Not a lot of information to go on, but it may be a Canadian Postal Card:

3c Postal Cards-Canada

These were issued 1964-1967 when the cost to mail a domestic postal card was 3c

lou4cards: glad you enjoyed it. Were there any postcard exhibits at the show? Some of the major stamp shows now allow postcard exhibits.

I had an exhibit at the show, which won a gold medal...

Returned from the Philadelphia National Stamp Exhibition about dinner time spent about 3 hours there. The exibits were nice. I don't know much about standards for exibits but I enjoyed them. Grand daughter had a good time looking for horses, cats, and dogs. She even bought some post cards. Next show I'll have a better idea what to expect. Seen a dealer who does a small monthly show in the area. Seen several dealers (not selling) who I see at local auctions. Next year my wife wants to go for the post cards.

Having just won two low value lots in $$ I am delighted that the current exchange rate of £1 = $2 makes my purchases even cheaper! No use my trying to sell in ££ though as they are much more expensive to USA purchasers. Incidentally, I find the eBay UK practice of not listing on eBay USA if you list on eBay UK counterproductive to them, as now when I do list my lots I list on the USA site, as there are a vast number more Japan lots there than on the UK site.

Sascha,

Good morning to you! The Australians are probably still asleep at this hour so I'll give it a shot.

Australia accepts as valid for postage stamps from Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Australian Antarctic Territory and (I believe) Christmas Island (Indian Ocean).

I'm not sure about the airmail rate Australia to West Germany in 1964 but 1 shilling 2 pence should have been enough.

Nice cover!

Actually, the ZIP code 10570-2799-00 is the ZIP for Pace University in Pleasantville. The ZIP on the PVIs is the ZIP of the office to which the mail piece is addressed. The name, Brooklyn in this case, is the office of mailing.

Mexico??? Did someone say Mexico? I'm running on fumes (literally) trying to reorganize my Mexican stuff. The coins may be kewl, but the stamps are a watermarker's nightmare.

On the other hand, watermarks can be fun too. On Friday I got a really neat Egyptian watermark error. It's a 10 carmine from the 1957 "Egypt, Tomb of the Agressors" set that wasissued to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the revolution. The normal stamp should be watermarked with eagles and "Republic of Egypt" in Arabic. This one has a crown and an Arabic F. One sheet of 100 is known. Somebody goofed and ran the wrong sheet of paper through the printer.

Actually the 19th century Mexican stuff is even neater. (keep in mind that until 1857 Mexican and related spanish colonial coinage was legal tender in the US, and the basis for postal rates such as 12 1/2 cents (i.e., 1 real).

When Mexico did its monetary reform in the early '90s, the first few years of the 10 new pesos and 20 new pesos actually had some silver in them. Both were bimetallic -- aluminum bronze ring with a silver center. Neat stuff.
Posted by antonius-ra   ( 641 ) on Sep-08-07 at 16:23:09 PDT   Listings
220man It is a 5 peso (2004) coin. The coinage of Mexico is preety kewl in the last 20 years or so but it's all very common. I just put all of those units in a drawer because they are worth more to look at than the actual value.

due2 - your bilingual Canada marking is new to me and I have collected the area for over 35 years.

It is unusual to me for a couple of reasons -

1. The airmail rate on the cover to the US is straightforward and as basic as it comes. I can rationalize no reason for needing such a marking even in english for this cover.

2. Canada has quite a few bilingual (English/French) markings but they were primarily used in the province of Quebec. Your cover is from Ontario and thus its use peculiar.

vax2… You asked your question at an inopportune time—the board is pretty dead after 9 pm Pacific Time US (eBay time).

Yep, fingerprints on gum is a big no-no. Make sure your hands are very dry before you separate mint stamps with them. Fold between the stamps along the holes, then fold them back the other way, then tear.

Jim
Posted by mini*lindy   ( 461 ) on Sep-07-07 at 23:03:59 PDT   Listings
VAX THIS IS a message board, and you need to check back every few hours to see if you get a response, particularly when you post in what is the middle of the night USA TIME.
STAMPS should ALWAYS be handled with stamp tongs, or stamp tweezers (not eyebrow or medical ones, special STAMP ones), stamps should NEVER be touched with fingers front or back and oils in the skin can mark the paper over time, and yes, fingerprints on the gum could be considered faults. If separating lots of stamps you should make sure you hands are perfectly dry and clean, then fingerprints will not occur.

