I need to add the my below statement is of course only correct if the stamps are examined as per the German Stamp examiners association (BPP) conditions...
Posted by 22028   ( 1658 ) on Oct-07-07 at 22:12:06 PDT   Listings
mini*lindy, the position of the certifiers handstamps does not denotes Good or Bad but the basic condition of the stamp like perforated, imperforated etc..., however, the location from bottom of the stamp seen, indicates the overall condition very good to bad..., as higher the certifiers handstamps seen from the bottom of the back of the stamp as poorer the condition.

peetah I'm working from memory here (and its going fast!), as I no longer have access to the large philatelic reference libraries as I once did. I think it was in the Michel Catalogues, (not sure), but yes.. the positioning of the certifiers handstamps denotes Good or Bad, but without that old reference I used to have, sorry, can't tell you which was which. Maybe another reader here has an old reference book with them in.

Thanks, vonbag The first 2 links did not work. I read the third, and agree "Thier" is on the back.
Other than it having been examined by Thier, how does that speak to the stamp being authentic or not? Are such marks placed there to signify they are genuine or forgeries? If they merely signify the stamp has been examined, then signing the backs are a waste of time.

Roger,
One is here, described as "Scott 56a. Blue on large piece.... [...]" a use in May 1871...
in retrospect, this one looks like a light ultramarine blue (from the colour link Ultramarines).

Then, there were the 'Supermarines', but those mostly spitted fire ;-)

The date/usage of this one here (single off cover, used, on eBay.de) would correspond, but the tone looks but a little lighter than the one of yours on cover (with 'Après le depart' of 1868).
To add a tiny spit to confusion, it is described in the title as "lebhaftblau" (bright blue) and in the description as "reinblau" (hell)" (nothing-to-do with reindeer or with rien ne va plus of the casinò, but with pure (?) blue (light) -- Hallo!). LOL

Roger,
Thank you very much for solving my doubts!!!
(you had to take out those covers and scan them again, among else -- I will peruse your other links, too! I already saved your image with your explanation).
I have often seen on eBay (at least a couple of auctions are still up) 30rp blue on cover with cancels of 1868 on (one also with a cancel of 1870), therefore I was totally confused!

Thanks again & all the best!

Paolo -
30 cent shades. The middle under cover is certified Blue. the others are normal shades. The true blue came out in September 1867 so needs a cancel during September -November, not sure how much further uses.

I would never call any of the "blues" Prussian Blue. There are dull ultramarines, ultramarines, and deep ultramarines.
Ultramarines
Blues

This seems to be a very useful pigment color guide. We really aren't interested in other guides.

If I screwed up the links, everyone shoul dbe able to figurre out the color guides.

Matt (paperhistory),
I, too, find your phonography advertising cover very interesting.
Before you posted that cover, I didn't know an H about phonography and phonotypy in that guise.
Well, I aw that type of writing in the dictionaries I use, but with remarkable differences.
Among else, I find 'wurdz' for words quite intriguing!
Reminds me the Texan pronunciation of that word in American-English.
Paolo

Roger,
The three found are from the P.O. of Payerne.
The one on your cover (also here) is obviously from Lausanne.
That makes it special, I think.
Besides, aren't both 30c. adhesives 'blue' instead of ultramarine?
As you know, this would make it even more desirable, with a catalogue value of above 500 CHF each for single on cover.
Although I still make a little confusion, I would dare to think that the cataloguists have it not very clear themselves: I don't know why, for instance, in Michel this scarcer shade of the 30rp of 1867 is called 'preussich blau' (prussian blue)...
This is just one of the hundreds of discrepancies and just in colour classification. I find the Michel special colour nomenclature out of line (or out of reality, what I see on stamps) in a few cases.

Rainer,

I'm almost sure that cancel reads:

Administración de correos / SUCURSAL / Montevideo

I'm not totally sure about the exact words in the first phrase, but 100% sure it's from Montevideo. It's the standard cancel in these stamps, so if you look for other ones I'm sure you'll find a clear example.

Good day all from Sunday Shoes!

In a moment, I have to go off to the father of my wife for the day. He lives in a beautiful old house in Amersfoort, which until about 1850 was used as a prison [there's lot of chime in the house, for who has the guts and ears to listen ;-); I normally like to stay by myself at the upper floor, under the roof, for some hours when I go there; up there there is some kind of a spot where you can listen what is said on the lower floors]. Was built in the early 16th century on the older city walls. Few modifications were made since then and it's a national monument (even though it's private property).

Won this little beauty, the 10rp stamp of this series graphically speaking is my favorite of all Pro Juventute emissions.

