eBay chatboard archive: Apr-23-07 to Apr-29-07 week

Had only a few hours to visit WESTPEX but made the most of them. Really needed the philatelic break after a nasty week. I'll be showing some of my finds over the next few days. Very tired tonight, so I'll show a single item, one that will be of interest to the expo mavens.

Here is a message reply card from German Offices in Morocco, sent from Tangier on Oct. 13, 1900 to Germany. What does this have to do with expo material?

Take a look at the reply half of the card, which was mailed from the US Postal Station at the Paris Exposition back to Germany on Oct. 25, 1900. While this is obviously a philatelically inspired item, it is quite nice. Also, this usage of the reply card should have been charged postage due. As of 6-15-97, UPU rules required attached reply cards to be mailed from the country to which the message half of the card was addressed. Mailing from a different country required the reply card to be treated as an unpaid posta card and charged postage due. Obviously that did not happen here. Have some more really nice reply card material that I'll show later in the week.

5.

6.

These each come in both the small thumbnail version shown, but a full sized version that's about 500 pixels wide. There were a couple of different versions posted that had only the small image, so I wasn't able to capture them as a possible replacement for the web page.

IO, the main value would be in the mint blocks as there is a huge premium for them.

You can always ask the seller for scans.

I doubt it will sell, no one with that sort of money would be stupid enough to buy it,

Are there any OI's in there?
If there are, I can't see them.
Most of that mess is, a mess.
Perhaps, as I see it about $5,000.
Though one wonders why individual items were not sold as singles or why the collection was not sold in a B-and-m house.

Perhaps with regards to the lawsuits.
However, I have, as yet, paid little heed to lawsuits when dubious listings appear on eBay.
Particularly when very similar listings appear to originate from the same source.

I also don't think misspelling the name of the seller or buyer under consideration would stand up in a court of law. The juries perception of whether a missing letter is of some or no import would be of far more significance. Now if there were a buyer/seller with the misspelt name, they would have greater cause for grievance.

Still incommunicado at home and the library often has lines too daunting, but found a slot today. Miss the board and hope to be back eventually. Although I may miss responses here, any comments welcome at my email (which unlike the board will wait until I check it) rclwa-AT-nwi-DOT-net. May be unable to reply, though. My computer will still start but then freezes, forcing a turn-off-the-power improper shutdown (for which I am chastized the next startup!) Even in Safe mode I can't get very far! It's an old 98 sys anyway, I really need to fix my newer XP rig, but there's always something else to do first!

I can show one of the rarest 7 Frankings to find in Germany's hyper-inflation period. The reverse shows the remaining stamps. Multiple frankings are not scarce in themselves but as a 7 during this period extremely so. I know of no other such franking to exist. That's not to say they don't because in theory they should be out there. Just not found yet.
That particular cover survived the Hurricane Katrina disaster. That is to say the seller came from New Orleans and although forced out of his home at the time the cover survived. I later found out by only a few inches of water.

Ed I think we are assuming that using the ebay logo with the word "users" is ok. The club was first named Ebay Stamp Club and ebay objected. Since adding the word "users"
they don't seem to have a problem.

I havn't saved every version of the logo. I think Bill was trying to do that. The following one might have been the one with the best responses, although it might be good to add the apostrophe.

I also very much liked the one Paolo showed but at first it just looks like the stamp as the wording is rather small. As some one else pointed out it would be good for a philatelic watch dog chapter.

Alec There is an old flyer on the EUSC home page.
Sheryll posted another one a few days ago but it has scrolled off. I saved it but can't seem to upload it to my site in it's present form. Anyway I think both are lacking in several ways and I plan to combine them soon to give a more complete message. For now you can just print out the one on the clubs webpage.

As far as the continent/country theme thing, I'm not touching it. I voiced some thoughts about how might too proceed with it and if it were to be a chat board project or one of the EUSC. Recieved no comments so I'm off the hook. Anyone can pick up any ball they want and run with it.

