D1… That Lindy cover is in pretty sad shape. It’s dirty, creased, raggedly opened, and the markings are smudged. Usually they are only collected if pristine. The multiple marks don’t really add much. I see none that aren’t very common.

greenwave… Airmail from Newfoundland consists of a postal clerk throwing the item through the air in the general direction it is supposed to go, then another one picks it up and does the same, etc., etc until the item reaches an actual postal stream some months hence.

I have never encountered a slower postal system in the entire world.

Sorry if the above offends anybody, but I have sworn to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

Ken S… Interesting, because 12% inflation matches almost exactly my example below of what’s happened to the price of French bread at the store around the corner.

The fact that true inflation is much higher than what is reported is another reason the dollar is deteriorating relative to other currencies. No matter how much inflation numbers are twisted to achieve a desired result, the reality will always show up in the strength (or lack thereof) of the currency. You will note that the dollar now is being compared to a “basket” of other currencies, which sadly is merely another scheme to make its slipping value less obvious.

Just a quick note--I'm still here, but not able to post images.

AIRMAILS

My favorite airmails for the bridges are the first issues of Honduras, 1925 overprints on 1915 definitive stamps, half of the 8 values depicting the Ulua Bridge. These are all truly rare, issued in numbers between 4 (!!) and 500! (The 4 is the Black Honduras, one of the World's stamp rarities from any point of view. Only two known to survive now.)

One of the highlights of my collection, which I have shown here in years past, is a genuine commercial cover bearing one of the 500-issue stamps.

For the nudes, it's hard to top the 50 lepta Greek airmail from the 1930s. I have a nice mint single, would love to find a block of four and a true commercial usage.

All for now.

JayJim, interestingly, here in Australia, the postal rates increase twice a year (Mar and Sept) but not the basic .50c to post a standard letter. Parcel rates, 'services' such as Registered or Insured, large letters (non-standard) etc. all get price increases. Now the average man-in-the-street, only sees the 50c on a letter and thinks postal rates never increase, but of course business (and ebayers) know differently.
So, the general population think the Post Office are the steady 'good guys', particularly as they get a 05c reduction to post Christmas Cards every year.
The reason it's difficult to increase standard letters here is that we dont have 1 or 2c coins. 5c is the smallest, so the next standard letter increase will be from .50c to .55c

California Clipper - New Caledonia August 1940

This is an example of an early commercial (non-philatelic, non-souvenir) Clipper cover from FAM-19. Postmarked Noumea, New Caledonia on 19 August 1940, this cover caught the northbound Clipper flight out of Auckland. After leaving Noumea the plane stopped to refuel at Canton Island, then on to Honolulu, to Los Angeles then San Francisco. Including a crossing of the Dateline this trip took 3-4 days.

Lloyd… Interesting. I did notice the two “wedding stamps” but thought they might be merely contingency issues.

Ken S... Yep, the reporting of inflation has really become a joke. There are dozens of ways of getting around reporting the truth. For example, we have bottled water delivered, and instead of raising prices last year, the company introduced a “fuel surcharge” into its pricing. The water still costs the same as it did 5 years ago, but the surcharge is bumped up every time there’s an increase in gas prices. The result? The government officially views the price of bottled water as not having changed, which is laughable.

They also monkey with adding increases in fuel and food prices to the CPI. If the price of gas goes up the CPI would naturally shoot up too, but it doesn’t, because the government has worked out a way to factor those increases in without presenting the appearance of a sudden uptick in inflation. So these increases are modified by arbitrary factors to such an extent that their impacts virtually disappear. The savvy consumer is left to gauge true inflation on his own. I use food prices, particularly those items I have bought over the course of years, fresh baked French bread from my local market, for instance. Maybe 4 years ago the regular price was 99ą a loaf—now it is $1.69, but you won’t find that jump accounted for anywhere in the government’s inflation figures.