Evening/morning/afternoon from a dark NJ.

It is indeed old home week. Also small world week here in NJ. Do any of the old hands here remember ddetr? The reason I ask is that I bought a few things from an accumulation of archaeologically-related stamps that were his. They had already passed through several hands, but his name was attached to a few things.

Dave D: If you're still reading this board, I now have a couple of misregistered modern Egyptian stamps and a block of 4 of the Sleeping Lady of Malta with an printing error from your collection. And a few other things of course.

Prochute, according to RL, Vol. III, Asia,

" The dimensions of the genuine overprint are,

Height 5 3/4mm.
top loop of B 2 1/2mm.
lower loop of B 3 1/2mm.

Any tendency of the serifs to splay outwards indicates a forged overprint. ".

If you look at the lot I reference you will see the serifs are perfectly straight.

Have a look at these on the Wikipedia site, thye also show straight serifs,

prochute, there is more than one type of the original B. Used stamps with fake B's usually have a Singapore cancel which ID's them straight away. Mint are more difficult.

This stamp shows the genuine cancel,

Jim/jaywild: Thanks to you for the identifiers you've put up. I have some late-19th/early-20th century US covers (I've mentioned them before) where I'd like to correctly identify the stamp (and the cancels) before putting them up for auction. The identifiers, especially the W-F, are really helpful to a US-novice like me!

Alexios, since nobody else has answered since you asked two days ago: My catalogues don't specify international express rate, but I suppose it might be the same as domestic (non-local) at 80pf. In that case, your letter would have been 2 weight classes lighter than your estimate. BTW the franking is 2RM, not 2DM. Just to be a bit picky. :-)

The newest Michel Briefe-Katalog says 150 Euros for "Mehrfrankatur" whcich normally means two of this stamp, a 4-block would be considerebly more, if postage is exactly correct. German collectors are apparently very picky about that.
Haven't been following this board for a while as I've been very busy, among other things typing in the descriptions for the local club's autumn auction, 612 in all. That plus mushroom hunting: it can take much longer to process them after getting home, than it took to pick them. Especially on Sunday, when I filled a 10 litre bucket with Lactarius trivialis in half an hour. :-)

220man… The precancel looks good as far as my knowledge goes. The stamp should also be untagged, since tagging is not necessary for stamps that are already canceled. Tagging merely tells the canceling machine how to orient a cover so that the cancel hits the stamp.

mstank Welcome to the stamp bulletin board. People come and go here so answers can take a while. What you describe is a printing freak rather than an error per se. The value depends on the eye appeal of the freak. What probably happened was that something was on the paper when printed and later fell off. It is probably worth a few dollars, but will not put your kids through collage.

I purchased some forever stamps at the post office the other day and when I got them home one of the books has a bell when the coloring is only complete in half the bell. All the other 19 stamps in the book have good color. I am wondering if this is considered an error and if so if there is any way to find out about what the value might be.

PS:
the night is still young,
but I'm a bit sleepy.
Have some hundreds of stamps to be "done".
I temporised on these for lack of space.
Space and organisation are important for me.
Time never was a problem with my things.
Many nice full town names of the time that was.
They could easily put ridicule on the "SON" word so often improperly used in the eBay auctions.
What an abuse of adjectives.
And yet, several different little printing differences whispering at you: "did you see me now? I come on here and on there, here I am, it's still me! How couldn't you see me the other day?"
You can either get this kind of animistic material very cheap or very expensive. Difficult to get it for a way inbetween, for me.
That is the thrill when following the drill.
I sincerely wouldn't know what to do if I had them all on covor!
They would be all extremely common on , then.
Besides, I wouldn't have had the space.
I just use some covers when I go to sleep.
It never was one of my priorities, sleeping.

A bunch of canceled bids like that for the same reason usually occur on a hacked account. The seller gets an e-mail on the order of "Someone is selling an item using your picture" with a link to it - and hes is asked by "eBay" to sign in to see it. Or any number of other ploys.

