stamps12345 Paul: Thanks for your input.

I miss going to Stamp Shops. First one I ever visited was John Ross's Store back in '59. His shop was right next to a Garrett's Popcorn shop. To this day, I would say, that they make the best Karmelcorn that I have ever tasted!

A few block's down was Ace Coin & Stamps.

Speaking of Chicago: In my opinion 3 terrible things have happened in the loop recently. They are: No more Marshall Field's as such, no more Carson Pirie's, and the Berghoff Restaurant closed.I visited those place for over 50 years. Heck even Rasdale's moved out to the boonies. Ted.

TED L. There is no easy answer to your question .There are too many varibles to the question .

For example good bargins can be found on e-bay but also a lot of over-price stuff with lots of junk being sold.Today it would be safe to say e-bay is now the retail price market .

Mail bids are something i don't trust and have been told that one of the biggest firms actually opens the bids in front of a select group who can bid it higher .There is too much room for abuse.

Bourses can be fun to look at material and meet dealers but prices are generally at the highest .I leave them alone other than supplies.

Public auctions are the best for me ,but do understand not all auctions or auction firms are equal .Some firms ,most local firms own the material or work with a small group of consignors who uphold prices. These firms also offer more low class material and don't get the name collections .There are about six firms in the U.S. that get the bulk of the big collections and leave better material in their collection lots .You can determine which firms these are by the higher value of the better stamps .This small group of firms also get the smaller auction houses bidding in them to supply their auctions with material .

Do understand what works for me may not work for others or they have different needs ......paul-who has open and active accounts with five firms

due2… The top line under the stamp on your card probably says LICENCES. See here—the last letter is not a P because it would be out of line with the LICE (red line) so I’m guessing it is an S. The second line seems to read “For” at the start but the rest is obscured by the stamp, but might be “Sale”, thus “LICENCES For Sale”. The lines under that are unreadable to me.

Alec, go and buy a cheap international phone card, get a friend who speaks the Queen''s English to phone the buyer and ask him Wotsup, I am sure there is a misunderstanding somewhere and only a direct call to the buyer will solve it,

due2 - can't fool a fooler!

alec - paypal has a contact number, have you spoken with anyone there via telephone?

I had 2 peculiar experiences -

Once I used my paypal card at a gas pump and inadvertently pushed the credit card button. The amount was like $25 but they temporarily debited $50 for a week, I don't recall the reason.

Another time I made a direct purchase to a collector and messed up his email address. Bad thing is that it was someone else's e-mail address - a good address. It took about 2 weeks to get that resolved, amount was for $100+

both probs were my fault.

Hi Happy Stampers! (not you, jaywild, you're being cranky!) Despite my ebay name change, this is Deb, formerly oceanvu2. I haven't checked in in months after shipping almost all my stamp stuff to my son, who has done NOTHING with it! Even if he just reboxed it an sold it by the pound, he'd make out, since it was free... Ah well, apparently he has more money than time.

I had a rough time with my multiple sclerosis, major exacerbation! There is something to be said for hallucinations, they're amusing. Not much to be said for the bone deep ulcer on my butt I got while 5 weeks in hospital! I'm glad to be back home and away from skilled nursing care!

Good to see old and fresh faces.

Paypal dispute update As expected Paypal have closed the dispute with no explanation as to why the buyers payment was recalled. Not a word from buyer .In short I am out $43. Lodged an unpaid item complaint with ebay but doubt that will do me any good either.
To be honest pretty disgusted with Paypal's attitude. I could understand the recall if the item wasn't delivered or I was cheating the guy. But that is one thing I am not. They honestly expect every seller to insist on buyers having registered mail ? If that was to happen just watch the sellers vanish into thin air as very few philatelists will be willing to pay the high postage costs on what is mainly cheaper end items bought on ebay.

It's hard not to feel like telling Paypal to go to hell and cancel my account with them. It sure seems to me as if the dice are loaded in the favour of the dishonest buyer.

I did state to Paypal I have no problem with there being a safeguard for buyers and sellers. But if they are going to have one make it fair in that buyers are protected also only if they pay and ask for a trackable mail delivery service.Under current rules a seller takes all the risks if sending normal mail to ANY buyer of any item who does not have the item sent via a tracking system. So be warned all you sellers out there what can happen.