Lloyd & Jay, the good news for us is that the government (intentionally) under-reports inflation, and is certain to continue doing so. Remember, big government expenses like Social Security COLA and "psychologically important" numbers like GDP are greatly impacted by inflation. It's in their best interest to report the lowest possible number, and they never disappoint.

My guess is that even with annual rate increases, the USPS will be begging for a change within 5-10 years. The meager CPI bumps won't cover their true cost increases. They'll quickly fall behind.

For a while I was collecting George VI of Britain and Commonwealth (mostly disposed of now.)
One thing that intrigued me was the relative lack of air mails in this group.
Considering the global nature of GB&BC, I would have thought there would be a lot more air mail stamps.

I mostly collected just stamps, but for the air mails I did also collect covers.
You may remember this one:

South Africa [165kb]
Philatelic, but otherwise a lot going for it.

Jaywild: We anticipate a rate hike in May. There are indications that USPS Stamp Services does, too. The USPS now follows new, streamlined guidelines that allow it to change rates no more than once a year and by no more than the rate of inflation. (See VSC message 28812.1.) The cynics among us (myself included) therefore expect rate increases every year.

Among those indications: Why else issue another set of Wedding Stamps if not to cover new rates?

My favorite airmails are the first ones issued by Greece in 1926. I think they are extraordinary for their time, and just magical. Somewhere in my acquisitions is a first day cover of the set, picked up from an exhibit of FDCs of first airmails. (I would have loved to have had the whole exhibit!) Maybe I'll have uncovered it by the time this subject rolls around again!

Greece 1926 airmails

I agree with Mitchell about really enjoying airmails, and I have thought about it as an opportunity to build a somewhat more manageable worldwide collection. It does seem like, with most countries, they went to a little more trouble with the designs and the printing of the stamps -- kind of like they were creating a premium product for a premium service.

Unfortunately, imho, Japan wasn't one of those countries, and their airmail stamps don't really grab me, which is why I have this wandering eye for other countries.

World Wide Air Mails:

Bulgaria The last set of three on this page was obtained in the last year. The catalog value on this set has risen more than any set I can think of in the last couple years. Not sure why (probably supply and demand), but will cost you many many times more than it would have a couple years ago.
I wish I could predict the future on stamps or sets that will do the same in the future.

Hope I did not screw up all that HTML

Bruce, there are huge holdings of most Europa issues involved, mainly Spain, Portugal, Azores, Madeira and most Western European countries from the beginning of Europa issues up to about 2003. The problem won't be the devaluing of most of the early items but the late 1990's to 2003 will be enormous as the quantities involved is some cases is 90% of the printing.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm going to hold out and see what I find on eBay. I'm juts irritated right now, Each time I go to "delete" a letter or word I hit the delete key and it may or may not jam. Which means I have to look everytime to see what's going on. A single key stroke does not mean anything deleted! "V" is sticking down, and other keys feel heavy rather than equal, so I now tend to "hit" keys, rather than press them gently. )'>) Sort of like a sledge hammer to fix a small dent in the car fender.

Sounds like you have upgraded significantly, and are in the process of experiencing a new level of internet capability. have fun.

This 1917 Italian stamp
Posted by antonius-ra   ( 666 ) on Dec-29-07 at 10:07:51 PST   Listings
As far as I know this 1917 stamp from Italy is the first airmail stamp of the world.
As with many of the first airmail stamps it was an exsisting stamp that was overprinted (often times to celebrate an experimental flight). I'm not sure what the first airmail stamp was that was not overprinted. Possibly, the first U.S. set which was issued in 1918.

Looking for any suggestions on what to do with damp or wet books...

I just received 2 hardbound stamp books sealed in a Postal Service "oops" plastic bag. They were in a priority mail envelope that got wet at some point, and then tore open in several places from subsequent handling (seems like the envelope got "soft" where wet). Once torn open, the entire wet envelope and contents was then put in a plastic bag and sealed!

Any thoughts on how to dry and/or minimize the damage is much appreciated.