Roger,
"Dieser stempel wird im Berner Postmuseum aufbewahrt und ist bis anhin "gebraucht" nicht nachgewiesen."

(~)= "This postmark was kept in the Bern Postal Museum and since then is not known as used"

word "Anhin": not found.

"Laut Fussnote Seite 91 war dieser Stempel "Apre le depart" damals nur aus dem Postmuseum in Bern bekannt. Seither ist er 3mal postalisch gebraucht vorgelegen, sodass nun wenigstens 3 Stuck bekannt sind, namlich von Payerne."

(~)= According to the footnote at page 91 this Postmark "APRÈS LE DEPART" in those times was only known in the Bern Postal Museum. Since then, it was found 3 times postally used, so that only 3 pieces are known, namely from Payerne.

Wonder if Cuba is a scarce destination from Switzerland.

Paolo

In NCAA football, LSU held on to the #1 spot, coming back to beat Florida. The game was in question as Florida had led for most of the game.
The game that turned out to be the real shocker was the team from Stanford defeating #2 USC in perhaps the 2nd biggest upset of the year. Michigan losing to Appalachian State still has to be considered a bigger surprise.

Two very good games to watch, I'm glad I saw those.

Good job to the new coach for Stanford, the "kid" (Jim Harbaugh) really pulled it off!! (I say kid because he's younger than I am. That trend is increasing too much!)

NCAA Football. It's very entertaining.

I wish I could see the Rugby, it's on channel 615 on my dish, and that's $15/month. There are times I wish I could pay per view that channel for certain events.

Sorry for the sports post. But that USC loss is great news for the California Bears, LSU Tigers, and even the long-shot Boston College Eagles have to like that one.

happy purchase of the day from club show today. This is a nice 1850s "phonography" ad cover -- not bad in and of itself, but the killer is that the postmaster (who apparently was the sender) wrote his postmark, the rate, and even the name of the addressee in Phonotypy (as described on the ad cover itself!). I've never seen anything quite like it. (There is no Cilburn, OH. It's Kilbourne).

... re-presents,
I bought for myself this small present
(thanks to tinypic.com for hosting my images)

All the stamps but the 10c. red (it's a type I), are damaged. I thought they were sound from the description LOL (not).
However, the 10 c. bears a (strangely ?) smudged, apparently overinked, St. Croix cancel dated "19.11.15 - 4" within the rectangular date bridge.

The 10Fr. green on the extreme left is shown as it was before (on the top row) and how it is now. Fear not, I have marked it "repaired" with indelible black ink on reverse. I still have to work on it, though. Sometimes I like to waste my time with painting, especially on things that were presents ;-) (of the serie "almost wondrous transformations").

Lil (lillianna),
You deserve an answer to your questions of last evening.
The Normandie cover is an event cover. I cannot tell you to which group of collectors (maritime or philately) it would be of greatest interest. I would list it in both categories. I would mention the slogan roller cancel which is interesting and, of course, the whole basis for the card's interest. It is not a great rarity but is worth more than the ordinary first day of issue cover - maybe $1 to $5 (on a good day).
The postcard franked with the 1Âą parcel post stamp of 1913 would be of interest to collectors specializing in such covers. It was an acceptable usage of the parcel post stamps although they were not intended for use on ordinary mail. Certainly the usage is important. Again, such items are not uncommon. Should bring one or two dollars (although I haven't been following these items).

Hi again, This is "onepup" under my usual ID rather than the one my DH normally bids under.

I did find 2 examples last night where someone actually bought one of those "coin stamps" here on Ebay. one sold and feedback for one

I certainly can't retire on the profits but if someone might want it I may as well list for 99cents rather than toss it. I also see where the very same example (like same seller) Matt showed is listed here in an Ebay store at the same price. And no it hasn't sold yet. As I said I'll just include the mineral stamps along with a gemstone book. I bought a box of 20 to 30 lapidary/gem books at a yardsale yesterday. Doesn't appear there is anything too exciting in the lot but for $2 I figured I may as well group them together and list them.

Actually there is one neat book in the box. An old Peacock company catalog from 1920. All sorts of neat stuff in it. Like pocket watches, jewelry, a few clocks and so on. Fun to look at. That one's probably a keeper.

Again, thanks for your help here. I'm normally an Antique's board person.

Rainer Can't remember having tasted those brews but I shall take your word for it. I wonder how many different beers there are in the world? I would imagine possibly 10s of thousands? I suppose I have only had a couple hundred different. The favorite around here (by beer lovers) is Boulevard Wheat made in Kansas City. I rather doubt any current readers of the board have ever had it, wish I could send you a bottle.

