wrd,

re. " Why would there be both a pen cancel and a CDS "

very simple, the pen cancel is genuine fiscal usage whilst the cds. is completely fake.

How much is it worth, whatever a collector would pay for a spacefiller,

well there you go! See Paul, ~ all you have to do is post a scan of any stamps you cannot identify yourself, and a knowlegable philatelist, with the correct catalogue or reference book will identify them for you.

Hope you enjoyed the brats!.

I'm helping a neighbor who has inherited some stamps and wants to sell what he's not interested in. I have questions on 4 items:

1. This 5 shilling stamp from Trinidad. Why would there be both a pen cancel and a CDS? Any particular value for this stamp?

2. Is there any value in covers from Lithuania from 1989-1991 (including some registered letters)? Best to just sell as a lot (perhaps 50 covers)?

3. Is there any value in covers from China from the late 1980's (including some registered letters)? Best to sell as a single lot (perhaps 10 covers)?

4. Was the roadrunner/coyote pane issued both with the rightmost stamp with die cuts and with the rightmost stamp imperforate? My most recent catalog doesn't have this issue, which is from 2000. I believe the bugs bunny pane with the rightmost stamp imperforate has a reasonably significant CV, but don't know about the roadrunner/coyote issue.

Thank you in advance,
Bill D.

Peter C… It’s similar to a couple styles pictured in Scott, but chances are it’s not a patent cancel which cut into the paper. Almost all of those had a central dot or oval where the abrasion took place.

D2… The sharp-eyed eBay stamp buyers have become much more numerous than they were even 2-3 years ago. Then it was relatively easy to swoop on misdescribed lots. Back then I fought it out with only 4 other buyers at most, half the time no one but me spotted the gem. Now there’s a crowd running after the undiscovered goodies, so much so I have largely given up looking for them. They’re still out there on eBay, but too many hyenas gather at the first whiff of carcass.

Jay,

" not even enough to know which end is up "

but I know he was delighted when it " ended up ".

That's the good thing about Ebay, happy seller and I think an even more happier buyer seeing a dealers buying price.

I have often seen the unoverprinted stamp for sale but I can't remember ever seeing the overprint offered, it must be extremely rare and also proves that there are many out there watching the lots that have poor descriptions,

D2… The “10 K” overprint is very hard to read, in fact I didn’t notice it at all until I enlarged the scan and increased the contrast. Presumably in real life it is more noticeable, but even with that weak, blurry, upside-down scan there were eagle eyes who were able to figure out what it is. The fact that the seller started it out at $1.99 suggests he didn’t have a clue what the stamp is, not even enough to know which end is up…

Jay, it is definitely the 10 on 20. There must be a mistake in the buying list as the original issue was only one stamp.

I was thinking about Paul's comment about the design and remembered that the ordinary Russian postage stamps were redesigned in 1889 with the addition of thunderbolts to the posthorns to symolise the amalgamation of the Postal & Telegraph services. That is why the design shows the Telegraph crest not the imperial arms or post office,

I have to admit I made a mistake with my comment on the Russian Telegraph stamp, unlike some others I do admit when I make mistakes. I mentioned that the scan was inverted and reversed whilst it is only inverted. I am sorry for any problems that may have occurred because of my inattention to the facts when I made my comment as I had been out all day and it was very late at night and I was tired. I didn't have a profitable day, I just kept spending and spending.

My wife's niece is coming here for a month from Jakarta on Wednesday and we are going for a break to the Victorian Alps for 4 days (more spending).

SEE WE GOT A SMART A$$ IN THE CROWD ------Here is my point of view on that Russian telegraph stamp .First it doesn't have the Imperial Eagle which would mean its from the government .It has what looks like a private crest or a company crest on it .So that needs a explation .

Second Russian stamps didn't spell out Kopeck they have KON on them but

BUT some stamps from the Far Eastern Republic spell out the word KOPECK on them ,just like the scanned stamp.....gee it was 5:00 am in the morning and was going out the door and gave my guess on what it was ....but smart a$$ had to wait for his master to announce what it was before he barked .........goes to prove im dealing with catalog queens .....Paul,who had a good and profitable day....