Sorry for my tardiness in calling the meeting to order. It totally slipped my mind last night.

For starters here is the latest addition of airmails to my collection. 1936 Hindenburg and Graf Zeppelin from Liechtenstein. I've wanted these for a long time but always get outbid. They're not really expensive stamps but as with most Zeppelin stamps they usually bring a very high percentage of cat. I was quite happy to pick these up for 50% of cat on Ebay with a "buy it now".
Zeppelin collecting is very popular and there are quite a few collectors that collecting nothing else.
I really like the colors of these two stamps also. They're reeeeeeal purdy.

Still hoping to pick up one or two more gems this winter.There is a good group of stamp auctions coming up after the first of the year ,which would be right in line with the maturity of a few CD's which came from the sale of my paving business .Now all I need to do this year is sell the paving maintenance business ,but that looks like selling into slow down ,not the wise's decision or best timeing .

lloydstamps… I checked out the VSC links to the 2008 stamp issues, and I noticed that in May the links for first-class stamps say “42ą” rather than 41ą. Google has no information on a scheduled May 2008 rate increase, nor does the USPS website. What gives?

sarrinthegreat… If you scroll down the chatboard you will come to a big yellow box (posted on Dec-28-07 at 05:55:41 PST). By clicking the “New and Non-collectors” link you will discover how to evaluate your collection.

One quick way is to figure out how much was spent putting the collection together. The stamps should be worth about what was paid for them, adjusting for the passage of time, of course.

An appropriate message for today.....

Way back when in 1822, my distant relative C.C. Moore sat down and put quill pen to paper. His poem has become one of the most popular ever written.

Twas The Night Before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

iomoon congratulations to you, your wife and your daughter on her accompishment! Only 2 1/2 more years until our oldest starts college .....

afeht jaywild's original post (To all in the Antipodes
 To those who partake, or even those who don’t, I wish all a MERRY CHRISTMAS!! now, because when it hits your shores, some 5+ hours from now, I plan to be asleep.) was entirely correct, and completely understandable to those who have followed this board for any length of time. Those in Australia and New Zealand have periodically been referred to (on this board) as Antipodians. This is an entirely correct usage. The fact there is a broader, more general definition does not invalidate this specific usage. Also, although I have no proof, I am positive jaywild and smudger_the_ink are not the same person. jaywild has no need for an alternate personality - he openly states what he thinks under his own ID.

NOIP after almost 9 years of following this board (I've been following since well before I actually joined eBay in 1999), I'm seriously considering a New Year's resolution to stop following it. I believe I have an extremely thick skin, but the board of late has become less enjoyable to follow. This is NOT driven exclusively by a single poster, but rather the overall tenor of the board is confrontational and with a very, very low philatelic to non-philatelic ratio. I admit I hurt this ratio with this post, as it has nothing philatelic in it.

Just for fun, perhaps you can tell us why I would need an alter-ego for the sole purpose of twitting you. (Yes, alter ego is the term you want. “Avatar” sounds like you got it straight out of a thesaurus. Oops—oh, sorry.) You are so easy to provoke I can’t resist, and have had no qualms whatever in doing so under my regular ID.

Being unsure of oneself is no crime, in fact most people are insecure to one extent or another, but to try and disguise it the way you do with fake brainy talk and spluttering political effluvia is really just begging for ridicule.

Re: NYstamps:

Caveat emptor! With any dealer whose turnover is couple of million $$ per week one could expect lots that weren't thoroughly checked for quality. At the same time, one could expect lots that contain pleasant surprises, and that's what happened to me several times after buying from "NYstamps." I never buy mixed "worldwide" lots, of course, only country collections, only when I can see good scans of all stamps, and only after a careful consideration -- which should be a rule for any buyer who cares about his wallet.

David,

Yes, I gave a definition of the term that includes your definition without contradicting it but expands it to its correct boundaries. Insisting on the narrow, local meanings of the term is cultural prejudice.