Anyone that wants to make a motion on something might do it today. Any voting can be carried through to 12:00 noon ebay time Monday the 30th.
At least I hope we can get the logo resolved!

I will be out of the office most of the day.

Excuse me for asking but should not someone be asking ebay for permission to use their logo in the stamp club logo and on private websites.

After all it is their registered trademark and I would have thought that they might want to protect it’s usage especially with an unauthorised group (unauthorised by them).

Maybe I am wrong but I always thought trademark/ copy write meant something.

Rainer If Anne does not have a copy of that article let me know and I'll ask my friend who works at the RPSL to see if they have it & perhaps she can make a photo-copy or even scan for you.

I'm still not sure which Eusc logo the club have agreed to use. Or is it something we have to vote on ?
I'd also appreciate it if someone could direct me towards the Eusc flyer download that can be printed off and handed out at shows. I forgot to save the one previously shown.

I'll be in Germany next week but hopefully will be back in time for a local auction next Sunday afternoon. So ideal place to "promote" the club, the board and the hobby.

Timed theme discussion I know there was some interest in Paul's idea and I did suggest that some of you US collectors arrange a day and time to start the discussion.
As yet I don't recall seeing anyone step forward to confirm a date or time. If anyone out there really would like to see a debate on any particular area or country then please do consider starting the theme yourself. No need to be shy and afraid that anything you say will be shot down in flames. For example the ABC showing was posted simply as an idea and others simply added to it. My point being that sometimes us collectors need a good old fashioned kick to get ourselves motivated into doing something. We see others do it and then think, "Hey, I can do that, or I have something interesting I could show."
Yes the board has a weekly theme running but that as I have said before doesn't exclude other matters being discussed. I don't profess to know who collects USA here and who doesn't but I'm sure if one of you took the bull by it's horns and started it off others will soon contribute to the talk. If not don't worry about it. You at least will have tried. Far better to have died trying than to have never tried at all.

thanks, calm down boys,

for some obscure reason Gibbons states Mt. Soemer which I had never heard of even though I have travelled around Eastern Java, wonder where they got that from. May as well contact the editor and ask him although possibly that was the name that it was called during the Japanese Occupation period when it was first listed and hasn't been updated since then. I checked with the boss and she said it was Gunung Semeru so I believe her as well as Scott's and you two. Gibbons still has a few stamps with the old Indonesian spelling such as Soerabaya & Djakarta, they should also be updated.

Lenard to the stamp board!
By and large most stamps printed within the last 60 years are worth very little. Some of the higher values might be worth while but generally they are not worth the listing fees or the time to run auctions with. You can take a pice of a bunch of them and reun an auctions starting at 99 cent sor so and see where they go. If people have a good enough idea what is in the lot, they will bid it up to what it is worth.

NOIP… I was very happy to receive this cover today, which turns out to be pretty scarce. It was sent 31 Dec 1968 from Cam Ranh Bay in Vietnam to Guernsey, the Channel Islands, Great Britain. Although it was sent using the APO military mail system, the sender, a contractor, was not covered by APO privileges, thus he had to pay the foreign airmail rate to Asia (25˘ per ˝ oz) as opposed to the rate to Europe (20˘ per ˝ oz). Anything mailed anywhere in the world using APO system for qualified persons is treated as if it were mailed in the US. This sender, being a contractor, used the system but did not qualify for the rates.

I had to call up Tony Wawrukiewicz to verify the rate!

Talking about Chinese from Medan, we have a friend who lives in Brisbane who asked my wife to check out a house he was interested in , the asking price was A$9 Million, he introduced my wife to the agent and the seller as his sister, next day he gave an offer of A$ 8 Million but was told the house had already been sold,

David B.,
Indeed and well spotted!
There was an "H" too much. His real name is like I wrote without the "H". (I have to camouflage these posts a bit).
They came from North Indonesia, his father was a fisherman (I knew him, an exquisite person, R.I.P.); I believe he is rather fluent with Chinese (me not).
Actually, I have had sentor that from bureaucratic Italy they want to invalidate my citizenship, due to taxes problems: in that case, with a rather sore arse, I would be citizen of the world.