The hacker cancels all the bids and sends the bidders e-mails to offer the item at a lower price, and how to pay for it.

This scam tactic has been around for several years now.

Ken Srail,
I think you've come across the key. The seller probably had an offer he couldn't refuse off line (like maybe the $2100). He agreed to end the sale but encountered the 12 hour rule. He then cancelled enough of the other bids to assure himself that the reserve would not likely be met. I suspect he looked in frequently to make sure that no one else had raised the bid significantly. He probably would have cancelled any other bid which was greater than the reserve. Things do get complicated.

P.S. the experiment with Ribbed Paper (geripptes papier) began somewhere in February 1851.
The printed and gummed paper (*) was vertically ribbed with special cylindrical calenders.
1. to avoid gum wrinkling
2. to allow the ink of the cancel to penetrate deeply into the paper.
In the meanwhile thereafter, the various plates and compositions of the 15 CENTES had accommodated in their sinus both Type I and Type II.

(*): It is important to remember that this macroscopic mechanical treatment of the paper happened after the stamps were printed and after the paper was gummed on the reverse side.
I recall it is recorded that sometimes ribbing was made on the wrong side.
Examples with full original gum are therefore those which maintain the ribbing depth at its best.
Soak it in water for too long and there goes down to the drains part of the "pepper" (scandinavian for paper, nice pun) ribbing.

David B.,

Interesting question.

However, the order Type I and Type II is pretty chronological.
Plate 1 of the 15 centes had all stereotypes of Type I.
These changed position during the subsequent printings from June 1850. There are therefore various compositions of plate I.
Later it appeared Type II, also introduced to correct the plate error in the writing "KK POST" on top left of the vignette which looks like "KF POST" in all of the stamps of Type I (look at the block of four below).
Bewteen brackets, the stamps of Type I derive from the stereotype of a 30c. value, which was modified to accomodate the new value inscritpion.
Those from Type II, appeared from July 1851, 1 year and one month after the first Issue of 15c. Type I, instead derive from a modified stereotype of the 10 CENTES.

Thus, logic asks for all catalogues to call Type I the first and Type II the subsequent, in order of time.

jimbo, for cancelling bids, sellers have two options: Cancel all bid(s) from a single bidder, or cancel ALL bids for ALL bidders (and end the listing.) I'd guess the seller tried to do the latter (mistakenly?,) but ran into one of eBay's sillier rules: you can't "end an auction early" when there's less than 12 hours to go.

Knowing how goofy eBay's programming is, it wouldn't surprise me if a seller is able to cancel all bids, but only THEN (after the damage is done) find out it's too late to end the auction...

Paul,
The 15c. used postage stamp in that auction (200148207915) is not a 15c. Type II, but it is a Type I.
When on ribbed paper, Type II is scarcer than Type I, with a value ratio value of about 3:1.

Ken, thanks for the added insight. At least that explains a mechanism for the cancellations. I suspect it may be possible for the seller to see the ids for the bidders even in such an auction. The seller might have concluded that the bidders were colluding or all the same person and that the bids were not made in good faith. Anyway, it's an interesting eBay offering.

As you may observe from this block of four of the 15 centes on ribbed paper... with full o.g.:

the three stamps are type I and one (lower left) is type II.

Good day all!

Re. Italy Postal Card to Germany, nicely handcrafted on reverse (eBay item #190149529416):
Postal Card 10 c. Issue of 24.10.1896 (Unificato Storia Postale N.29 -- cat. for normal use Euro 7.50 in 2003) from Nervi in prov. of Genova (squared circle CDS, Gaggero type IG, 2 points, common) sent on 4/12/96 to Wiesbaden (D), received on the same month of December 1896.
Rate 10 centesimi for foreign Postal Cards sent abroad, from 1.7.1892.
So, until here nothing special; I particularly like the handmade design on reverse, although this doesn't add on the philatelic value of the Postal Card.

Probably a good item for a thematic collector (I think I know who the high bidder is... could be an acquaintance of mine from the Aste Marzocco, the director of it, who has a good taste for these sort of handcrafted postal documents).

Roger,
I agree, too long sun exposure.
I hope you will have a very nice vacation!
Take care & all the best!