I don't know what, exactly, makes you so stubborn on this particular subject but I can be stubborn, too. I won't let you off this one easy.

O.K. Then who am I? I only have minimal feedback so I must be who I'm not.

NY Stamps. I look at their offerings fom time to time and I all I see is common material. They are good for the general collector or accumulator who, with so many scans of the same stamps, get lulled into thinking they are getting much more than what is really there. That's, in part, how they manage to get good realizations.

Who am I? Who I am? That's a question for the ages!

David,

At least you should concede that your usage/definition is narrower than mine, and thus becomes a "subset," mathematically speaking.

Please remember, I didn't say that Jaywild's usage was incorrect, I gave the proper definition of the word.

Please remember also that it was Jaywild, not me, who incorrectly accused me of being in error. Jaywild seems to be uncommonly good at shooting himself in the foot; who am I to prevent him from expressing his only talent with full flourish?

Just trying to help...

NYstamps is one of my favourite eBay sellers. Sure, they inflate the values of some of the stamps they sell. But they are clueless about stamp varieties and postmarks -- basically they only know what is in Scott. Their collection lots can be goldmines.

About my problems with categories last night: They had switched me to the new "My eBay." Which doesn't work at all with Firefox. Made ALL of eBay virtually unusable for me. There's a link at the bottom of the page to switch back to the old version.

A while ago, infla-alec admonished me for mentioning my active auction lot on this board, saying that that I cannot mention it on this board until bidding is closed.

"Advertising" of one's lots on chat boards is against the rules but nothing prevents an eBayer from discussing here any material he/she is offering on eBay if such a discussion is not a solicitation with an intent to attract buyers.

Therefore, mentioning your own lot to make a point in a philatelic discussion is not against the rules.

Alex,

that was from Encarta.

The term Antipodes is the normal description in the UK & Australia and presumably to some Americans to describe Australia & New Zealand. What it's exact definition has no bearing. Just because it not in your usage does not make it incorrect,

dbenson,

What appears to be "normal usage" in the UK doesn't make a definition. Being a Siberian, I don't need a computer encyclopedia to know that Patagonians are antipodes of Siberians.

I remember my father explaining me this word when I was six years old, reading Jules Verne's "Les Enfants du capitaine Grant." In this most excellent book, Verne uses the word "antipodes" to describe the inhabitants of Patagonia.

Alex,

or to us, (from Encarta)

Antipodes
plural noun
Definition:

Australia and New Zealand: Australia and New Zealand, from the perspective of the United Kingdom or Europe (informal)

It is normal usage to describe Australia & New Zealand,

To a computer it might have a different meaning but humans aren't computers,

Burt, Norfolk Island is part of Australia

Definition of antipodes: see here>

For a Californian, "antipodes" would be people living somewhere in the Indian ocean, a bit south-east of Madagascar.

For a Siberian, "antipodes" are inhabitants of Chile and Patagonia. New Zealanders are "antipodes" of Spaniards.

For a Californian postal clerk feeling threatened by the existence of a single Russian American who never took a penny in uncle Sam's benefits, "ideological antipode" is somebody like me.

All the same, i wish everybody (including even Jaywild) Merry Christmas!

19thcentpostal, I think there's a chance it's a 10, but there's not enough detail to plate it. The color in the scan is wrong, but that doesn't worry me so much (it's a tough shade to scan, so most 10's don't look like 10's...) The reason I give it a chance is because of the very fine impression (a characteristic of virtually every 10.) I can see a lot of detail around the toga button & in the neck, some of the first places I look. Does the seller offer extensions?

I would think that what are the antipodes would depend upon where one was currently.

I had to check to make sure, but there is a group of islands know as the Antipodes Islands.

 Christmas spirit notwithstanding, NY Stamps is and remains one of the most troublesome sellers on eBay. I don’t think you have anything to apologize for. I personally have been called upon many times to verify that they are misrepresenting classic US stamps as being valuable types when they are not. Either they are scam artists or else astoundingly uninformed of even the most basic knowledge of early US material. They have a well deserved nasty reputation amongst the vigilantes who try and keep eBay Stamps a safe place to trade.