Like I have said before it's not the money that annoys me but the simple fact that the dishonest buyer has everything in their favour.

Late here in the UK around 11 pm so I'll read any comments tomorrow.

Question for those on this board who also purchase stamps at bourses, public auctions, mail bid sales etc:

How do you think the prices stamps realize here on e-bay, compare to the prices you pay from above alternate sources for stamps, in your areas of interest?

If you wish, you may indicate your area or areas of interest, to give me more specific information. Thanking you in advance, Ted Lawrence.

jim: doesn't strike me as twisted as all. Bhutan and Sierra Leone are both known for stamps in odd formats, shapes, and materials, as is Tonga. Ras Al Khaima, or at least #209, quite probably falls in the same category (presumably a gold foil stamp).

emerald2p - I'd add - have a look at the backs of the stamps in question. If a faintly raised impression of the overprint is visible, it must be typo - the pressure on the raised type pushing down into the surface of the paper. No such impression with litho, as it's from a flat surface, so no pressure on any raised parts. Of course, this depends on how heavily the typo overprint has been applied - if quite lightly, then the impression may well not show on the back of the stamp. So this isn't an infallible distinction.

Erm, does that make sense? An analogy would be - litho is vaguely akin to your computer printer, but typo is like an old fashioned manual typewriter, where if you bang on the keys it dents the paper.

emerald2p -

A lithographed surcharge will be printed from a flat printing surface and the impression SHOULD be uniform across the printed area with no buildup on the edges.

A typographed surcharge is printed from a raised surface and OFTEN shows irregularity in printing of the raised surface and OFTEN a buildup of ink on the edges of they raised type.

Others may have more

NOIP… Pardon my cynicism, but…

Any new system that has been created and touted as a wonderful new way to “communicate” and “share” is in reality just the latest ploy to shove more advertising and marketing down the publics’ throats. Also, any “improvements” eBay formulates are not designed to help you, dear user—they are dreamed up in the frantic, never-ending eBay search for more and more revenue. Thus the designers of the “new, improved” search function couldn’t care less how helpful it might be to buyers, in fact they are probably uniformly aware how irritating it is to have unwanted crap pushed at you relentlessly, but it’s hard to go against a corporate grain whose lack of intellect can be most accurately pegged by an inanity they introduced a couple years ago, which is still in effect. Namely, when search results come up, the bar at the top reads—

“[fill-in-the-blank] items in [fill-in-the-category] at low prices”. (Emphasis mine.)

This is dumbass marketing at its lamest. Who on the planet will be encouraged to bid on more auctions because the screen at the top of the page says the ones listed are “at low prices” with no regard whatever as to how out of line or ridiculous such prices really are? This brainturd had to have been a collaborative effort, and as such is perfectly emblematic of the corporate eBay mindset—the nameless drone (among thousands probably) who thought it up and a management team who, all the way up the line, jumped on it as a great idea.

Have others seen or tried to use the new search system for stamps? Obviously, this was created based on what IS NOT BEING SOLD OR SEARCHED FOR BY BUYERS that ebay is trying to help people find. Unfortunately, this same kind of material that better fits into there new "categories" just does not have a very good market; it is not that people just can't find the stuff. This is exactly the same problem of clogging supply that other institutions have. For me, I am now having a very difficult time zeroing in on my needs. Obviously, this was not created by someone who understands how people buy stamps and covers throughout the world, merely created in an attempt to help people find stuff that isn't currently selling (and WON'T). Very frustrated long time buyer.

Paul The bisected vertically parcel stamp was done with official authority for only a few days from 2 September 1939. The rate for a parcel to the miltary who had already been mobilised for war was 3 Francs so the 6 Franc overprinted stamp bisected was used as an emergency to meet the required rate.
With the use being only a few days I'd imagine genuine usage on parcel cards to be quite scarce. I don't know enough about Belgian parcel rates to tell you more.

Didn't think I was missing anything. Who needs blogs when one has this chat and Richard's Board? Last I need is a multitude of computers sending messages to mine telling me what I should be reading. I don't sign up for many "extra" services on eBay.

