don’t know what might cause a sextuple grill, but is probably a combination of a multiple grill and the accidental folding of the sheet of stamps as it goes through the grilling press.

Balkania While I'm NOT an expert on grills in any way, the douple, quadruple, and sextuple grills found mentioned in Scotts, basically indicate the stamp went throught he grill press multiple times (resulting in whatever grill patern overlapping itself). You're dabbling into the realm of the deep pocket big boys of philately, if sextuple grill varieties are your chosen specialty. I belive any examples rate in the multiple thousands of $$'s each.

For starters be VERY leery of any grills offered on EBay. Heck, be lerry of rare grills offered anywhere. Faking grills is a long perfected MO of many a forger.
Best to find an experienced philatelist, who has many genuine examples squirreled away, and a desire to mentor you FIRST, ....lest you learn the hard way via a much lighter wallet.

Peter, it doesn't look right, compare the last E of Revenue with any examples you have of the high values.

Poppadawg, the cancel on the North Korean postcard is the same which was used on the Post Office inspired reprints of 1952-4 period and I would therefore presume that they reprinted the Postal Stationery as well and applied the same cancel,

Help wanted.

I have been discussing the validity of this stamp belonging to a colleague from another board, SG29 the one pound value from British Central Africa. My concerns are:-

1. All sides the perfs have straight cut edges, not unusual if cut from a pair but from a block? Also perfectly centred is unusual in this series.

2. The cancel is very rough and has the appearance of a rubber cancel? BCA normally has very clear cancels.

3. The colour appears faded which might imply cleaned fiscal?

I hope I am wrong! Any comments welcome.
cheers

Peter

NOIP… Here is an interesting item for you history buffs. This letter was sent by Arthur McClellan, brother of George, who at the time was commander of the Army of the Potomac. (He signs his name Cap’t & A.D.C [aide-de-camp]). It refers to a letter that will be passed under flag of truce through Confederate lines at Norfolk, home of the Navy Yard. This letter was sent October of 1861—the rebels gave up Norfolk permanently the following May.

balkania05… Members of the U.S. Congress have free-frank privileges, which means they can send mail on their signature. Those from the 20th century are printed signatures, but in the early years of the 19th the senator or congressman signed the cover personally. I have two such covers from Charles Sumner, the Massachussetts abolitionist who was savagely beaten, almost killed actually, on the Senate floor by Congressman Preston Brooks of South Carolina. (Sumner had indelicately related slave-holding to whoremongering in a speech to the Senate, and Mr. Brooks took personal offense.) At the moment I don’t know where the covers are, or I would post a link to one.

Roger… Your story about the letter that was returned to Switzerland illustrates what’s wrong with the way the P.O. assesses their mail handlers. They are rated solely by amount of time spent per piece of mail processed. Mind you, processed doesn’t mean dealt with properly, it merely means passed on to the next station in line. You know why your letter was returned to Switzerland? Because it takes only 1/10 of a second to mark something RETURN TO SENDER and flip it on its way while it would have taken maybe four or five seconds to figure out where the letter should have gone.

I am not kidding you—postal clerks are rated for promotion and raises based on how many pieces they process per minute, and thus the system literally begs to be abused. There is no incentive whatever to do the right thing. When my father lived in Wickenburg AZ all his mail went through the central Phoenix P.O., and they had the RETURN TO SENDER game down to a science.

Thanks for taking the time to provide me with feedback. I guess I'll lower the starting price :-(

I had saved these all these years hoping that if I ever got into a bind I could sell them... and now is that time - laid off due to a merger after 25 years with the company and 1.5 years short of a pension...

Oh well... time to break out the Springsteen collection :-)

This is the guy for you mastermind!

Iomoon -

I've had a letter returned to Switzerland by a local sorter that lacked the 5 digit zip code. Kailua-Kona only has a single zip code, and the letter arrived in town without the zip. One would think the sorter/carrier would look at the address and deliver the letter. No zip needed once the letter was here, but no! It was returned to Switzerland with a mark - "Insufficient Address".

The seller in Switzerland kindly included the envelope allowing me to make a trip to the office of the postmaster and ask, "Watzup?"

He apologized.

Hi - I was wondering if eBay is the best place to sell my stamp collection. I collected them when I was a boy - about 40 years ago and have a lot of late 1800s and early 1900s + some 1st day covers. I had it appraised for ~$950.
I'm thinking I would start with a $250 bid.

I have the photos of all the stamps on Shutterfly at:

bjornmu Just read your earlier post regarding the FIUME postcard. You are correct in reading the date as 1919 instead of 1914. Hungarian cancels from that time period had the year FIRST, without the first numeral. In this case, 919, is the year 1919.