Re. Lombardy Venetia, how come 37 dollars for a single stamp:
you may have had to pay about 300 times more for this "item"
45 centes Type I, ribbed paper, unused with O.G. (C. Ferchenbauer, Sorani and Raybaudi), one of the two known copies with O.G.

should add also ,not likely that that stamp was given a fake ribbing ,because there are other design changes that make it a type II not just the ribbing .........off to work

RICH-------Nobody can tell if a stamp is ribbed from the scan .First you got to buy it ,take delivery and then find a expert ,then have a expert looks at it .Since its priced low and mostly likely only on the sellers guarantee .It will be a risk for who ever purchases it,but could be a reward for the buyer who gets a good cert.

There is always the argument why that stamp doesn't already have a cert. and why the buyer is willing to accept a lower price .Somebody out there will take the risk and maybe be rewarded .

Rich,

Chaswilly is an expert on Lombardy Venetia and he may be able to tell if the ribbing is genuine or has been added to the stamp. There are many fakes of the ribbed paper and they should only be bought with certificates,

jimbo, on the auction you asked about yesterday, I noticed the bids were "cancelled" not "retracted." That tells me the seller did it, not the bidders, and it would explain the rapid succession of cancellations.

If e***g did actually enter an errant bid, he wouldn't have been able to retract it (was within 12 hours of close.) He would have had to beg the seller to cancel for him. The seller obviously obliged, but why they cancelled everyone's bid, rather than just e***g's, is unknown.

RICHINTALENT -----Those Lombardy-Venetia are highly pursuited by specialist and those trying to fill the Brown's.It is part of the early classics much like the German states or Italian states stamps.

Your stamp is the very rare ribbed paper variety and comes with a guarentee from the seller ,expect that stamp to go about 20 times higher or more than what you bid on it .Maybe I should throw in a bid if your not going to .Nice stamp if its what it is ......paul

le-toile-par-julie try visiting this site. Assuming you have a high speed internet connection you can click on the number ranges in the left panel, which brings up images of the various Scott Catalog number stamps in the right pane. Try 178-181 .... is the 5 cent stamp the same design as your stamp? If so it could be Scott Catalog number 179 or 185 or 204. If that's not the design as your stamp, try 215-218 and see if that 5 cent stamp is the same design as your stamp.

The originals of the Lithographed series must be worth considerably more than the reprints. I have sorted through over 1000 of them this evening, and found only 3 Original Printings; 5pf, 15pf and 20pf.

I could sort through all of my 4000 some-odd typographed issues now, but will probably pass, as it won't be worth the watermark fluid. Still, it is the thrill of knowing a little something about the set that makes it interesting. Again, thank you for all of your help.

No need for expert. Go to your libraryand look in the Scott catalogue in the refrence section. You will probably find the stamp, and most likely it will be the one with th lowest value. If it has any flaws, the value won't even be close to the price in the catalogue. The 5c stamp was used most often for international mail (I think).

Jimbo

Makes no sense whatever.
Except if the underbidders thought that there was something untoward going on and did not want to be a part of it.

They would not have won it because of the reserve.
I can't imagine anyone in such a situation wanting to be contacted for a second chance bid.

due2cents,
But all the other 8 bids had been made before the breakout bid of $2100 made by e***g. Nothing would have changed if things were 'normal' and the bids just dropped back to n***h being the high bidder at $405 (?) with a now rehidden bid of $456 and b***3 being the underbidder at $400. The reserve would still not be met. The only bidder whose bid would not have been extended to his limit was the underbidder (n***h).

I can imagine that there might be some wild logic which says that if your bid caused someone else's high bid to be revealed then your bid would be cancelled but that seems really counterproductive. But what do I know. You have to understand, it's eBay and they do things oddly at times.

I signed in to MY EBAY, and found that there is no ALERT. There is nothing in MY MESSAGES - nothing on my email. I changed my Ebay password, and got the ALERT in MY MESSAGES, that I had changed my Password, but no mention of an ALERT for non-payment of fees. Was this page hijacked by someone? Has anyone else experienced this??

dragonstamps,
it is Michel 12aa, which is brownish red (braeunlichrot) in the old Michel color naming system, and the dark vermilion red (dunkelzinnoberrot) in the new naming system.
As for the remainder of the set, the grid cancel is most common on the 1/2 and 1 Ngr., somewhat uncommon on 2 and 3 Ngr., only 3 known on 10 Ngr., and an unknown (but presumably also very small) number on 5 Ngr.