Today I went to buy a Buy IT Now and went to pay for it using Paypal. Half way through the process, Paypal wanted me to sign up my credit card. I've had a dedicated bank account for Paypal for many years and have never had a problem. I stopped the purchase process until I get an answer from Paypal. I don't want to use a credit card for buying stamps! The direct withdrawl from my account works very well with nobody else getting fees.

Good day all.

Roger

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) allows you to follow information from multiple online sources, such as news web sites or "blogs" (web logs), without having to surf all over the web to find it. RSS takes advantage of Extensible Markup Language (XML)to "feed" new content directly to your desktop.

Using an RSS reader, you can set up a nearly unlimited number of channels, or feeds, from various online sources that offer the technology. Whenever one of these sources is updated, the new information is pushed to your computer automatically in the form of a web link that appears in your RSS reader. By clicking on the link, you can access the entire original post or article.

In other words, SPAM.

Those of you sellers who use thumbnail images in your auctions…

It’s just a suggestion of course, but if this is the size of your “thumbnail†image and this is the “supersize†version, I don’t really understand why you bothered. Increasing the size of an image by 5% is not “supersizing†it, in fact you are really launching yourself down the royal road of p*ssing everybody off for having wasting time opening up a completely useless extra screen.

Have a Nice Day!!!

Iomoon… But the airmail stamp you describe is still current, or was until the recent rate change, because it pays a specific airmail rate. A corollary example would be the “current†$5 stamp, which was issued at least ten years ago, and likely took a while to get everywhere in the system. Commemoratives that pay the current one ounce first class rate are printed, distributed, and after a short period are no longer offered for sale except by mail order. Even then after a couple years all commems are withdrawn from sale.

Of course it is possible through tortuous circumstances for Susan’s post office to get commemoratives later than offices in bigger cities, but P O Central would not be distributing 37¢ stamps at this late date, when the price for first class mail has gone up twice since. Unless Susan’s P.O. also never got the notice that the rate has gone up since it was 37¢, in which case, I’m trucking all my mail there for sending!

☺

Hi Jim jaywild and thank you so much for your response. I probably didn't make myself clear - the lady at the post office didn't say that her "find" was recent. I just assumed that she found the imperf sheet at the time the stamps were issued and delivered to her. It *is* a small sub-station/gift shop, but still here in Boulder and I don't think it took THAT long for them to get here - LOL! I will have to ask her more about the sheet next time I go there.

She was also telling me about a man that frequents that office and uses collectible stamps for regular postage. It seems that his family isn't interested in his collection, so he's just using it! (I gave her my card to give him for the next time he comes in - I would offer to buy his unused stamps for face value, at least - if he's just trying to get rid of them.)

Since she mentioned these things, I would assume that she has at least some knowledge of collectible stamps, because she said she cringed every time she saw that man using old stamps for postage.

Thank you again for your responses and insight. I'll let you guys know more when I find out more about this - now I am intrigued!

Jim,

To quote:

They were issued in 2004, three years ago, and thus would not be in any post office’s current stock.

My friend bought, two weeks ago, the Rio Grande US airmail stamp (1999) which had just arrived at the post office in the Big Bend. (actually he bought every sheet they got, delivery can be a bit slow in the boonies).

susans*selections... Seriously, if the clerk’s stamps look like this, why is she just finding them now? They were issued in 2004, three years ago, and thus would not be in any post office’s current stock. Also, the red circle indicates that they are known with die-cutting omitted between two stamps, although not enough have surfaced to establish a market value. (That’s what the dash means.) No word apparently that full sheets without die-cutting (i.e. perforations) exist.

susans*selections... Go right back to that post office and tell that clerk she must surrender any misprinted or misperfed sheets of stamps to the proper authorities, such as myself. I will see to it that they are properly disposed of.

Hi everyone - I've never posted here, so please be gentle - LOL! I was chatting with the lady at my local post office subdivision and she said that she had a sheet of the Dr. Seuss stamps where none of them are perforated. I asked her if there were more like it, and she said no. (She obviously got them when a shipment of the stamps came in.)

I've never heard of these stamps being issued imperforated (like the Bugs Bunny one, for example). Has anyone heard of these? If not, would they have value, since they might be a one of a kind?

Thanks in advance!!!