P.S. he, Mr. Shoei from Indonesia, even though resident and Dutch citizen at all effects (I am PROUD not to be one, I am and will remain Italian at all effects!) was brought by me in my house today. We really had a nice chat about stamps, mostly in Dutch, a bit in English and some nasty exchanges in German (I know a little terminology in that idiom that's pretty petty direct -- I did so when he questioned some of my certificates.
He only collects top material of the world.
I noticed he screws up sometimes, just like me.
My wife was not at home, else -- sadly -- she wouldn't have allowed me to enter the house with him.

Roger and David B.,

Thank you for your words of advice (even if in CAPITAL letters ;-) ehehe) and comments!

Roger, in order to acquire this sheet, I sold to the same person who sold me the sheet those forged cantonal stamps of Switzerland I had mentioned about a month ago.
He was very happy with it, he valued it 1/3rd of the value as a discount on the Modena sheet.
Anyway, what would I have ever done with Cantonal forgeries?
... ehm, uhm...I hope they were really not genuine, though LOL!!!
I crossed checked with Serrane guide and a Zanaria auction catalogue with very large pictures of the Swiss cantonals;
I had concluded it were all forgeries (a couple of the N.1 and 2, strangely, recess printed!). Anyhow, it didn't correspond to any of the known types. Hope I didn't screw this one up! re-LOL!

All the best, Paolo

Roger & Paolo, many exhibitors show large pieces or sheets. There is even one exhibitor I know who shows 4 large items to fill in the frame which normally takes 16 album pages. The Modena block should only take 2 vertical sheets and would enthrall any viewer,

AN EASY METHOD OF STORING SHEETS THIS LARGE IS TO WET THE BACK OF HALF THE SHEET, FOLD NEATLY DOWN THE CENTER LINE, THEN FOLD ONCE AGAIN. FITS EASILY ON AN EXHIIBIT PAGE AND COMES OUT OF THE SLEEVE. ALL STAMPS ARE VISIBLE FOR QUICK VIEWING BY THE JUDGES! If you ever wish to return the sheet to Mint condition, just place in a freezer and work the sheet apart with tongs. This will save much of the original adhesive. In fact you might have enough glue left over to enhance other stamps that have been mistreated during their lives.

I was actually able to get my 250 stamp pane down small enough to fit on my scanner.

Always wanted to have someone tell me not to shout, turn of the caps lock, and stop being an idiot. LOL

Paolo Funny you should mention the weird gum on Lombardy-Venetia! I added a used 1862 3s just this week to my collection.
It still had gum on the back which I wanted to remove. I soaked it in warm water for nearly 4 hours and it did not release! I started to assume that someone had put some sort of glue on the back and gave up. After reading your post I'm now assuming it is just really tenacious gum. What's the trick in getting rid of it?

I am a little happy as today I did some real nice purchases, including a complete sheet of Modena 1852 (cheaper printing) : that is four panes of 60 stamps for a total of 240 stamps, complete of gutter intepanes (vertical and horizontal), sheet margins, and all of the constant plate flaws common to all denominations of the set!
Whoo0 F...ink Hooo! I wouldn't swap this for a mint block of four of the common 1840 1d black! ;-)

P.S. one of these days I will show the sheet; I must scan it in four (or more) times in order to show the whole surface by means of an image!

P.S. there are a few stamp Issues on which the gum on reverse is very few soluble in water. One example is the unsed (or used on original piece) postage stamps of the First Issue of Lombardy-Venetia (June 1850). In this case to untie the eventual two stamps which for some reason have adhered to each other would be way more difficult, especially if both stuck on gum side.

jbthree,

"Used stamps or unused stamps? " =>
"Both"
I had a similar proble several times.
For the used adhesive postage stamps it can be simple to just soak it in order to untie them, if the ink is not fugitive!
If I want to salvage the gum of the unused stamp stuck to another stamp, used in this case, I moist the used stamp by tampooning with a little piece of cotton dipped in water;
I wait about 5 to 10 minutes, I moist again and then I separate the used from the unused with gum stamp.
This way you save at least some of the gum on reverse.