Yes, someone was fishing, but how did they coordinate 9 bid cancellations in less than 1 minute? Me thinks there were was one person with quite a few names registered on eBay. Now will the first canceller come back with a winning snipe of $1200?

Now what would the bid have to be to win the lot? Would one increment over $1200 be enough to win? We'll know soon enough.

David there were several eBayers in the eBay Cafe last night complaining about ebay account problems! must have been a glitch somewhere.

Jimbo obviously those bidders were 'fishing' to find the Reserve price.
Actually ebay stipulates that if you retract a bid for wrong amount entered you must immediately go back to the auction and enter a 'correct' amount. If reported they could get warnings from eBay.

Postalviews eBay introduced that NO CASH ruling at least a year, if not more, ago. I remember we discussed it in here.
They also sent out several Announcements about it at the time.

NOIP,
Here's an eBay bidding history for a "Rare 1970 new/boxed professional black "Minolta SR-M" ". The item had a reserve price. At 7:37 this morning when the high bid was slightly over $400 but still below the reserve, e***g bid $2100 which revealed a reserve price of $1200.

So far so good. At 11:07:45 today the bid was cancelled as "wrong bid." Within less than 1 minute, the next 8 bids were cancelled in the sequence of their size - high to low!

Anyone got any ideas of what is going on here? Anyone seen this sort of thing before? Sounds like collusion or shill bidding or something.

dbenson,
the grid cancel is quite common on the earlier Saxony issues, it is ubiquitous on Michel 3-7, the 1851/1852 King Frederick Augustus II issue, and even on the King John I 1/2 Ngr. to 3 Ngr. denominations, it only commands a slight premium, primarily when on complete cover. However, the 5 and 10 Ngr. were issued so close to the discontinuation date of grid cancels that strikes on them are very rare indeed.

20pfg airmail fee,
50pfg express fee,
25pfg 1st 20gr
15pfg x 7 = 105pfg, 2nd-8th weight steps,

thus making it a 160gr cover. Can anybody confirm this? Can anybody let me know what is the cat. price for Mi396 used as block of 4 on cover is?

NOIP… Some interesting covers came in today. The covers at top and in the middle were mailed only two months apart, when the rates were the same, yet the one on top is franked with a 20¢ prexie and the one below it with the 21¢ prexie. A mistake? No—the first cover was sent from Plymouth MA to Plymouth MA, and thus was eligible for the drop letter rate, which at the time was 2¢. The letter below it was not “local”, therefore the full first class rate (3¢) was paid.

The registry rate was 15¢ and the return receipt was 3¢ for both letters.

The bottom letter was mailed in 1947, after the registration rate had increased to 20¢. First class postage was free for active duty servicemen until December 31 1947, so he only paid the registration fee.

uppercanadian "mit Entwerder" - with cancellation; "Stecherzeichen" - engraver's marking or printer's mark. On DDR stamps, they usually appear on the lower left or lower right margins. It can make a huge difference in the catalog value, particularly if mint, never hinged. That is a tough set to sort through - most the of the CTO's were printed cancellations and therefore reduce the value to practically nothing (wallpaper, so to speak). Perhaps our recently retired "face-kicker of midgets" can post four or five pages of these normally worthless stamps.

Jay,

Thanks for posting those pics. My Michel Specialised is from 1982. Surprisingly, there have been few changes over the last 25 years, including the pricing, although mine is priced in DM, whereas I assume yours is recent enough for Euro prices.

What does "mit Entwerter - i.Stecherzeichen mean on the chart on page 1?

I am still confused though, as I see nothing in Michel that corresponds with the sentence in Scott alluding to a reprint of the first issue.

Thanks for everyone's help though.