Notice that the firm takes and lists consignments for sale on E-Bay so maybe with their large number of listing it was listed by a inexperience staff member and no its not right to lose a job because of a customer complain .So lighten up and return the stamp for a refund undamaged as sent out by them so a owner or manager can review it .

NOT very outstanding from where I am looking at it.

It is very clear to me they knew exactly what they were selling, unless they confess to not knowing anything about stamps.

I and any collector with reasonable knowledge would look straight at the margins to check they are all there with no added backing.

1covers agree but I went off their APS life member status and made the mistake of thinking they were genuine and would describe an item correctly and not describe to defraud the collector.

With PayPal it’s not up to the buyer to ask for Registration. PayPay requires the seller to have the package traceable electronically where the status of the package is available on the internet. When the seller mails the package any other way they are doing so at their own risk. By that choice they are self-insuring the lot and PayPal collect for the buyer at any time.

Roger… I think you are correct. PayPal would deduct the payment from the seller’s account. PayPal is the insurer, not some third party, and as with any insurer, they will make good on the claim but use whatever resources they have to reimburse their outlay. In the case of eBay sellers, that means debiting the seller’s account.

Paul... Was NY Stamps the firm that bought your paving business???

D1-----Good to hear the firm is offering a refund .It also worth mentioning that the firm should be commended for offering such a refund on your first request . The firm has been more than a outstanding member of the E-BAY community {almost 19,000 positive feedbacks with only 13 negatives .Truely a outstanding member who offers new collector and old collector reasonably price lots .

The A.P.S. is honored to have such fine member who would go the extra mile to help out those buyers who use poor judgement in their purchases .We all can sleep better knowing such fine stamp dealers are on the for front in dealing with unreasonble customer who throw a fit and act up before a respond is foth-coming .We must use this firm to show others how understanding a power-seller can be.

You should also consider that a low grade employee could of listed it or a person like many here have a limited philatelic knowledge and fly off the handle so easy posted that listing .So the owner of the firm looks like he is more than reasonable and offering a refund .......I salute him and his kindness .

Am I correct that Paypal deducts the refund from the seller's account? If so, I don't wish to have that happen as I didn'tt ask for registration, etc. If it is an "insurance" issue, I'll make a claim.

Interestingly enough one of the sellers always sends me the items with an invoice for the total amount, rather than having me pay prior to shipment. My quandry is whether I send him the ˘15.00 for something I never received. I will, but I'll give it a little more time as I ponder the coincidence of two missing envelopes within the same week from Switzerland!

Milenko… Yes, that is a Barry machine cancel. That type is pretty common, but some of theirs, the experimentals especially, are quite rare and valuable. Your example shows a very nice black “feeder track” across the top. As Russell Hanmer states in his Guide (and everyone who knows about Barrys will agree) “Barry cancels can be very messy”.

Thanks for showing it.

Roger... If I may beg to differ a little, it might be a case of seller oversight with any other seller, but those guys have made a lucrative career of passing off stamps they know perfectly well are not what they seem. I think it’s also telling that they are not willing to have the stamp destroyed now that there is no question it is bogus. If it were a simple oversight, the honorable thing to do would be to destroy the stamp. My money is on D1’s guess, that the stamp will eventually show up again for sale somewhere else, and in time someone will fall for it as genuine.

Balkania The answer to your question about the blank cards with a cancel from David B is correct. What you have are what is known in Germany, Austria and Switzerland as , "Sonderstempel" Such cards and cancels are very common and of very little value. That said some collectors do collect such cards and cancels. But usually when in relation to their home town. The cancels are often available at philatelic events. Sometimes these cancels do appear on the first day of a stamp issue also.

Happy to return it thank you, can i go further as you are an APS member i would like a refund via paypal then i would like to tear it up and send you a scan of it so we can take this off the market, this stamp has been discussed on the ebay stamp chat board where i showed an enlarged picture of the back. Interesting reading about "as is", not he descriptive term bu the fact that there is no mention that the buyer has made any effort to contact the seller and ask for full refund!
This is a situaiton that shoul dnever have come to the Board until an attempted resolution ended. I don't mind reading about auctions going bad when sellers don't respond or return offensive emails, but at this point there is no evidence of such a response from the seller.

Isn't it a basic fact of life on eBay that the greater the volume of "business" sellers, the more likely it will be the description is not necessarily correct.

Come on, think! The seller was offering a stamp that should have a certificate if it is correctly described.