Roger Yes, I knew that. The same is valid for the Italian Train Post Offices = Ambulante Postale, and exactly with the same procedure, which wasn't always followed ad literam by intermediate post offices.

Also, it’s a general rule for machine cancels that the killer should be only as tall as, or less, than the dial. This killer is slightly taller.

Paolo -

The letter went to Andelfingen, about 23 km away. I’m pretty sure it would have been a double weight letter though I see no notation. Many small villages had straight-line cancels and Bülach was the closest first class post office so received a date cancel there. Most common are the straight-line cards or letters posted at train stations, where they are put on board the train and receive an “Ambulant” cancel. BTW - Ambulant does not mean ambulance as I’ve seen described on eBay on numerous occasions. Also “EXP. DIST.” at the bottom of cancels does not mean “Express Letter” another common eBay description. But you knew that, didn’t you? )’>)

It was my mistake about the “blocks”. I should have realized you meant sheetlet. Every European catalogue refers to them as Block 1, or Block 15, etc. I was thinking block of 4 with central single cancel. There is one common forgery of the first block, 1934 Zürich. It has misaligned perfs, most noticeable at the top right corner. The color is also slightly washed out and the printing unclear. Scans of the back show smaller than expected perf holes and the misalignment is obvious. I have no knowledge of the possible size difference.

Knuden - Nice cover and analysis!

Greg (g.1) - Don’t buy or sell anything, you need to keep your feedback at 1111. Nice going.

JB3,

Soak a few at a time in lukewarm water and they will float apart. Dry on a clean blotter with a weight (like a book) to prevent curling. You will lose any gum on mint stamps.

A nice find:

This (back) nice Air Mail cover is my latest find.
A registered air mail cover sent from Dresden 31.05.1938 to Johannesburg South Africa.
Post Office clerk notation " 13g" at left.
Correctly franked with 4 stamps, 160 Pf. rate for a triple air mail cover + registration.
25 Pf. foreign letter
105 Pf. air mail up to 15 grams, 35 Pf. per 5 grams
30 Pf. registration
160 Pf. total rate
Greece air mail transit mark of 01.06.1938 at back.
German mail to British Africa pre 1938 was usually forwarded by rail via Munich to Brindisi Italy from where it was flown by a British Empire Airways flying boat via Athens to Cairo and further south.
Late mail was fowarded by a Lufthansa supplement flight to Athens one stop ahead of the Empire Airways schedule. Such covers bear a Athens transit mark. No extra fee had to be paid.

Thanks for trying you too.
I concluded it could be a double rate letter (from 10g to 250g) addressed to a locality situated beyond the postal district (Fernverkehr), from 1.7.1862 the rate for prepaid for letters was 20 rappen; Winkel and Andelfingen appear to be about 15 km apart in straight line air, anyways a few kilometres more than about 10 km, which was the diameter of the Ortskreis.

Paul Many thanks for your definition, I understand where you are coming from. If someone asks a question and I can answer it I will, that's human nature and called being helpful. There is no way I would call myself an stamp expert though. I would, however, call myself a traffic signal control expert and by doing so incur the wrath of every driver, who also think they are traffic control experts just because they drive.