NOIP… A couple things about the Russian telegraph stamp, a slightly enhanced version of which is here. There’s a diagonal crease through it, and also what looks like “10 K” overprinted across both “20”s. I am guessing that means the stamp has been revalued downward, from 20 to 10 kopeks. Although the ink of the “10 K” seems light it obliterates the design at both right and left (blue arrows).

Claghorn, it is the 1st. Telegraph issue of Russia, haven't got a catalogue on hand which shows the date but it is about 1870. For DJS

Did not see any used Scott specialty pages at Metroplex.
One seller had some old Scott albums, I think whole world, in brown binders for $220.

No one was specifically selling Israel.
Ron Ritzer had some Israel albums for sale but seeing as there are no volcanoes in Israel (it does have a volcani Institute which keeps popping up in my searches), I have no idea as to the worth of the stamps.

Actually, while I was at his table someone bought about $2,000 of Hawaii, Portugese Colonies and other on stock cards.

I think the dealers did most of the buying and selling of albums amongst themselves on Friday though there seemed to be a number of collectors trying to sell off their albums to dealers and were not getting sufficiently high prices.

All, in all, quite well-attended for a NY show in the middle of summer.

I was somewhat bemused by the hotel parking which read

Parking all Day
$6.95
for 1/2 hour

To elaborate on Roger’s answer, US postage stamps printed since the 1920s have been hoarded in vast quantities by people who thought that they would be valuable someday. But since so many were saved, there is virtually no market for them, and people trying to get rid of them are forced to sell them in lots for 80 cents on the dollar. Your stamp falls smack into that category. There must be millions of unused ones still out there, so your best bet is to stick it on a letter with 37± additional postage as Roger suggests.

I've been under the impression for years that the broken-hat variety of the 2 cent Columbian issue (US Scott 232) was an either/or item.
Either the V-shaped notch was there or it wasn't.
I have a copy that I bought as a broken-hat variety but was questionable.

The July 16, 2007, Linn's Stamp News has changed my thinking.
I quote from page 62 of the referenced issue:

"On the broken-hat variety, the third figure from the right has a V-shaped notch at the top right of his hat that was caused by a transfer roll break.

The deterioration was progressive and there are several different phases of the variety."

So now it appears I may have one of those intermediate stages.

Broken-hat variety comparison.

vinny NO, ebay don't 'invite' you to be a Powerseller, they inform you when you have reached powerseller status, and if you check the SITE MAP I think you will find the 'bottom line' is sales of over $1,000 a month for 3 straight months, a feedback score of over 99% etc...
As your sales for the last 30 days only total a couple of hundred dollars, there is no way you would have made POWERSELLER, so any such email would be bogus (hope you didn't click any links in it!)
Also, what wrd Bill says is true, if its not in My Messages, its not from ebay.

J-wild - re (Yessiree, stick this and a 41± stamp on a letter and it will get where it’s going. )au contraire, that would render it non-machinable and require an additional 17 cents.

That seller had a few patches mislisted. I emailed him about one and received a polite response that he would change category. Guess seller didn't think to check his other listings.

Re your latest below, some folks must live in peculiar environments (under a rock)

Roger as a former APS president and AAPE President told me about an obscure exhibit subject of mine "Publish. Publish. Publish." And now as you know the web makes it easier. I have been amazed at the exhibits I have judged that are somewhere online. Unfortunately for postmark exhibitors there exists (from my experience) an unfortunate prejudice against high levels for pmk exhibits. Part of that lies I believe in the proponderance of them that are just poor postmark exhibits. Yours on the other hand is a delight and I would love to see it in the frames.

The AAPE has, I believe, a critique service by which a photocopy of your exhibit is passed on to one or more judges who are familiar with such an exhibit, or at least the type of exhibit. Their remarks would likely be more in the area of continuity of the story line and weaknesses in balance, but could prove useful.

Nitey-night all, now that it is the 14th I can come out and play.