Matt I wonder how long that guy has had that "stamp" for sale? I have several around here somewhere. They turn up in box lots every so often. Just goes to show you can ask what ever you want for something.
Possibly somebody somewhere will bite on that one. I would not want onepup to be mislead on that offering.

subotaj2 Well the answer is NO, but I think you just did.
Note: massive does not equal 1000 stamps here. However massive 1000 stamp lot usually means JUNK.

Onepup Old American Insurance Co. did not issue postage stamps.
Value= zip
The block of 4 gemstone stamps was issued by the U.S. in 1974. Todays value would be face, i.e. 40 cents. I bought a lot of those back then and still have a few left I use on packages when shipping gemstones that I cut.

Well I answered my second question by searching with better terms this time. 1974 and no they aren't worth listing. ;)
Might as well throw them in with one of the gemstone cutting books.

I'll check back later to see if anyone knows what the "coin stamp" is.

good evening! I sell books on eBay, and usually post on the bookboard...where there are some knowledgeable stamp folks checking in from time to time...They have made me as aware of cancels as of stamps! I have two questions:
I have a postcard (French chateau, nothing remarkable) that was written aboard the SS Normandie, and has the "Voyage Inaugural" cancel on 29 March 1935. I am wondering if this would be more of interest to ocean liner enthusiasts...or if the special cancel makes it of greater interest to philatelists? Click Here

The second question concerns a 1913 postcard which is just noticed has a one cent Parcel Post stamp, instead of the more common 1 cent stamps I see on postcards. Is that unusual? Something to note in the auction?
thanks! lil

Apart from the eBay resilient and recalcitrant stamp related Scum Bags,
Something to report to this board extemporaneously:
I met a nurse who knows the guy who spoiled my life (by calling the police, etc.).

This evening I danced and talked with her, a very nice girl. 24 years old, I am, 42.
Beautiful smell of young flesh, disrupting girl, she looks like Marlene Dietrich (I will not tell you here more, I could eat her).

Some guys recognized me (!!!) , from the internet, and offered me some drinks!

all the best,

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the kind words. LOL on the "lets start it at $1,000.00".

I will have to take my time, I tried to find an appraiser in my area and most were not interested as they would have to travel about an hour to view the collection. It is stored in 4 banker boxes, there are a few albums, stock books....a little of everything I read in the yellow box about how stamps are collected.

It doesn't have to be overwhelming.
Just take your time and dont look for a quick return.
Buyers will almost always pay more from sellers who appear to know what they are doing.
Rather than the " I bought this in a garage sale and know nothing about stamps" lets start it at $1,000.

Peter

After careful consideration, I decided that the 75c stamp was indeed portraying Longonot.

I'm still not sure on the 250c stamp displaying Mt. Kenya since it is a long way from the railway line.

Hi All,

This is my first time posting on this board, your yellow box is very informative. I am going to be selling a stamp collection from an estate and I wonder if anybody would like to offer up any suggestions that might help. The proceeds will be going to a non-for-profit. I will continue to read the yellow box, it is a little overwhelming for a non stamp collector.

Paolo -
I was going to comment on all the stock books you have bought, then realized I have my razor cards and letters in 3 ring binders - 8 x 2 inch, and 5 x 1 inch. That's over 21 inches of shelf space for razor cancel material. Who'd have thought it 5 years ago? I have about 10 inches of Sitting Helvetia binders.

Here are a couple of covers I bought last year and after taking the lower to Portland to obtain identification help (not successful), I looked this week in my Andres and Emmeneger of 1931 origin. Found it with the following note in German -
"Dieser stempel wird im Berner Postmuseum aufbewahrt und ist bis anhin "gebraucht" nicht nachgewiesen."
In the 1954 udate is written:
"Laut Fussnote Seite 91 war dieser Stempel "Apre le depart" damals nur aus dem Postmuseum in Bern bekannt. Seither ist er 3mal postalisch gebraucht vorgelegen, sodass nun wenigstens 3 Stuck bekannt sind, namlich von Payerne."

The online translations leave out important words, so if anyone can give me a true colloquial translation I'd appreciate it. I do get the gist of only known in postal museum, then updated that 3 known on stamps. Is that correct?

The 1969 loose-leaf edition values the marking at 70SF = 325 today.

Thanks in advance fo the help.

Roger
PS: Concerning errant razor. Give time. Seller occassionally posts here and may see gentle note. )'>) To everyone else, I not writing about Ruby, whose ads populate just about every search return page. I wonder how much they pay eBay for all their advertising. Obviously they are immune to sanctions!