Sadly, anyone who sincerely believes NY Stamps sells good material fairly priced has no doubt been duped by them many times over and didn't know it.

Apparently it is a UK thing.

In the UK, Australia and New Zealand are called the Antipodes.

According to Oxford dictionary.

Antipodes
 The term does not refer to those living in the Southern Hemisphere—only the seriously misinformed would think that the Bushmen of the Kalahari, the shepherds of the Falkland Islands, or the residents of Buenos Aires could be described as living in the Antipodes. The trouble with having only a little bit of knowledge is that it is not enough to make one appear learned, while being plenty enough to cause one to trip frequently over his own tongue.

â˜ș

Also, a feverish thumbing through the encyclopedia does not a geographer make—the assertion that Christmas Day begins in Magadan Siberia, one hour ahead of Sydney, is very curious, since Auckland New Zealand is two hours ahead of Sydney. Thus the poor Siberians will have another hour of sitting on their hands while the Midnight Masses in Christchurch are already well underway. And the Christmas Islands (Kiritimati) are even another hour ahead, leaving our poor Siberians even further in the dark.

My heartfelt advice—close the gazetteer but leave the dictionary open. Apparently two reference books is one too many to handle at one time!

â˜ș

Oh, and a Merry Christmas to all those in the American Rockies, where Christmas is (generally) some 14 or so hours away

afeth, do not worry, in most of the emirates, drinking is perfectly legally and all sots of Alcohol can be bought at licensed shops as ling you are in the possession of a valid liquor license. Well, just yesterday i piled up my stocks.., unfortunately my licence had expired a few weeks ago but it was still accepted. Since the Russians have invaded the Emirates, in Dubai you can find more empty Vodka bottles in the beach then water bottles.

dbenson,

Sydney it is! ;)

Russians celebrate Christmas twice: by the new calendar, and by the traditional, old style Church calendar (two weeks later). New Year's Eve and first two days of New Year are also a pretext for abundant drinking. Thus, I strongly recommend NOT to do any serious business in Russia from December 24th until approximately January 15th, when hangover finally starts to dissipate.

about 10 days, that's all the time my wife could take off from the various Xmas parties and from the start of my daughters school holidays. She is going on a school trip to Vanuatu in January.

We treated ourselves to a 50" panasonic and are very happy with it. It has the nice matt frame all others have the reflective polished frame, which bounce back the glare etc.

Your stay in Queensland was short!

greenwave,

the tradition of Boxing Day sales started about the same time as Boxing Day, my wife and daughter are talking about a new TV and measuring where it will go. My letter box was full of pamphlets and they are wading through them now,

I guess i was a bit harsh on your mate nystamps; maybe he has hardened to the fact he can misdescribe and be allowed to keep getting away with it from people who feel it better to not complain.

I apologise to any board members who may have taken my words below as offensive.

My wife read the below earlier and i got a bollocking for being an old grump this time of the year, so to all board members and viewers my best compliments of the season to yourself and your family.

afeth, 24th December is usually also a working day in Europe.., however, since tomorrow and after tomorrow are holidays, most of the companies are closed already.
In Germany i.e., the presents are given at Christmas eve.., while in UK they are given on 25th.in the morning..., so every country has its own customs...

knuden,

I am sorry, but isn't your announcement a bit premature? Now it's morning of December 24st, a Christmas Eve day, in Denmark (which is a working day in the US, I don't know about Denmark). Last time I checked, Christmas Day was December 25th.

Being an antipode (that is, living in the Southern Hemisphere) has nothing to do with time zones: time in Chile is the same as on the Atlantic shore of Canada.

Christmas Day begins in Magadan, a very cold and very Northern place on the shore of Chukotka peninsula in Eastern Siberia, 1 hour before the clock strikes midnight in Sidney.