Io, their biggest sale is during the annual Woodstock Library Fair, which is maybe the biggest annual event of the village. This year's fair is two weeks from tomorrow.
But they have a couple of sales a month until into Fall. They possess a barn, see, and all the area libraries give all of their book donations to Woodstock, as none of the others have any storage capacity at all beyond their little stacks. So the barn is always packed with boxes of books; and one finds all kinds of surprising things there, but it's never what you are looking for!

And you have fun at the Metroplex. Here's hoping you add new volcanic issues to your exhibit!

Hi All! Just dropping in to compliment Matt on his recent Linn's article. Very interesting news event that big Gross auction benefit. Goes to show there are a few real philanthropists still around, too!

I will unfortunately not be able to attend the show in Nuevo York this weekend. I will be in Woodstock and hope to get there in time to hit the Woodstock Library Sale and score some sci-fi/fantasy works I haven't yet read.

Antonius-Ra, enjoyed your stories. I actually met Kris K briefly in '92 or '93, was security on him at a Left Coast Bay Area benefit event at which he performed. Apparently his granddad(I think it was?) was in my same union (Typographical) back in the day.

Did anyone else here receive one of the random APS surveys in the mail? I was surprised to get it, as I am not a member, but I participated anyway.

I'll make every effort to speak with someone in Portland. I could also show them my exhibit which would give them a complete understanding of what I've been trying to accomplish. Now it's off to work and get those passengers safely to Maui, or Honolulu, or Kauai, or whatevers.

the rules regarding the Swiss competition appear to be for national exhibiting, for exhibiting in FIP International Exhibitions the award would have been recognised,

Thanks for your input. Yes, my exhibit has received three National level Vermeils but it seems I'm still stymied by the Swiss rule of 60 pages (5 12 page frames) to first exhibit there. The purpose last year of reducing my exhibit for Westpex to 64 pages was to see if I oculd do it. I had to severely limit the time covered and examples shown. To me a lot was left out for brevity.

This year I took everything from last year (64 pages) and added everything I felt necessary to tell the complete story. I ended with 138 pages. So that meant I needed to cut 10 pages. Some went easily, other items were combined onto pages, and other individual items put back into my stock book. I'm at the point where I believe the story is told with interesting examples from each period. (For example destinations of outgoing mail or incoming origins represent over 35 different countries.)

Once I have this years scans all done, and have time after mid-August, I'll be replacing my previous online exhibits with the new.

David B -
It's my understanding that winning US National awards doesn't effect Swiss exhibiting. The last few years there has been a team competition at Swiss shows. An American team led by Harlan Stone had to start at the bottom and work its way up over a three year period. He won the US Champion of Champions with his Sitting Helvetia, but no matter, he had to start at the entry level for that competition. I'm not sure what or where my Vermeils are considered "entry level" in the international scene. All shows I participated in were World Series shows -Westpex, ROMPEX, New York Mega Event. This Year Stampshow 2007. I'll fond out and ask questions at Stampshow.

Alec,

thanks for your comments,

A lot of countries have the old 12 sheet frames and as it costs a lot of money to construct new ones it will take time for all countries to use frames with the same layout and number of sheets.

I presume the qualifications would be for entries not entrants which is the same as we have here in Australia.

Roger Have you ever considered contacting the Swiss study Groups and possibly having your subject put into print in the form of some sort of Monograph ? Perhaps there is such a group in the US ?
Here in the UK the Germany & Colonies PS encourages members to do such things and already we have had several very intersting monographs published on very specialized areas that do require a lot of text and explanations, as well as illustrations of course. The latest one is hot off the press and covers German East Africa during World War I. I mention it because I know several here are interested in the Colonies. I know the author a Mr Mike Farrant and should anyone wish to know more about this particular monograph please get in touch and I can endevour to find out costs etc.
Not sure if my last comment constitutes business and breaks ebay rules. If it does then I apologize in advance.

German Exhibiting

Firstly welcome Andreas to the ebay.com Stamp Board. I should mention that I know Andy personaly. That aside speaking as one who has and does exhibit in Germany I can perhaps explain some of the so called "rules".
I'm no expert and should any point I raise be wrong then hopefully Rainer will be able to correct me.
Firstly the German and many other European countries have a rigid level of entry for competitions. There being three National levels, known as Rangs (levels) 1, 2 & 3. The latter being the starting point for everyone. No matter what they wish to exhibit.