Not sure, but, I think that one of the examples I've seen posted of outrageous results for PSE graded 100 stamps was a Norse-American. If you are going for beware that "pretty close" doesn't cut it as the difference between a grade of 100 and not worth PSE's fee is pretty small. A few weeks ago someone wrote about a download program to analyse a scan to avoid wasting money sending them copies which won't cut it.

How can you tell how many 100s there are?

220man - I looked up that Micarelli character on Amazon and although the first few listing indicated his musical leanings, I did scroll down and find the correct Micarelli and the book referenced. It is offered used anywhere from $24 to $150. Hmm. Which one to choose?

Claghorn1p - Just got back from the stamp club meeting here in Austin. They were very helpful and kind. I asked if they ever bought stamps on ebay and one woman replied, "Why, no, but I've heard people do that sort of thing." I said, "Yes, yes, they do."

I might go to the auction on the third Thursday, but so far it seems that this group is selling stamps from the 70s and up. At the moment anyway.

Jaywild;

Of course your conclusion is only valid assuming there aren't additional people who are willing to buy the additional highest-graded copies as they are uncovered? It's not all as simple (the grading thing) as many folks like to make it sound. I have no vested interest either way, but I'm a big believer in allowing the marketplace to sort out how it feels about grading (or anything).

There was an excellent discussion about grading on the Virtual Stamp Club some weeks back and I'm sure it could easily be accessed by anyone who wishes to get into it further.

uppercanadian… I have copied the relevant pages on your “Five-Year Plan” workers sets from DDR from my 1981 Michel catalog (not the Specialized).. They are page 1, page 2, and page 3. (Files are up to 400kb, so may take a moment to load.) If you read German, or can translate what’s printed, you might be home free.

I have to say I can’t see how the entire stamp could have been typographed, but certainly the overprints on the overprinted varieties could have been printed that way.

Not much help, I’m afraid…

Another question - hope you don't mind.

Can someone give me a basic breakdown of the East Germany 1953 Industrial Workers definitives. This is what I can discern.

Scott lists the first set of 1953 as Lithographed (Offset) as Sc#155-171. They then list the redrawn issues which are Typographed as Sc#187-204.

My confusion is that after #171, the catalogue reads, "Used values ....are for CTO reprints with printed cancellations. The reprints differ slightly from originals in design and shade."

Am I correct in assuming that the "reprints" that they refer to are not Sc# 187-204??

I am looking at a chart in Michel, where they list each design and there are columns for only one Offsetdruch (Litho) set.

I would be grateful for any guidance.

Thanks,

Brad Fallon

Matt in OH… Yes, I was simply using generalizations to make a point, which I still think is valid. High graded stamps are the new gold rush, and the more that are found and certified, the less the ones already certified will be worth.

To use your example, if there are currently only 2 7¢ prexies rated at 100, how much do you think the first dropped in value after the second one was discovered? It was suddenly no longer unique, and as time goes on others will turn up to further devalue it.

uppercanadian... I yield to your point…

Working through my East German DDR stamps. I am winding it down now and have just completed the 1948 Famous German Definitives. I have separated them by the two different watermarks, the "Multiple Flowers", and "DDR & Post Horn".

In Scott, they list the 80pf Ernst Thalmann with the DDR & Post Horn watermark (Sc#134), as also being found with a Varnish Coating and a Dark Ultramarine in colour.

What is the best way of determining whether there is varnish or not. I have one I suspect as having it, as it appears marginally shinier when held diagonally to the light, feels smoother, and is a different shade than the others. But, as I want to sell it, I would prefer to find a more full-proof (or perhaps fool-proof), method of making the determination. Is there another way??

Secondly, when selling stamps with different watermarks, do people here generally try to get a scan of the watermark? I have listed a few Australian Roos, and have had some luck scanning the stamp in a petrie dish with a drop of watermark fluid and black backing. It is a bit of a bother though.

Many thanks,

Brad Fallon

Jay,

Although I applaud the American people's austerity when it comes to the "U" in words such as 'labor', I must however take exception to the fact that your printing presses have been saving oil. If the American's would desist from using the term "Washroom", "Toilet", or "Water Closet", and use the much more pleasing "Loo", think of how much could be saved in terms of ink and oil!! 8^)

Thanks for your informative e-mail.
I couldn't solve the quiz yet, but I think it has something to do with a wrong date, could be earlier than 1862, and an inverted date slug in the origin postamrk.