In the mean time two lots I bought from Swiss sellers between Oct 17 and 22 have gone missing in the mail. That is theft and I have no recourse since I have no idea where the items went missing. I'm thinking local!

[Repost, to try to make it a little more readable, and hopefully with successful html to indicate quotes.]

From here: http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/selling-stamps.html

eBay does not permit the sale of stamps that are fraudulent or improperly described. Sellers who knowingly fail to disclose information about the authenticity of a stamp, alterations to the stamp, or other information that might have a material impact on the stamp's value may be reported to the American Philatelic Society.

And on this same page, if you click on the link for "Show" Additional Information, there is this link:

http://www.stamps.org/ebay/ebay_code.htm

From there, the first paragraph appears to provide wiggle-room for selling "as is" for condition:

I agree that the term "As Is" or similar language may be used only to describe condition. It can never be used to comment on authenticity or to excuse a misdescribed item.

However, the sentence immediately following specifically adds:

Furthermore, I agree to use the term "As Is" or similar language only after having described all known faults including those not evident in the picture of my items.

(All emphasis mine.)

Hope that's helpful.

Sellers who knowingly fail to disclose information about the authenticity of a stamp, alterations to the stamp, or other information that might have a material impact on the stamp's value may be reported to the American Philatelic Society.

And on this page, if you click on the link for "Show" Additional Information, there is this link:

http://www.stamps.org/ebay/ebay_code.htm

From there, the first paragraph appears to provide wiggle-room for selling "as is" for condition:

I agree that the term "As Is" or similar language may be used only to describe condition. It can never be used to comment on authenticity or to excuse a misdescribed item.

However, the sentence immediately following specifically adds:

Furthermore, I agree to use the term "As Is" or similar language only after having described all known faults including those not evident in the picture of my items.

(All emphasis mine.)

Hope that's helpful.

Thank you Jim for the reasoned response. None of the warnings regarding selling stamps mention anything about "as is" listings (only about fraudulent items).

My point though was about the stamp that de66 bought and how Ebay seems to enforce "as is" disputes.

For example if you purchase as-is item #160183164587 (which claims no thins or creases) and you find a thin or crease, you can file a not as described complaint, even though the lot is listed as is. On the other hand, if you purchase as-is item #330191700130 (which has no representations at all) and you find faults, the remedy is up to the seller alone.

tevel… There is a long history of trying to clean up fraud in the Stamps category that you might not be aware of. One of the resolutions to the problem was that eBay agreed to hold sellers accountable for all items they sell, and specifically that adding the words “as-is” to a lot description absolves the seller in no way of this obligation.

If a person lists stamps on eBay, the last step in the process is a screen which warns the seller that he will be held to the strictest standards in terms of ethics.

Well smudger, I will of course bow to the knowledge of someone with 1 feeback, but please read again what mini*lindy wrote:

NOIP… I hope folks remember the spirited discussion we had of NY Stamps on the board some days back. (Paul mentioned that he and NY Stamps were bidding on the same material at auctions, and mentioned that they (he?) were friends of his.) This is exactly the kind of transaction they are famous for, and the folks at SCADS have been after them for years.

D1... I think David Benson has the best idea, except instead of asking to have the postage charges refunded along with the purchase price, you have a right to expect the entire amount paid without question, and you should behave toward the seller as if you do.

Further, I would suggest that anyone who advocates the passing out of slaps so freely has perhaps been kicked in the skull one too many times during certain “recreational” sports. Or perhaps seeping asphalt has finally begun to invade the synapses therein. Just a thought…

As is means that an item is being sold in whatever condition the seller alludes to and the buyer has to accept all faults. However, the "as is" disclaimer does not apply when the seller misrepresents the item.

I would think that "uncommon large margins ... but the stamp looks OK" is a misrepresentation.

balkania,

they are different ships.

They are very nice covers and if they were in better condition they would realise a lot of money on the Japanese market as there is huge demand for unusual rates and usages of that period. I still wouldn't be surprised if they create a lot of interest in Japan and time will tell if the condition hasn't stopped the bidding,

Understand BUT but if AS IS means the stamp has a repair/rebacked/margins added then as an APS member the seller should have well and truly known better. To me AS IS means WYSIWYG. If you look at the back of the stamp you can also see where an owners mark over a thin has been 80% covered with a whiter paper at lower right.

I just read the description, good luck you'll need it,

" SG # 3 , SG CV Ł800 ($1600). Uncommon Large margins (thus AS IS), but the stamp looks OK. Please see back of the stamp yourself. ".