Bjorn,
Perfectly at the point, and thank you for taking your time to analyze the matter.
The Problem is that the one lot that was lost, was heavy enough so to influence the S&H charge for the two lots.
cash Look at their INCREMENTAL S&H charges on their pages, and you will understand which is my point.

I want satisfaction, absolutely not because I am needy of money, but to prevent others to be circumvented in a similar manner with Rubystamps' singular shipping methods.
They can be read on any of their pages. The shipping cost depends on the weight.
I conserve the envelope (cover) that contained the last lot they shipped to me, which should have contained TWO lots on album pages. I will scan it and show it for public "ludibrium" (low franking) in a moment.

Paolo, about your dispute with Ruby: it looks from the second email you quoted that you may have bought more than one item, and only one wasn't shipped? If that's the case, than I must say I actually agree with Ruby that you shouldn't get the postage refunded if you had to pay that anyway for items that were shipped.

Thanks, Paolo. This year I've been trying to clean up a house full of way too many newly purchased large collections (mostly bought last year), and they were filling every room but bath & kitchen. PS Roger,
I think I might have some other razor cancels on postage due (or other stamps).
I still have to organize better that large accumulation I swapped for Vatican City, San Marino etc.. I am so happy to have 'lost' them ;-)
Due to the enormous amount of lose stamps, although it is very unusual for me, I still have to examine more seriously the content of several envelopes. The problem is that it takes a lot of time and my ignorance on the field is a factor.
But for my life I hope I will accomplish the mission. I have bought 10 stockbooks with 64 pages each and a lot of 'hagner type' pages (my favorite) for the purpose of organization.

Speaking of cancels, I once saw about 1/2 a Hong Kong stamp go for $400, due to the extremely scarce cancel.

I got my unlisted Lagos Inv. wmk. listed in Gibbons BC 2008 (it's #24w), starting at 200 pds, as no one knows whether any others may come forward yet.

Some of the newer Gibbons Specs are really nice - I just got in Central America, and it's a beaut (too bad the very weak USD makes them so expensive here in US - but still worth the cost). Also Middle East, and France & Cols SG are of the same superb quality - Large Format cats (about 12x8 inches per page), and much detail as well as color. Excellent cats, these newer ones are.

Geneve Ru Du Stand Razor is on your postage due. Nice find. I have only seen this cancal once here -
http://www.ilhawaii.net/~rheath/razorexhibit2007/6_page14.html
- and now twice on a postage due.
My other razor on a postage due is this block used for internal accounting between departments:
http://www.ilhawaii.net/~rheath/razorexhibit2007/7_page14.html
The only other postage due I’ve seen canceled with a razor is an item from Chur in 1918-19 period. It was published in a series of Swiss razor articles.

BTW - Never mind short perfs when collecting cancels, that criteria is for stamp collectors, marcophilatelists are interested in the perfect cancel no matter wher it is used!

Today I discovered I have a very rare cancel on a Sitting Helvetia cover. I’ll scan it tomorrow with the citation.

Watch this board – as the stamps were not as described I am sure someone will soon post a message on how to complain to eBay. As to the postage – if he did not say there was reduced postage for multiple lots then he is doing what he said in charging full postage for every lot. I hope someone more knowledgeable than me will be able to say if eBay would consider the high postage evasion of eBay fees which I think is also a cause to complain to eBay. And if you paid by Paypal or credit card, as the goods were not as described you might be able to get a refund from one or another of those.

Colin, just trying to be helpful.

I want to alert all stamp buyers about a real bogus seller on Ebay. The company is Berryville Cards located in Berryville, Arkansas. This seller shows a stamp collection that he says was donated and he is selling it in lots of 100 stamps. The photos of this collection are very enticing. There are photos of high-end American classic issues that are valuable. He starts the bidding at $.98 a lot. He charges $5.95 a lot for shipping. He says on his site that he takes time in choosing the stamps to avoid duplicates. I recently purchased 22 lots that totaled $80.66. He charged me $117.75 for shipping.

He mailed about 2000 stamps in two bubble-pak envelopes. He stuffed the stamps so that many of them were bent and creased. The stamps sent in no way resembled what was shown on his site. They were all cheap foreign worthless ones. About 60-70% were duplicates. He does not answer emails and according to a phone company recording, he is not taking calls at this time. PLEASE BE AWARE OF THIS SELLER AND DON'T GET TAKEN LIKE ME!

Happens to me will all to much frequency when they material received did not quite measure up to what was expected. I agree that it’s not in order.

David B.,
Although I must confess my point of view is corrupted by being a directly interested part, I think your explanation regarding their mistakes is a tad bit too benign in this case.