BTW>

I bought a lot from a power seller in NY, the one who always says "Investment Quality" and "Must See!".

There were 21 stamps in the lot... 15 had faults, many were obvious.

So I emailed him/her and asked for a refund, based on the description that implied there were no faults.

Of course, I got no answer to my emails, so I contacted the PaykPal resolution Center, and within 2 days the seller asked me to return the stamps for a refund.

Here's the kicker...there's no return address! Not on the original PayPal notice, nor in the box in which it was sent.

So I went to my trusty Mapquest and entered the sellers company name and the city in NY he/she listed. Guess what? I got the name of a garage door company!

I should clarify: there was a shipping address on the box, but when I Googled it, I got the garage door company, a brick layer and several others with the same address. But no stamp business.

I've asked the seller via PayPal Resolution Center to send me his/her address.

To be continued.

Paypal dispute Thanks for the useful tip on how to obtain contact info when involved with ebay sale / purchase. Once I have the contact information I will have someone Stateside try and make a call to clarify the situation. It's also interesting to hear that others have also been affected by this what seems to me to be a very unreasonable and unfair discrimination against sellers.

No I am not to mean to make an international call. Somehow US friends have great difficulty in understanding the Glaswegian accent. For those that don't know it try a google search for Glaswegian and then see if you can even pronounce let alone understand my home city dialect :-)
PS Glaswegian is a native of Glasgow in Scotland.

Terry Re London On the 8th August there is a largish dealers fair which takes place at the Royal National Hotel, Bedford Way in Russel Square. 9am - 4pm. Not sure but I believe there is an underground station not far away from the Hotel. This is in the city of London so easily found.
There is a small weekly stamp market which takes place right next to Embankment Underground railway station every Saturday from 8am - early afternoon. Mixture of coins and stamps really but sometimes you can pick up the odd bargain.
If in London during the week and you are looking for literature then a visit to Vera Trinders is well worth a visit.
Stanley Gibbons are also only 5 minute walks from the Embankment show or Vera T. Though don't expect to find anything cheap at SG. Well not unless you are a specilaist of some area and happen to spot something they have missed.
Directly opposite from SG is another stamp shop. I say stamps but it also sells toys and games. Not cheap either but then again nothing in London is cheap these days.
Pretty sure there are one or two other stamps dealers in the city but I can't think who they are at the moment. Maybe one of the other UK regulars here can add some more information.
Depending on exactly where you will be staying in the London area it is also possible there might be a local stamp show running at the weekend.

Before World War II it was possible to buy 'photostamps' which were a perforated sheet of small (postage stamp-size) black and white prints of a single picture. These were often used to get lots of inexpensive prints of a picture of a child or adult to share with the extended family. I suspect that may be what you have come across.

DCderoo <.b> Late Fee in the USA was called "Supplementary Mail". It was for mail which was posted too late for the ship sailing date and the mail bags were sealed. THe letter was hand carried to the ship. The postage was double the normal rate. THe Supplementary mail postmarks are listed in Scott and some are priced. The Supplementary Mail postmarks in New York were often red rather than black so they stand out. There is a chapter on this in Van Vlissigen and Waud book on New York Foreign mail.

Some of the New York Foreign mail postmarks are only known in red for this reason. The covers and rates are interesting.

Supplementary Mail was also used in Boston and Philadelphia. In Boston and Chicago it was used for late fee mail to trains too. I do not know those rates as my area of study is NYFM.

PayPal I went to an electronics store and bought a new scanner as mine died. I also bought a new hard drive for my employer. As I was to be paid back for the hard drive I asked the store to make two transactions for two separate receipts.

The credit card company froze my account for "unusual activity". THey said that stolen cards are used for multiple transactions to find the credit limit. This is similar to the way uncertain bidders on eBay bid up lots by increments.

The result was that all credit card transactions for the last few days before the purchace were recinded until I called the credit card company and OK'ed each transaction by store and amount. I did not know until I returned home much later and caught a vague voice mail on my phone and called them. Geesh!

PayPal could be caught in the middle of such "security measures."

Regarding PayPal, sometimes the problem may not be with the buyer but with the source of funds. For example, let us say the buyer sold something and was paid with PayPal, and in turn use those funds to pay you. If it turns out the source of funds was bad, then PayPal can try and retrieve the money from you even though you were not part of the problematic transaction.