I'm shouting on purpose,

" UNCOMMON LARGE MARGINS(THUS AS IS)"

Go straight to the APS website, do not pass go, go straight to complain about APS members and write your letter of complaint mentioning the wording in the decription,

ps. looking at your scan I would presume it is a clipped copy of s.g. 6 and there is no way that the seller didn't realise that those margins weren't original,

knifeknips - presumably you are asking about stamps from Portugal and not a Portuguese colony. Scott breaks down issues by normal postal issues, semi-postals under B prefixes, Airmails under C prefixes, postage dues under D prefixes, ad nauseum. It can be confusing to a newcomer. You most likely have not looked in the right place. If you can post a scan link to the board some catalog-queen can certainly point you in the right direction.

Tiffany's lawsuit against eBay has finally gone to trial... it'll be interesting to see how the judge rules. Quite a lot is at stake for all categories, not just fancy jewelry. If the judge decides eBay has to do more to police brand-name forgeries, parts of the site may be in for some big changes. But I'm not holding my breath that the safeguards will apply to stamps and coins.

On the other hand I find it dishartening that it is obvious the seller knew it was fishy, is an APS member, and isn't this the type of crap the APS is supposed to be trying to monitor / end?

I would think this should be brought to the attention of the APS ethics guru if a swift settlement (refund) is not withcoming from the seller.

pastorjohn - while lindy's (howdy lindy!!) suggestion has merit keep in mind you are dealing mostly with 10c - 20c items, perhaps a few higher, and quite possibly a lot, lot lower. You might be better off offering them as a bulk lot with lots of scans of what looks more interesting or appealing to you.

Collectors are more interested in whether they are shorter personal size covers, or long business size covers, and the ratio of hand cancels to machine cancels.

I don't know how many are in a 30-year collection, is this all your incoming mail over the past 30 years?

Breaking them down into too small lots could make as much money for eBay, paypal, and the post office as you will get.

Try a search using the search word covers* with asterisk and you will see what is currently offered. Do the same for completed auctions. That should narrow your options based on how much time you wish to devote to the project. Resellers are always looking for unpicked lots on eBay.

Terrence,
Although I grew up in the north, I've lived in the south for almost 30 years. I had been trying to talk my wife into moving back north for several years (she grew up in New York state) ..... until I took a temporary assignment in Somers NY in 2002-2003. That winter we had a 20+ inch snowfall. I told my wife to kick me if I ever start talking about moving north again! (Parenthetically, it was during that assignment when I met Jim in NYC at a stamp show, enjoying the show, his company, and a New York hot dog from a street vendor).

Although it snows in Austin, TX, it is infrequent and doesn't last long.

Jim,

Wow - no snow for 30 years! I grew up in northern New Hampshire and can't imagine not seeing snow for even a year! I now live in Putnam County, NY (60 or so miles north of NYC) and find the winters here really whimpy. If it's not 20 below zero with a few feet of snow on the ground it ain't winter! Happily, I spent Thanksgiving in North Troy VT (right on the Canadian border) and there was snow there.

For any collection condition of the individual items is most important. The seller should know that. You can have many stamps in the run from Scott # 4 to Scott # 75 that don’t meet the specified conditions for the catalogue price. I’ve seen a lot of stamps sell for 10% of catalogue value or less because they are damaged in some way. What you really need to know in order to make an intelligent offer is the market value of the specific collection. There are also some stamps in that run you’ll need to be an expert no or they need to have a certificate. You can get hurt if you value a stamp as one thing when it’s not that but something else. It takes years of learning and study to be able to work it all out. If you’re new to a stamp collecting area it’s still easy to get taken. If someone gave me such an opportunity it would take me a several days of work to come up with an offer. That offer would not be based on catalogue value, but market value for stamps in the condition offered.

Jaywild, to repeat, you certainly took care in selecting your revenues.
Stamp for stamp your centering is generally better than mine.
That's probably one of the reasons my collection is more comprehensive than yours.
I was willing to accept Fine centering (perfs or margins not cutting the design), and mostly made that criterium.
My other main criterium was that the stamp unquestionably be what it's supposed to be as much as possible.
That means large margins on the imperfs and part perfs.

But I found that might not be enough.
I had one that had all the attributes to be an unlisted part perf (dollar face value as I recall.)
One dealer said submit it; another said save your money.
It came back as a "c" with bottom perfs removed; it was a margin copy so the top margin was very large (1 cm) but unperfed.
The consensus was it would never be authenticated as a part perf until a pair, imperf between, was found.
Would have been nice to have had the "discovery" stamp.