I must state that I am not sure if for example exhibitor "A" achieves enough points to enter Rang 1 with exhibit "Z" he can then enter other exhibits straight in at the same level.Or wether he/she has to start each exhibit at the lowest level.

Once the exhibit has achieved a certain level of points at each stage the exhibitor can then step up to the next level. Now this system works very well because it allows the collector to develop his collection. Something which I don't believe exists in the USA. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe anyone can enter a US National competition even with a first time entry. Is it no wonder then that some who do go down that road & achieve a poor award never exhibit again .

Yes the German system does have different rules to what I would call the English speaking community. But basically they are very much the same as everywhere else. Yes the preference from German National judges is for uniformity so to speak. As David B rightly stated the ,"Christmas tree" effect is a tradition and not a rule cast in stone. The text as everywhere should really only explain what the item is and explain anything not having an obvious meaning. Such as markings etc.

One drawback to the German National system is that they still use 12 sheet frames for their National exhibitions whereas most now use 16 sheet Frames.Though there is talk of that changing so that everyone worldwide will eventually accept and use the 16 sheets per frame.

German National competition also places a great deal of importance on the exhibit having a frame layout plan explaining how the exhibit is laid out. This is often in addition to the main title page. Judges then expect to see this followed very rigidly. In my opinion too much so but that is not an issue really.

I'm sure Roger's exhibit would be well received in Switzerland. Though how he goes about exhibiting there is another matter. One way of course is for his exhibit to achieve a US national level of Vermeil or greater which would qualify it to be shown at International level anywhere in the world.

Roger, there is nothing wrong with having a lot of text if the material needs it but what judges don't like is a lot of text where the material is self explanatory.

If I was you I would double check those " rules " as they appear to be wrong although I tend to agree that the Xmas Tree approach is a good idea although it may tend to make it awkward to collectors who want to display material in exact order.

The first presentation suggestion I received from many exhibitors, both US and international, was to avoid the look of railway tracks across the multiple frames of the exhibit. My visual breakup makes it more interesting to view. About the text - that has received criticism at a critique, but I believe the judges already had learned something about the significance of items in my exhibit via the synopsis. The public viewer is supposed to let the covers and cards tell the story. Well, in my opinion they have nothing to go on, if they aren't told the story. A lot of covers don't tell a story by themselves, explanations are necessary. I've discovered many of the exhibiting rules seem to be developed for subjects that have been exhibited previously over many years. They don't take into consideration that the viewer and the judges have no previous information to exhibit in front of them.

I know about German "rules", they are for everything in life. )' >)
It doesn't surprise me that one must layout an exhibition according to "rules" in Germany that have no relationship to the material being presented. My problem is that I'm laying out all my examples according to date, not cover size, and I'm afraid they don't always come according to size sequence approved by German judges. );>)
I have exhibited three times (once a year for the past three years with different versions) and won the Award of Honor each time by the American Association Philatelic of Philatelic Exhibitors for my presentation. It is unlikely I'll be changing my style to conform to other's rigid presentation rules.

My only regret is that is seems impossible to exhibit in Switzerland as that country has page limitations on exhibits for "beginners", which is the category I fit into. Maybe sometime in the future I'll be able to exhibit there on some sort of non-competative waiver. Otherwise Swiss will only be able to see my exhibit on the internet.
http://www.japhila.cz/hof/0088/index0088a.htm
As you can see here it has been viewed quite often, so maybe there are some European exhibitors who are getting ideas on how best to dispay their collections by not following rigid rules. );>)

Thanks for looking, and for your comments.