Jim: I know your statement is really for purposes of illustration, but no prexy has ever been graded 100J (at least not that is reflected in the population report). There are 2 7 cent Prexies graded 100. There are a couple values in the prexy series that still have no examples graded 100.

I don't think they are quite as easy to find as people think. (if they are, I should spend more time looking at stamps and sending a few in).

Rainer… The mania for superbly centered stamps has reached a fever pitch in this country. Already there has been a backlash effect—at first only a few of the “prexy” stamps had ratings of 100 or 100J, and they commanded outlandish prices. But since there are so many MNH prexies still out in the world, many more were discovered that are just as perfectly centered, so now many buyers are waking up to find that the one-in-a-million 100J 7¢ prexie they lavished $1000 on are becoming as plentiful as fleas as the stampede of 7¢ prexies to PSE continues unabated.

Moral of the story: Some people will buy anything, especially if they are encouraged to think they will be making a killing at someone else’s expense. Only too late do they discover that they have bit themselves in the [xxx].

Mitchell, Jim/jay, Jim/bo, Jim/io, & Sheryll: Many, many thanks for the web hosting and domain registrar information. Thanks to you all, I know a lot more about this now than I did at the start of the day, and will make a decision very soon. It's good to have personal recommendations to help sort through all the choices. Thanks so much! (And I can see that I'm significantly overpaying my current providers.)

Frieda: I collect Japan, but am still no expert on the early issues. Sometimes I can tell, and sometimes I can't.

The big forgery challenges are in the early definitive series, but not so much in the rest of the material, including commemoratives and later issues. You can get a rough idea of the three definitive series which present the most challenges by looking at this website (from the ISJP, same source as the CD referred to earlier):

http://isjp.org/Expert/index.html

As others have written, you can link here to scans of your stamps and people will try to help you identify the problem items before you list them.

Best of luck! (And hope you continue to make a speedy recovery!)

The basic books on 19th Century U.S. adhesive postage stamps. The 1st and 2nd editions are quite similar as to text but the 2nd was expanded, mostly by adding photographs.
1947, 1st edition, two volumes, 3l9 and 306 pages, cloth $95.00
1947, 1st edition, two volumes, 319 and 306 pages, cloth, used but not abused $75.00

frieda7007 Your stamp has the characteristics of a Spiro forgery.

1) The center circle of the round crest at the top is too large.

2) The crest itself is not round. The 16 petal chrysanthemum is the Royal crest and the Japanese take pride in this. They would not be that sloppy.

3) The stamen in the flower upper left 8 o'clock is too small

4) The cancel is not typical Spiro but also not typical of the period.

I use 1&1 internet services as well. I have the $4.99 a month package (which they bill at 6 month intervals for $29.94). I also get two domain registrations free and pay $5.88 annually for two more. (I still have to get one more domain transferred to them - that's a pain because of the involvement of the present registrar.)

1&1 has really been quite satisfactory. The system is up almost all of the time (I can't remember a time when it wasn't) and their tools are relatively easy to use. My feeling is, "Try 'em; you'll like 'em!"

Dave F… I use 1&1 internet services, which costs me $5 a month for two webpages and up to 1500 email addresses.

Since it's kind of slow on here this weekend, may I ask an off-topic question?

Does anyone have recommendations for domain registration companies and for web-hosting companies?

If you'd rather reply off-list by email instead of here, my email address is on my "ME" page.

Thanks in advance,

-- Dave

uppercanadian & mini*lindy… If you stop and think, we Americans have saved untold thousands of barrels of oil that would have gone to waste printing the superfluous “u” in all those words like labor, favor, harbor etc. Each unnecessary letter uses up a tiny droplet of ink, which is usually made from petroleum, and for what? If people accustomed to seeing “labour” can’t figure out that “labor” is the same word, then they have no business reading anything.

So next time you are ready to drop a diss on wasteful Americans, please think first of your own profligate, devil-may-care ways, and perhaps you will hold your tongue.

☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺

And Miss Lindy, please have a fond remembrance day of your father.

Jim

Thanks. I'm aware that 832c was dry-printed and was printed much later.