JimboYour posting of the British Central Africa 1d Internal gave me a real sense of Deja Vu. Yesterday I was researching on Google looking for history items for Zomba and amongst others your cover popped up, to see it posted later was odd to say the least. Anyway I can tell you more about the addressee:-
" have just a snippet for you about C.H. Armbruster. His name was Charles Hubert, holding the rank of Major. This rank no doubt was gained during WWI - he was a Lieut. Intell. Corps in Egypt 1915, served with Egyptian Expeditionary Force 1916-1919 (rcvd: 1914/15 Star, MID 4 times),
(b. at Kensington, Mdsx., 1873; d. at Marmacén, Puerto de Andraitx, Mallorca, Spain, 17th April 1957), educated: Christ's Hospital, and King's College, Cambridge (BA 1896).
His title in BCA was: Assist. Collector & Judicial Officer, British Central Africa 1897-1900. Can't tell you if the two functions were legal in BCA's judiciary at Zomba. He may have been a collector for a museum, or have been the fellow you paid your fines to. So that bears checking.
The administration was handled through the foreign office, and he may therefore have been a British gov't employee. I say this because he worked in other stations in the Empire: Political officer, Sudan (1900); served on political missions to Ethiopia (1906, 1907, 1908, and 1909) Legal Inspector, Sudan(1909-1912); and as an examiner for the Amheric language. He wrote two books on Amheric vocabulary, and another on Nubian language lexicon. Very interesting fellow! I notice that Cambridge Library lists an acknowledgment of C.H. Armbruster's donation of his books in 1957 as a "major benefaction".
You can see the whole thread from here:-

There are numerous collectors on this board who have, generally speaking, either SG or Scott catalogs in their possession.
If someone asks a question about a specific stamp in either catalog, it is usually answered with a catalog-specific reply. This does not make the responder a slave to the catalog.
Or, as you put it, Catalog queens.
In the last year I have sent corrections to both Jim Kloetzel and Donna Houseman for listings that have appeared in Scott catalogs and stamp monthly, which will hopefully appear in future editions of both.
No one individual can ever hope to amass the information found in either catalog. They are the collected works of a very large number of individuals.
Likewise, no one can amass a complete collection of world stamps, no matter how hard they may try.
No one, on the face of this planet, has the buying power to achieve such an accomplishment.
What you and Mitchell have achieved is really astounding.
However, collecting stamps is no more of an exercise than repeating catalog numbers and prices to stamp board questions.
Questioning and rewriting the catalogs is another matter, entirely.

PETER to answer your question about CATALOGUE QUEENS .

Years ago when I first started reading this board, there were groups of posters who would answer questions for other posters which was very helpful .This went on for a while ,soon they started calling each other experts and enjoyed the thank-you from the person asking the question who would also call them experts .It stuck me funny that most of them {with just a few exceptions}were just reading what was in the standard catalogs .None of them rarely could show the subject from their collection .

We had all these experts who could never add anything to the discussion or the subject that wasn't written in the catalogue. But they were called experts by the different posters ,so when I respond with scans and pictures of the stamps ,they put my name on their short Sh t list .I was the collector and they were the experts ,so to find a proper name for the group ,it became necessary to give them a name ----CATALOGUE QUEENS

Actually in Italian "Miniature Sheet" is "Blocco Foglietto".
With "Blocco" it is generically intended a block of stamps from a pane or sheet.
On that album page I abbreviated it in 'blocco'. I don't collect those of Italy, even though I have quite a few of them (found in collections) because the "early" ones are too 'modern' -- actually contemporary -- for me.
Then again, on this field of philatelic productions, I prefer the Swiss design: it's like three minutes in acid! LOL

I can't tell you how many times we are told, "I got that through XXXX airport," or, "I've been traveling with that around the world for years." I consider these comments scary as it means there are many NOT doing their jobs. To anyone on this Board that travels, don't use those excuses when a screener finds a prohibited item in your bags, it makes you appear unconcerned with safety no matter your political beliefs.
End of rant, and no need to go New York for train', do good job hea! )'>) In fact, out da door now.

Mitchell,
Not at all! Yours look OK!

David B.,
Thank for the correct terminology regarding 'Miniature or Souvenir Sheets'!