@roger, did You show Your collection on an exhibition? For a German exhibition we must look that
1) there is not too much text on a page;
2) the covers must be in the middle of the page - horizontal;
3) if the covers has not the same size, the smaller one must be on top and the bigger on the bottom (must look like a christmas tree).
So it's better for You, never show this collection in Germany

A type of Swiss cancel developed by an engineer. The design included rotating date wheels obsoleting the number slugs, and also had a swivel head that allowed the clerks to always make clear impressions. They were tested over a 5 year period between 1898 and 1903. There were a number of other related designs and precursers. The design was adopted by the Swiss PO in 1903 and used with littl echange until 1964. There are a couple of existing razor cancelers in the Swiss PTT Museum in Bern.

The "razor" name came from the razor like look of the date bridge. See link below.

Roger: What is a razor cancel?
Posted by malolo   ( 846 ) on Jul-13-07 at 10:25:46 PDT   Listings
Aloha Paolo -

When identifying razor cancels use this exhibit. This was the first incarnation where I divided the examples by city, giving the characteristics of the cancels.
http://www.ilhawaii.net/~rheath/razorexhibit/frame1.html

I now use a time-line to show the development and progression of the razor test. Once I complete the pages, I'll be scanning them before going to Portland.

Here is my newest addition to the exhibit. A Ste Croix from 1897. On the page it will be identified as one of three known examples prior to 1899.

On another note I found this on the back of a card listed in a sellers store on eBay.

It looks very similar to this style known to determine if the deCoppet design could be mass produced.

I don't recall ever seeing an example of the Zurich design, so I emailed my contact in Switzerland and asked about it. Here's his reply.

"Zurich 1 BrieftrÀger III ( dated 14.II.05.X-) is one I found the other day in a box, and thought that must be looked into, and now you raise a question, on the same problem! It does look so different.

According to GĂŒller (Vol 4 with the de Coppet cancels) there are 5 cancels shown on page 1 with only 7 bars top and bottom, from about August 1903.
All others of this period have 8 or more bars, as far as I have looked.

Could it be a small series to try it out, perhaps there is a letter still hidden away somewhere. The places are: Cham, Zurich 1, Bern Weisensbuhl, St.Gallen Brieftrager, Ambulant No. 15. (A example from ) Cham I have somewhere."

So the challenge continues.

Ken, very nice picture!

RE-France, 1 cent. Type 'Sage' black on prussian blue.
Here is offered one example...
Whoever might be interested in purchasing it, should ask to the seller if the postage stamp is certified by a French expert as 'prussian blue'. If not, should ask for an expertise extension: I'd recommend J.F. Brun (A.I.E.P.).

Roger,
Found some really interesting items in the lot I purchased last Friday; I will show you one this evening regarding the UPU 1900 issue (retouch and plate fault on the 5c. plate II) , because it bears a BASEL Razor cancel of 1900...
Then, an unusual cancelllation on the 1 frank 'Helvetia with Sword... unusual because it's the first time I see that cancel. Similar to a 'vingerhut' (small diameter cancel) but of a large P.O. (Lausanne, I think to remember).
I have to peruse your website to identify some types of Razors.

Anne I saw your message about your trip and it reminded me of my own visit to Split 55 years ago... we were the first American ship to visit Yugoslavia after WW2. I remember cashing in $10 for drachma, but when we got ashore, there was nothing but one bar (drinks 10c, meal 75c) and a military museum (entry fee: 10c).

Marshall Tito toured our ship, the carrier Coral Sea, and as the photographer on duty at the time, I took copious photos, one of which is here.

The excessive heat yesterday (101°F in Manzanita, OR on the coast) 'helped' the radio to burn out. We were able to get it replaced this morning and things seems pretty stable again. We're in the process of changing to a different type of radio for that feed, which will more than double the throughput to 20M/sec.

I agree with you about Lyndon Johnson. Vastly misunderstood and underrated. If it weren’t for Johnson we would have had no civil rights legislation in the 1960s. Kennedy stalled on civil rights issues because he thought that supporting them would cost him the Old South Democrats in 1964—Johnson plowed ahead regardless, and used his formidable powers of personality to see to it that not only the legislation passed but the Democratic coalition remained intact.