I am not sure about the IQ part either, as they try to do their business with profit, e.g. "conveniently" neglecting to give me the refund for the S&H cost...

For something different, I never had a similar problem with you, always very nice items and timely received (that is also important ;-)) so, your addition "(mine)" in my modest opinion is an understatement of your seller's diligence.

Brian,
Nice to see you posting! I hope all is fine with you and with CSA collecting!

Roger & Paolo,

there must have a major problem with their " system " of they lose a lot of material. Speaking from experience where sometime a lot can't be found it is usually human error that caused it (mine) but a diligent search has always tracked down where it is. It has always been after the item was sold and has been placed in with another buyers material but the shipping department has noticed the mistake and corrected it. I presume their shipping department has a similar IQ as their lotting department which explains the problem.

Roger,
Thank you for your words of encouragement, my friend!
Must be good luck (or good winds, those that are uncorrupted by rotten pharts ;-) I just found this postage due here:
Geneve Razor type II (should be a type II, please correct me if not so). This one is almost sound, as opposed to the one with St. Croix of 1899, if not for that shorter perforation on the left hand side, third from top
(Many thanks to Tinypic.com for hosting my images!)

Re. the sc*m stone:
I will simply not bid again on any of their lots and, when I spot a misdescribed item, like I have encountered so many in the last weeks, I will report it to eBay.
My Machiavellic fine ultimo has become to see them behind bars, not only expelled from eBay.

Paolo (will add something tomorrow on your wonderful items, as promised... now I am too P***** off to cogitate rationally)

Aloha Paul -
I hope you don't mind my sending items via eBay email system, I prefer that method rather than posting here where the Whole World" takes a look, including those in the balcony!

Paolo -
You go guy! I'm still P***** off at the item Ruby couldn't find that I bought! It is difficult for me to view their auctions, because they are mostly overpriced (there are a few exceptions), and they have a tendency to "lose" items prior to shipping. I personally believe they use a hidden reserve system without paying eBay fees for a reserve auction! If they lose as many items as have been reported over time, someone has light fingers within the organization! Couldn't be a describer since they don't have a clue. LOL

a few weeks ago I received this from my Chinese friend here in Holland:

"Dear Paulo,

"Dear Paulo,

The first two years is hard working. After that she got so many people below her, who's doing her work. Katxxx just travel now to give her lecture, also in Hongkong,Bangkok and in Singapore.

Apart for the horrible grammar errors,

Absolutely agree with you as to removing images from auctions.
A few years ago it may have been necessary in order to put up new auctions.
However, today most hosts offer gigabytes of storage space for a small fee.
I now carry around a 2G memory stick attached to my neck.
My catalog with over 6,000 images only runs to about 80M.

Hi paradisepeabody,
you wrote in two subsequent posts:
"Do people normally remove pictures after you have purchased an item?"
"before you receive the item? "

No, that is absolutely not in order.
Like others said, only when the transaction is completed, seller received payment and buyer received item, it can be done to save web-space.

Roger,
Wonderful pieces, if you allow me!!!
I particularly like the first one.
But I will try to reply in the detail later,
because now it's almost sniping time (and it will a fight as Michelle is almost going to return home)
Today I received this Swiss 1Rp postage due.
I knew there was something strange with it, as I don't have that plate fault on the numeral "1" in dark verimllion.
One of the reasons why I didn't have this position in the sheet is because it has the olive green frame of the I type (catalogues around 300.00 Euro).

Aloha -
Paolo - Keep up the good work just like everyone is writing. I'll chime in occasionally when I have something to write. LOL (See below)
Looks like either GĂŒller & Cie were keeping very busy, or there was a lot of copying going on. Those Italian cancels look identical to this Finnish cancel I received this week. The measurements are the same 30mm outside circle - 19mm inside circle. That is pretty conclusive to me. For those who don't know, the razor cancelers were different diameters indicating deCoppet was probably trying to determine the best size. If Guller was selling cancelers to other countries and had a pattern book for them to choose from, then they would always be the same dimensions! As frederic would have said, "Voila!"

To keep on topic (Switzerland), these are the 4 parcel cards I received this week. They were not the rare varieties, but still I believe a worthwhile purchase. They are actually quite interesting combinations of stamps. (Large Scan)

Top card - I knew this had to be the first Type 1 Sitting Helvetia, ZU 107 (Sc 136a), since the second printing wasn’t distributed until Jan 1909. The only other 40 centimes that could have been used was a 97A (SC122) Standing Helvetia. Thus the use of the 40 Sitting, and the 30 Standing Helvetia is a correct and timely mixed franking, which should be interesting at auction. Cat alone for the Sitting Helvetia in combination with any other stamp is SF375. As a mixed with the Standing I have no idea, that’s what auctions are for.