Alec: I had a problem with Paypal last year, similar to yours, the buyer had left positive feedback and then suddenly a few weeks later the amount was in dispute. She finally emailed back and explained that, in her case, her card was stolen and the bank automatically went back and questioned ALL transactions to even just before she reported it lost/stolen. It took a few weeks for it to get sorted out.

alec while I understand you maybe don't want to phone the US on this one, for future reference, you can get the telephone number of any member you are selling to/buying from by going to the eBay SITE MAP, on right is a heading CONNECT, under that is a link FIND CONTACT INFORMATION. If you enter the user id of your buyer eBay will email you the telephone number, and also email him yours. Can be handy for local transactions in future!

Similar happened to me this week in a restaurant when my credit card was bounced just because the waiter had entered the expiry date incorrectly (as I found out later). Fortunatley I knew the owner well who said come back another day and pay.

David buyer is in US so not really feasible to call from the UK, plus not sure I even have a contact telephone number though dare say could use ebay to try and get one. But if someone really is trying a scam on this then so be it. I tend to sell on trust and I guess at some point the odds are I would have or have indeed come across a con artist. Hopefully however it will all be resolved amicably.

Alec, don't wait, phone him and ask him, he may have made a mistake and didn't cross off the receipt of the item on his records and automatically claimed. When you mention that he left feedback it may click and he will cancel the claim,

David B.

David I see. So I will just have to wait and see what happens. Prior to today was reasonably happy with Paypal but now I must seriously reconsider wether accepting Paypal is worth the risk.
Gut instinct says yes because 99% of philatelists are perfectly honest and the problem is actually with a non philatelist. Oh well time will tell.
Posted by dbenson   ( 8442 ) on Aug-02-07 at 13:42:22 PDT   Listings
Alec, just because he left feedback doesn't prove anything, he can claim he left it by mistake. It had to be instigated by the buyer and he is the only one who can tell you why he did it and whether he intends to make a full claim against you. If and when he makes a claim then Paypal adjucicates it and the matter about feedback is in your favour but Paypal shoots first and asks questions afterwards,

David B.
Posted by infla-alec   ( 558 ) on Aug-02-07 at 13:37:40 PDT   Listings
David No it can't be non delivery as feedback has been left by buyer. I have mailed the buyer asking for an explanation. But as yet no response.
I've also mailed Paypal but again as yet no reply. It's not the money that annoys me it's the fact that it seems as if anyone can in effect claim a refund even when they haven't asked for registered mail.

Could the recall have been instigated by the buyers bank in any way I wonder ? Perhaps he used a credit card to make the payment and it has been refused for some reason ?
Posted by dbenson   ( 8442 ) on Aug-02-07 at 13:29:19 PDT   Listings
Alec,

it seems the buyer has placed a claim with Paypal that there is a problem and that he wants a refund. It may be a non delivery or another problem and it may be best if you phoned the buyer and asked him what he is up and why he made the claim.

For the first time ever I have a problem with Paypal. Yet it is one I don't understand. It is regards this Sold item. I received Paypal payment and left feedback accordingly and posted the item normal Airmail as I always do. Buyer has left feedback also saying he has received the item and is happy.
Yet Paypal inform me the funds have been recalled and are now being held, "pending" resolution.

I'm fully aware the seller protection policy only applies if items are mailed with a tracking number. But surely if the buyer has the item how can the funds then be reclaimed ?

I don't think this is a con on the part of the buyer but I'm still at a loss as to understand why it has happened and what excatly can be done to resolve the issue. Of course I have written to the buyer asking for an explanation but nothing heard back as yet.

Any thoughts or comments ?

jaywild, how about this?

"late fee stamp - issued to show payment of a fee to allow inclusion of a letter or package in the outgoing dispatch although it has been turned in after the cut-off time"

It was used to "explain" why there was a delay in deliver, OR as an extra charge for the extra effort to get the item into the day's mail.

The only place I know that issued a Late Fee stamp was Victoria, Australia, in 1855.
Everything else appears to have been hand stamped instead.
And I wasn't aware that it was done in the US, but for an item mailed from the mainland to Hawaii it makes sense.