These days the name “Lyndon Johnson” conjures up only Vietnam, and that was the great iron ball around his ankles. Our involvement was unavoidable, happening when it did. If Johnson had pulled all our troops out and let South Vietnam sink or swim on its own in 1964, it would have sunk in a matter of months and Johnson would have been excoriated down through history. His civil rights agenda would never have gotten past the dreaming stage, and he probably also would have been impeached. (Look how little it took to get Clinton in the dock.) The trap Johnson was in was the most intricately laid, and yet utterly inescapable, of any president, even Lincoln. Nixon’s story, his crookedness and insecurity, his rise and fall, was fascinating, while living through Johnson’s was like watching the Fall of the Roman Empire.

I hate to disagree,

being a forigner and all that,

but I think Lyndon was one of the best presidents that the US has had in the last 50 years.
At least, one of the most underrated.

But I shouldn't get into politics and should stick with rocks and stamps.

Yep, there is html code that you can use to resize the image though, judging by my earlier attempt, this board does not support it.
Easier to go with the two images.
Posted by dcderoo   ( 1670 ) on Jul-11-07 at 11:39:38 PDT   Listings
Yes, I did it with two separate images.
I'd have to think about it some to see if it could be done with one image.
If it could be done I guess there would have to some sort of HTML code that does resizing.
Posted by peetah   ( 493 ) on Jul-11-07 at 10:11:18 PDT   Listings
dcderoo Hmmm, I see by the properties of the thumbnail you named it 122-25 and the enlarged image you linked the thumbnail to is named simply 122.
Does this mean you did in fact save a small pic named 122-25 and an enlarged pic named 122?
That would be consistent with what jaywild (and what I speculated)wrote.
Posted by peetah   ( 493 ) on Jul-11-07 at 09:46:57 PDT   Listings
dcderoo I used your code and just tried doing a thumbnail and what I got was an actual size thumbnail, linked to an actual sized image.

The way jaywild suggests is the way I thought it had to be done. That is 2 images of same stamp one larger than the other.

So DChow did you do it with just one picture.....or did you?

Below is how I do a thumbnail ink—

It requires two images—a regular sized one and a small one (in this case 3 kb) for the thumbnail. The trick is to embed the “img src” string where the link word normally is.

Good, it worked.
The thumbnail is 9kb and the full image is 120kb.

Yes, that's my 122.
Pretty good color but centering a bit shaky.

DC i see Jim has posted an example. I have never done this myself so did some Google searching and came up with the following which I tested with success!!

Sites cautioned to use a graphics program to reduce the size of the thumbnail image. If not done the thumbnail image apparently retains the mb size of the original, thus slowing down the loading speed of the board.

Yahoo! Some days you have good days and some days you have bad days. Every once in a while you have great ones, this is one for me.
One of my best old friends (of 35+ years) called me today (the one who is the closest living relative to George Washington). He had come up to K.C. to buy a car for his oldest son Mitch (my name sake). The car he came to look at was a p.o.s. so he called to see if I had anything. I told him I only had one item for sale at present but it probably cost more than he would want to pay for his son. Anyways he also stated he needed a car for himself to do the commute between Springfield Mo and Branson Mo. So I told him he better come checkthis out.
He loved it he bought it and we were all happy. A sweet little ride that I was hoping would go to an older gentleman who would take care of it and not screw it up!
Just did not know it was destined to go to an old best friend.
By the bye, he told me some more great stories (as he has been a road manager for some of the great preformers of our times.
This one I had not heard before and I doubt few have. It seems Mr. John Cash had some hearing problems. Larry (my friend) who often did sound work for Johnny told him he should get a hearing aid. Well of course the immortal Johnny could not bring himself to believe such a thing. It seems that Mr Cash, shortly afterwards went through some hearing tests and the results were exactly as my buddy had told him and in the same frequencies! After that Mr. Cash thanked my friend and wore an aid till he passed. He had convinced Mr Cash that it would look like an "earwire" that most performers use these days.
We also talked about what incredible people Willie and Kris K. are but that story about Johnny was icing on the cake for this day.