Second card - Zu 96A (Sc121), strip of three 98A (123) and 106. Nice mixed franking during this transitional period. Cat values (not considering mixed franking) - SF 230

Third Card - Pair ZU 91C (110a) and 103. Again a nice mixed franking since I believe the Numeral stamps were still available. Cat for single 91C stamp with other stamp SF40). Don’t know premium for pair on cover. No price given!

Fourth Card - To me the prettiest, but may not end up the most valuable. ZU 99A (124), 98A (123), 96A (121), 103, 104. I haven’t a clue of the value except to add up the cat values for each stamp which come to about SF400. A fourth mixed franking.

To those who are following tis post, the high value Standing Helvetia had been in use since 1882, and in 1908/early 1909 they were replaced by the Sitting Helvetia. The low value Numerals had also been issued in 1882 and were replaced by the Tell Child and by the Helvetia Bust in early 1908. The examples on these cards were all available but soon replaced in the process of being replaced themselves during December 1908 and January 1909 as the design was considered weak.

These cards are great examples of the transition period when these combinations were available. None are out of period, they are just perfect examples of mixed franking from late 1908.

As a final point of interest, it seems these parcel tags were attached to packages of currency. The declared value rages from SFR500-700 and seem to have weighed between 6.5 Kilos and up. I’ll need a exert to determine how the rates were calculated.

There will be a test on Friday!

Roger

Yep, I saw that and was quite stunned to see a 6:30 pm September 6, 1901 Buffalo Fair cancel on that cover. The seller only listed it as a “1901 Fair cancel”.

There’s a letter that comes with the cover. It is likely that there is no mention of the shooting in the letter. It was almost certainly mailed before the shooting, which took place a little after 4:00 pm. Still, an interesting find. I was willing to pay more than I did.

Roger.
This evening I scan those covers.
Then, that stamp I linked some days ago, this one, is well on chalky paper of course but - alas - also grilled (gum/paper).
It would have been too much of a 'bargain' were it on just chalky paper of 1940. ;-)
To me it looks like that the 1.50 frank on chalky paper only bears a slightly more bluish underprint than those of '1933', on which the underprint on background has a slight hint of green in it. The period of usage corresponded, if I correctly recall the rare in used condition only chalcky paper (gestrischenes auch gekreidt papier) started to be distributed on 30 november 1940 (cancel on stamp is December 1940).
Too bad, also, that the seller neglected to add one of the lots I won in the envelope (I already have notified of this fact by e-mail, no reply as of today) addressed to me.

If I were to try to remove self stick stamps from paper, I would start with "like dissolves like" thinking and try a bath in "Goo-Gone" or that fluid in an ultrasonic bath.
Posted by soggy333   ( 56 ) on Oct-03-07 at 06:34:54 PDT   Listings
Mitch
Why don't you try that ultrasonic bath on some cheap stamps? I remember cleaning pen nibs with one of those. It is more violent than it looks. My guess is that it will take all of the sizing out of the paper and disintegrate the stamp if left in too long. The solvent used can be water or just about anything. The physical agitation accelerates the action of any solvent used.

...with naphtha alone it works as well for me (just tried), the sticky stuff slowly enters in the solution. however, by doing so, one goes to waste a little glass of this relatively expensive fluid for inexpensive stamps.
Sometimes, the golden colour of the stamps partly enters in the solution as well, so not only naphtha was wasted but also the stamp itself.

Good day/evening/night all from "the day after" Shoes!

Aloha Roger,
I hope you will recover soon!
Unfortunately, Swiss fever is incurable ;-)
I also notice the striking similarity of that Helsinki cancel with those of St. Croix and Vevey you linked.
Looks like the maker is the same...or it is a matter of industrial espionage ;-)

Hi Sheryll! Will have time to wish you a great trip & vacation to Mexico!

Hogiej,
As far as I have experienced, with the stamps Dragonstamps mentioned, those self-adhesive Italian Priority stamps, there is not much to do to separate them from the paper by means of soaking them in a watery solution. I believe there is only the self-adhesive stuff on reverse, in direct contact with the back of the stamp, whereas I noticed that in other self-adhesive stamps there is an additional thin layer of water soluble material in-between, likely vinyl gum, that allows the stamp to come off the paper when wet and the sticky material remains stuck on the paper of the fragment.
The solution to separate them is not to soak in water, but in turpentine and then wash off the residual grease with naphtha: but it stinks a lot and it's obviously dangerous.
I mostly leave them where they are: on the paper.