Secondly, the scan you provided is way too big. How are we supposed to tell anything with such a gigantic scan? This would have been much better.

☺

Seriously, none of those stamps are the rarer colors, which are pink, rose-pink and pigeon-blood pink. If they are truly different catalog numbers then they have grills of various sizes on them. If you link to a 450 dpi scan of the back of individual stamps I may be able to tell you what grill is present.

Sorry Jim, we already have fire ants. They arrived on the east side of the island and proceeded to march uphill until arriving at Kilauea Crater. There they prayed to Pele, then retreated to the beaches where they saw surfers. To this day they surf their days away leaving people alone. Occasionally hears them chanting their song, "it's a firin' today, it's a firin' today".
This is used in sentences such as:
"Chest-high sets wit no one in da lineup, bro," he'd told us. "Big swells if you git it when it's firin' from da west."

Just thought you'd like to know.

My only advice is for you to respond to those emails and get on as many "winners" lists as possible, you just never know when a real one will come into your email box. Then you will have the last laugh on those of us who keep forwarding them to "spoof@ebay.com', or "spoof@paypal.com."

Got a nice collection today from an old timer who quit about ten years ago. A france album plus his flora and fauna topicals. There are a lot cheap of birds and fishes stamps out there but when these serious old characters go for completion they also have all the high values! Really nice when before 1960. Good price too. After a collector reaches 70 I am of the opinion that inflation is a concept that they no longer understand. Old timers remember that they paid $10 for a stamp and thats the end of that.Don't try to offer less, and why would I?

I guess everyone must be on vacation today as only 10 posts where made in the last 24 hours.
My youngest son is away at camp where he is working as a counselor in training (CIT). So I am without my soaking and catalog lookup partner.
Last Saturday/Sunday I was able to sort and put into stocksheets a small plastic box of US used stamps which my son had soaked a few months ago.
Next task is to see which ones are singles, put them into my national album and the doubles make up packets of 100 for trading with collectors all over the world.
Its amazing how much fun one can have from the stamps they get in the mail.

NOIP… I’m just speechless…

Over the past 24 I have—

◠Won the English Lottery (£1 million)
â— Won a Peugeot
â— Won the Microsoft Lottery
â— Been named next-of-kin to someone who died intestate on 9/11 leaving $32 million unclaimed
â— Been named beneficiary of the estate of a Nigerian strongman ($26 million)
â— Been invited to split $840,000 in unclaimed funds with a bank manager in Benin, left by an American oil executive who disappeared

What have I done to be so fortunate? I’m so happy I can hardly compose this post for the tears welling up in my eyes…

Because you have all been such good friends, I feel it is only right to share my good fortune with all of you. Therefore I will give each and every one of you your very own five minute ride in my Peugeot when it gets here. You will have to provide your own air fare to Los Angeles of course, and hotel accommodations while you are here will be on your own dime. I mean, that’s only fair, doncha think??

peetah - I looked at your scan of the Newf 3d green and am confident you have it correctly identified. It is amazing to me what they now catalog for and sell at, I remember buying one in the early 1970s for under $5 and I had dozens to choose from from one stock book. There were lots of reaminders of these following decimilazation, and they were a drug on the market almost forever. Seems that has changed.

IO,

I knew that you knew where Perim was but I doubt many Aden collectors would find it without mentioning Aden in the title. The demand from Aden collectors for that item would be much higher than for Egyptian collectors.

I know where Perim is.
I normally don't collect covers.
And there are two of them with nearly identical descriptions.
Give Chris an email explaining both his geographical and missing word faux pas on the part of the auction lister.

Er (b)Bjorn, as much as what you write has great appeal, my wife of 24 years might get a little peturbed. (Though I'll bear it in mind). :-)

IO,

forget the lister's geographical faux pas, more importantly he has made a much more drastic commonesense one. He has neglected to include the word ADEN in his description and also hasn't shown the reverse if the cover which is the most other important aspect as Perim markings are scarce and if it is very clear then it would be coveted by 100's of Aden Postal History collectors. I can't understand why some listers are too lazy to scan the back of covers.