Mitchell.........a very happy camper!!!!!!!!!!!!

abt1950...Anne, isn't Dubrovnik a truly wonderful place? One of history's jewels. I had the good fortune to visit there back in 1993(?) with a colleague from Zagreb. The good part of visiting then was that it was not very crowded; the bad part was the Serbs bombing the airport (which is a few miles from the city) while we were there. We flew in from Zagreb, because Knin was still occupied, so there was no rail connection, but after the artillery barrage, we decided to take the bus up the coast to Split before flying back to Zagreb (passing numerous Croatian military encampments on the way. This was just before the last big Croat push that led up to the Dayton Accords). Even then, most of the damage to Dubrovnik was already repaired. I loved the beautiful Venetian harbor and the city made entirely of marble. There seemed to be a lot more Roman influence visible up the coast at Split. The local Dalmation cherries, which were in season, were also delicious! I am glad you had the chance to see it, and I urge anyone else so inclined to visit there some time.

D1,

not really, the exhibition was over subscribed and as they have to allow certain applications automatic entries the organising committee picked which entries they wanted and of course they picked the better ones as well as much in the National Class that could be allowed. It looks like they picked the creme de la creme of Revenues.

Arthur told me that the Gross collection of USA was a no shower as his insurance company wouldn't take the risk of sending it to Russia no matter what the insurance premium would have been.

Afternoonevening/morning from a hot and threatening NJ. At least I think this is NJ. As for the time of day, I'm really not sure.

We got back last night from our trip to the Dalmatian Coast. Very, very beutiful. We were on a tour sponsored by the Aracheological Institute of America and The Explorers Cubl. We spent a couple of days in Dubrovnik, which has been almost totally restored after the war in the 1990s, and then cruised the coast in a private boat. Aside from places like Hvar and Split in Croatia, we also saw Kotor in Montenegro and Mostar in Bosnia. It was a totally amazing trip. Lots of diverse cultural influences from the early Illyrians, the Greeks, and the Romans, to the Venetians, the Ottoman Turks, and later the Autro-Hungarians.

In terms of philatelic acquisitions, I am now the proud possessor of what looks to be a definitive book on Montenegran postal history, which I currently cannot read, plus a couple of cheap Yugoslav first day covers.

We also spent an overnight layover in Dublin on the way back. We had a couple of free hours in the morning before our flight out and managed to see the Book of Kells in the Trinity College library. Also truly amazing.

Now its back to the world of everyday drudgery, doing laundry, dishes, and general house-mucking.

So--anything interesting going on here?

Anne

Mount Gamkonora's alert was raised to the highest level, meaning a major eruption could occur within days or weeks, said Saut Simatupang, who is monitoring activities of the volcano on Halmahera island.

Seismic activity at the 5,364-foot mountain increased sharply Monday and two major eruptions were recorded early Tuesday, shooting debris 9,842-feet into the air, he said.

There have been no reports of damage or casualties, Simatupang said, with some 8,400 villagers evacuated to safer areas in the last 24 hours and northward winds blowing smoke away from residential areas.

Halmahera, the main island in North Maluku province, is about 1,500 miles northeast of Jakarta.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for the publicity!

For Jim, and anyone else interested, the article is about my 'Canals, Dams & Locks' thematic collection. Over the years, some board readers have contribted items, for which I remain grateful.

I actually answered the Stamp Magazine questionnaire over three years ago, and thought that it had been forgotten about, until a short while ago when I was contacted again.

I made a few updates, and corrected a couple of errors of fact (which didn't get altered in the published article), and am very pleased with the result.

I wonder if any board readers collect a similar theme?

Martin.

Dave, glad to hear you finished and in record time. I understand the part about the lack of brevity. You could always cull some of it out, and get someone interested in printing a huge tome. But, it would be a shame to cut any good information. Either way, just being finished is a great accomplishment. Let me know when it is available.

Paul, also nice to hear from you. I have not given up on the board, just have been working so many hours. Today we met a potential new partner. One of my partners has been sick lately, so it has been too many hours every day for months. That may change soon... Glad to see your daughter is back. My son decided for Vanderbilt instead of Northwestern. I am somewhat disappointed since I like Chicago, but Nashville is a great city also. He'll start in journalism and then we will see.