I have used ultrasonics for nearly 40 years in the cleaning of jewelry but have only recently thought that it might be a very constructive tool regrarding stamps.

P.S. however, on the past August 2006 (more than one year and a month ago) I sent a banknote of 50 euro (via registered mail -- that adds about 4 euro) to a seller in Italy (in Tuscany) as payment for one single used stamp of the Gran Duchy of Tuscany (I can recognise it in the thousands).
He gave me positive feedback upon receipt of my payment, but I never received his registered sending.
That sums it up approximately well: Lost money.

Good day all!

Not a sparkle of new from Brazil, but the Paypal weapon is strong, and I rely on it, keeping it as an ultimate resource.
For that matter, I still have to hear about a couple of relatively expensive items I paid for.

I would have to say more, my just 9 months old relationship with the Swiss stamps has generated lots of entertainment and sorrow as well, for items not received (- NEVER experienced before, without a refund -). However, the joy of collecting Switzerland largely outweighs the negative aspects of a few negative transactions experienced.
Not the case to construe a 'conspiracy' or 'Swiss connection', I presume.

Good continuation,

Ken - you have an offset, not a printed on both sides. The image (lettering) on back of stamp is reversed. If it was not reversed it would be a printed on both sides.

To all the gang on 42nd St (or wherever):

What constitutes a "reverse" transfer?

I found
this by accident. The stamp is a common 2 cent Green from 1887.

My catalog shows a variety printed on both sides, with no estimate of value. This image is the reverse of the front.

Thanks for your help. Ken C.

You can also make a humidity box using a soaked sponge inside of a small container with the stubborn stamp. Maybe the high humidity will separate them, though I've never really tried that method. I've only heard of it.

That Italian stamp, if it's the same one that I've never been able to separate .... (gold priority stamp? scott 2393)
Good luck. I think that might be the toughest stamp ever.
U.S.A. stamps are easy to soak by comparison.
Increasing the water temperature works for me, I sort the ones I know will be tough for a hotter soak. (self adhesives)
Very hot water can work on even tougher stamps, but you can ruin the stamp. So be forewarned. It takes practice. And don't burn yourself! Don't try it on that Italian stamp, that doesn't work on that one, the stamp disintegrates first.

I think leaving some of those on paper is the only way to go.

Wow, never in my life have I seen the Canadian dollar worth so much. It’s all a very good thing for the US, despite the Treasury Department ninnies who bemoan the falling dollar—when the dollar is cheap compared to other world currencies, US goods are also cheaper, so sales boom.

Anybody know what country is America’s largest—by far—trading partner? It’s Canada.

Also, nice to see postings from Sheryll and trianglemarten. So where’s Anne and Jeff S? Don’t make me come looking for you two

Io - Thank you for linking to those great photos of Baitoushan. Truly an impressive crater lake! I have never seen fog at Crater Lake, but there has been snow around the rim most of the times I have seen it.

Roger - Wishing you a belated happy birthday for Saturday. Glad you enjoyed your trip to Maui.
In the last week, I saw two "ALOHA" licence plates. One from Oregon (Crater Lake style), and one from Hawaii. Both owners probably reside in the town of Aloha (pronounced "Aloa") just up the road from here.

Paolo - Thanks for the greetings. All is well here. I'm preparing for a 3-week trip to Mexico City later this month.

Maaarten - Great to hear from you, and I'm pleased to hear that all is well and you are keeping busy. Don't be a stranger here!

Hmmm. Torn, creased, all four stamps affected by some sort of unnatural discoloration. I won't even get into the "cancelation", which doesn't have a snowballs chance in the Sahara of passing any known certification service, perfectly defacing each stamp down into the near worthless classification level.

Yours for only $3,500!!

Wait, I see a "or best offer" button. I'll offer as my bid 35 cents (Canadian).

While you can't count on continued returns, a DJIA index fund is outperforming the 5.40% CDs.

P.S.:
Roger, I looked amongst my Swiss postage dues, but for the moment (they are many) only found the "brieftrÀgers" ("porta lettere") etc. with fleurons and thin shading.
I only found this one (with 7 bars in circular segments and no fleurons),
but it appears it is from Bern and of 1911 (sorry for the rather mesmerising grass green backg.d LOL); the 100rp stamp belongs to the printings of 1903-1905, with KZII (KZ1y) and RIIN in "medium olive green".

Knud-Erik,
Other two very nice re-directions!
I will look (and keep an eye out) for a pneumatic usage of an "Italia al Lavoro" stamp on cover or card.
I do not think I have it here, maybe I have a loose stamp with a pneumatic post cancel...