It is a very scarce item and Perim censor markings are as scarce as hen's teeth,

ALOHA -
Point of interest.
The British and many other 19th century navies had coaling stations all around the world. Colliers transported the coal, mostly from GB, to these locations, where it was stored on isolated islands that had deep water ports. The Navy refueled its ships. Britannia, waves etc, etc.

ESC917: Letters should always be kept in their envelope. Many Civil War era letters ,for example, may be more valuable because of their War content than the envelope that housed them.

I have a question about covers. Are they more valuable with the letters inside them, or should the correspondence be taken out first? Most are from the late 1800s and early 1900s although some date to the fifties. I found several in my seemingly never ending supply of the family stamp collection.

peetah: I doubt there is a specific market for such awards, but there are probably people who collect Volkswagon ephemera and related materials. Primary interest will still be as a watch, particularly if it's a good manufacturer...though in many cases award watches are downgraded for inscriptions. There are exceptions - the US auto company Packard gave out Hamilton watches as service awards and those seem to be pretty popular.

Jeff: Ostensibly the reason they have the distorted six-figure code is to thwart automatic (computerized) spam being generated through the e-Bay response scheme. Computers have a much worse time identifying the digits than even you do. If you have problems because of the distortion or background (as I often do), you can have the computer speak the numbers (they come in different voices). If you're also partially deaf, then you're out of luck.

Rant

- if there is anything more pointless in the Universe than having to enter the 6-digit security code when answering an ebay user's message I would like to know what it is.

And a follow-up question, why does eBay make reading the 6-digit test like a color blindness test with white scribbly numbers on a patterned background, then with white spots spattered on it? If they want the number used, then MAKE THE DAMM THING READABLE.

Or is there a vision test required for using ebay.

We saw AMAZING GRACE the story of William Wilberforce (philatelically, check Sierra Leone, 1933, SG168-180)
We both enjoyed the movie.

NOIP… A couple of October 5 items came in today, among them this well traveled item. (Here’s the back—eight different postmarks, among them one from October 5, 1911.)

I’m not sure this qualifies for my collection, however because of the way it is folded and labeled on the back I believe it was hand carried and served on the debtor.

Today I did attempt some butterfly photography so will try to link to a few. They are not philatelic, but perhaps more welcome than rants on world finance and economics?

Proofs update -- I went back to my last post, but as half of my hour is already gone, I may not get to some posts in between before having to leave for today.

Thanks, Roger, for the link. I have set a snipe.

Thank you, Sheryll, for posting the items I sent to you long ago. The various proofs are some I have acquired in the last 2 decades or so. I believe the small one is a Roosevelt proof, very hard to find separate from the entire set. The plate proof block is a $30k item, surely one of the most desirable bridge items in all philately! It was in a Rumsey auction a few years back. If I were rich I would have bought it, but such are pipe dreams for my financial standing. I persuaded them to make a high-res scan at my request, much better than the one that was on their auction site, so if you like that picture, grab it now! (Sheryll's post at 7-29 01:01:02) My original is on a hard drive whose someday recovery is iffy, so I'll re-save it now. Only six plate proofs are known--these four in a block, and two others that were still a pair in 1980, but subsequently separated by some philatelic vandal!

I still haven't read most of last 24 hours, will have to catch up later.

Put up five items at $250,000 for an insertion fee of $24.00.

Not that it matters when you have a FB rating of zero and aren't going to pay the insertion fees.

If anyone is stupid enough to buy any of them, the numskull can pay eBay, pay off their student loan and retire for a few days while they think up the next scam.

As if, in 10 years, nearly however many hundred million ebay users haven't thought of something similar.

Duh!!!

dcderoo: I was shocked to see that it only costs $4.80 maximum insertion fee, for any items, over $500. This is a real bargain.

I was under the assumption, that it would cost a small fortune, to list something with starting price of $1 million. Of course, there would be a few $'s , in final value fees! Ted.

Both the buyers bidding on my postmarks are well known and can count up to 10.

D1 I don't know why you call this a 4R rating. It is a railway cancel not a postal cancel. The postal cancel of 75 is rated 4R and only known as a numeral within rays. Post Office unknown. It has no bearing on the cancel you are showing which is a Dalveen railway cancel which is not uncommon....BTW you are still showing the misrepresented 592 which now has a bid from an unsuspecting buyer.