Glad to see the board still is afloat...

ukdyv WElcome to the ebay Stamp Chat. I'm afraid I too deleted your email without even clicking on a link as that is the scammers favourite form of invasion, via an unsolicited email. Maybe you should have introduced yourself via a posting here before emailing. If you are really interested in stamps, this board is the one for you, particularly in the cooler Nth.Hemisphere months. This week has been a slow one on the board, probably due to the USA weather and holiday.

In a month here you would learn a terrific lot about US and world wide stamps. A couple of our collectors here have HUGE world collections, and there are also many specialists in various and varied fields of collecting. All chatters here are willing and able to assist with identification or opinions or translations from foreign languages.

The ebay Users' Stamp Club has a meeting here once a month, right on this board, but you dont need to be a member to post messages here.
So, instead of just looking in and personally emailing each poster, why not jump in and tell us more about your collection, ask a few questions etc.
Oh, and we like to see pics of stamps as LINKS, not as postings (details of how, and loads more in the links in the BIG YELLOW BOX)

Welcome to the Board,
Linda

if anyone could use a used set of Scotts 1999, a 2002 US specialized and a bound US 1945 will send them to you for the cost of the postage. I am downsizing and don't have room. e-mail me if interested - I will have to box them up and get postage cost. Won't be cheap.

Rob Thanks for the invite also but to be perfectly honest I'm already active in far too many stamp boards, study groups and chat rooms worldwide. So I shall repectfully decline your offer.

Ebay groups appear to be down. Bad timing on the invites I guess, the groups worked when I invited because I had to do the invites from within the group. Hopefully they'll be up soon.

Well, I haven't posted here before for a couple of reasons.

1. 10 years ago I wasn't actively working on my stamp collection. I collected in middle school and a bit in high
school and then my collection sat idle for many, many years. Then my wife told me I needed to get a hobby so I resurrected it.

2. I didn't know this was here. I had messed around in the groups but not in Chat.

Jeff I also recieved one. The page that the link goes to is unavailable?

ukdyv This chat board has been here for 10 years, or so. Why have you not posted here before? Anyways welcome.

I buy stamps every now and then. The last couple of purchases were made outside of ebay. I collect US and worldwide, whatever strikes my fancy at the time. I'm working on IDing and getting my stamps in albums right now so not much is being spent on new acquisitions. I've completed about 4,500 out of 40,000 stamps so far. As far as selling, my kids get first dibs on my duplicates (got 3 of them somewhat interested in stamps). After that I plan on putting my duplicates in packets to give out on career-day at my kid's elementary school. Young blood seems to be lacking in this hobby. I thought of selling some FDCs and ship covers that I got in a bulk lot but decided to keep them.

Thanks for the clarification. There are so many fraudulent mails coming in these days. I am cautious about clicking links to join things I don't know about. Especially when eBay groups are all down today for some kind of makeover.

I have looked at your feedbacks, you don't seem to be very active in buying or selling stamps. What are your specific stamp interests?

That was me. I don't want your identity. Just inviting you to an ebay group. It is a pretty new group but very active. It has both sellers and buyers of stamps, veterans and new collectors.

I received the following e-mail which I believe to be a new attempt at ID theft, there was nothing in my official eBay mail at My eBay. The time 14:55 if eBay CA time just came from the future as it is only 12:12 there. BUT NOW I SEE THERE IS A UKDYV POSTING HERE??

220man, the stamps in the image appear to be very common issues.

Hi Phil,
The html of your links is correct, but it looks like you didn't upload your image to a server.
It's never going to work if you don't upload it to a server; I would recommend using www.tinypic.com.

Paula from England,
Many thanks for your kind message. I will reply ASAP (I am backwards on everything).

All the best,
Paolo

If you can’t get people to notice your stuff here just list it again and again, such as here and here.

My wife found these in the pages of a poetry book. I assume someone may have been drying soakers. Common stamps, or should I check further? Here

3 posts in thirteen hours! Is that a record? I looked around at a couple other ebay chat boards and many seem to be even less active than ours. Wonder what that might mean?