Maarten,
Nice to see you posting. Glad to have read all is fine with you and yours!

Roger,
Congrats on your "ZÜRICH 1/ BRIEFTRÄGER III"!
Related to the Guller July 1903 test cancels of Switzerland, before the fleurons were added on the sides and the shading in the circular segments was made thinner, similar types were used in Italy from 1890 on (until about the 1920's and even later with small modifications, also for telegraphic and postal money order usages). They were initially furnished to TPO Clerks ("messaggeri / messaggerie postali").
I have around at least two on cover. I bought it from a friend of mine who is specialized on TPO / "ambulanti postali". I will scan it ASAP!
I read of similar types used later, still on Italian area, being known only as receiving/forwarding postmarks; they are often found as cancellers of postage due adhesives in the first years of 1900.

Good continuation,
Paolo

Aloha Paolo and Knud-Erik -

I can’t add more than Paolo wrote concerning the due covers below. Here is a cover I’ve yet to receive with a due. I bought it for the Zurich cancel, which is an example of the Guller July 1903 test cancels. There is apparently a group of 13 cancels that were made prior to the official acceptance of the Fleuron cancelers distributed in December 1903. I’m tracking down which towns used this set.

Based on only a couple of examples, I believe Guller made these two cancels, (1) and (2), for Finland. Since I don’t collect Finland I have no idea how many of this style canceler may have been used there. The look and style of the Finnish devices is too similar to the July 1903 Zurich to disregard.

The hunt continues.

Did I hear my name?

All is well here. There reasons why I haven't been on this Board are various:
- I am indeed (generally) busy (both at University and at home), not too much spare time to spend chatting unfortunately.
- triangular stamps seem to have a long low season here. I find very little (which is also affordable) on eBay nowadays.
- I don't have a fellow-trianglecollector in the Netherlands anymore, adding to the decline in the attention my stamps get.
- I was really fed up with the 'fights' on the Stamp Board. The Board should be fun and a source of information basically.
- Occasionally I was a bit put off by the US-centered character of the Board.
- And last but by no means least: I am involved more and more in another serious hobby: bass guitar. (Playing, organising a national meeting, etc.)

It is nice to hear some people remember me here. I might show up from time to time. If I have the feeling that I do have a sensible contribution....

All the best;
Maarten

2. A preprinted wrapper from England sent to Germany, which has a perfin. Does anyone know the value of this wrapper??

Knud-Erik,
Am having another cup myself! Cheers! ;-).
The Postal Card with Swiss dues is certainly interesting (at least for me ;-), a good find indeed!
I guess that the item might be of a little less relevance for a German Postal Entires collector, since the card appears to miss a little piece of the top right corner.
[I saw another nice one of three years before here (price is a tad bit too close to catalogue value, though ;-))]

However, I see that its goodness is dwarfed by your other find, the one from Lodz to South Africa and back.
But I don't collect these ;-)

Best, Paolo

A volcano has erupted on tiny Jabal al-Tair island off the coast of Yemen, spewing lava and ash hundreds of feet into the air, a nearby Canadian naval vessel reported Sunday. Bill C.,
Thank you for your kind words.

There is a relatively new theory on the embossing impressed with the first method (or type I embossing), according to which the effigies were not impressed with a plate of 50 (5 x 10) but one by one.
This theory is supported on the base of assumptions: the second method (or type II embossing) of impressing the effigies, a punch, male and female, made of two effigies aligned horizontally, is seen as an improvement of the first method, to speed up production of stamped values (also revenue stamps were validated with effigies in a similar way). But this new theory, which I still couldn't prove wrong for lack of large blocks of stamps of the early printings (which are extremely rare), contradicts all what was known and explained in the detail on the IV Issue of Sardinia from the writings of Emilio Diena, Lajolo, Rattone, Chiavarello (nay all R.I.P) and several others, who, at their time (from about 30 to more than 100 years ago), had well the chance to study not only large blocks of the first printings of 1855-1858 but also (almost) entire sheets thereof.
I gather that to ease the sale of these blocks of rare stamps, over the past century unscrupulous business men, like mr. B. in Turin just to mention one, have reduced it into smaller blocks or strips or even single units in some cases, thus reducing the chances of proving what above.
Like I was cheerfully saying to Mr. Umberto B., who doesn't take any part and is a very friendly individual, bring me a vertical or an horizontal pair of stamps of the first printings, one with normal standing embossing and one with inverted embossing and this new theorem will be demonstrated. This is just a reductio ad absurdum of this new theory, because such pairs have never been described in the literature I know of.

Paolo