Does anybody know how many inhabitants the village of WINKEL in Switzerland had in 1865 circa?
I ask because I found this cover front, from Winkel to Dudelfingen through Bolach on 13 October 1865(?). I made an internet search -- actually, my wife did it for me, now I can't find it back as I deleted the cookies, history and temporary files -- and it appears that, as of today, this village is relatively "small" (a few thousands of souls).
I didn't do my homework alright because I didn't look up the rate also because I can't remember precisely where this village is located and whether it is/was a tourist locality.

TIA,
Paolo

I went through it and not a single razor cancel, but I've decided to offer for the complete collection. Then I only have to wait a couple of years, hire an "organizer", and start showing. Beats the heck out of viewing eBay day in, day out. Wish I had the money to fly and be there in person, but I'm figuring I'd rather put the airfare towards the collection. I'll let everyone know how it goes!

Roger,
Thank you.
But I believe I didn't express myself correctly, sorry.
I meant this kind of 'blocks' (in German, in English is sheetlet [?], or something):
here

The 'Aarau 1938' block on the left is used and it is on paper (I don't dare to trim it closer or to soak it off); this one measures 74 x 87 mm, like it is the norm.
The unused block on the right (over the previous) is about 1 mm taller, it measures 74 x 88(+) mm.
I wanted to ask if this is normal, if 1mm is within the tolerance.
Of course, if it were smaller, I wouldn't have asked as I would have immediately thought it might have been reduced (trimmed).

Paolo-

Thinking out loud - maybe the block is from a booklet? I couldn't find any information listing size difference of stamps during that period. Your's is the perfect question for "Tell", our society journal. The Secretary sends the questions out to a person he thinks is "expert", then publishes the answer. Sometimes there is follow-up in later editions.

willderspin, I very much like the design of your album page. You do need to research a little more before finalizing the layout though. The top pair of stamps were issued in 1847, not 1841. The set at the bottom were issued (except the 5˘) in 1851, not 1847. The 5˘ value from that series wasn't issued until 1856 IIRC.

You'll want to put some extra thought into what text you place under the stamp, since you'll often be mentioning color, paper type or perforation values there. You might want to make the text somewhat smaller so that you can easily fit three or four lines in that same area. Good start though!

macemore2007, stamp collector's typically mount there stamps using plastic holders that are two strips of plastic fused together at the bottom (or both bottom and top with a slit in the center of the backing) that have an adhesive on the back to allow placement on the paper. They are typically either clear or in a dark blue or black to allow for contrast. Those are affixed to paper and the paper is typically placed in sheet protectors before display. This is convenient when you're making changes often or when you have too much material to mount on the walls. In your case, picture frames might be ideal, though make sure the glass doesn't pass UV though, UV will fade the stamp designs over time.

You might also be interested in other stamp related items that fit within the Star Wars theme. There will be a number of differently designed First Day Covers (FDCs) for those stamps, as well a various souvenir pages showcasing the stamps. Stamp Collectors will also be looking for the stamps used on commercial cover (ie., one that's used for a normal purpose rather than to make a collectible) where the proper stamp is used within the normal life of the stamp with the correct rate.

There are other countries that have issued Star Wars stamps in the past, and unscrupulous people who have issued 'illegals' (stamps that purport to be valid for postage, but are not, typically from either small, obscure countries or from 'countries' that don't actually exist). You might look for those as well.

Good day all!

Mitchell,
Thanks for looking and for your kind mention!

Roger,
Thank for your e-mails on Swiss classic items.
A short question on 'non classic'material:
is it normal for blocks (post 1934) to be about 1 mm larger than the catalogue (Michel and Zumstein) specifications?
I ask because I have a block (that of 1938) which is 1 mm taller than the others, which dimensions are checked with those prescribed.
And if so, how were the block cut from each other? By means of a rolling blade or else? TIA

Peter,
I presume that with the term "catalog queens" it was referred to those people who answer questions and/or engage in a debate solely alleging the pieces of information they have gathered from stamp catalogues...

Greetings,
Paolo

Knud There nothing wrong with that other board at all except it gets neglected like these ones:-

http://www.stamp-forum.com/

http://www.rhodesianstudycircle.org.uk/phpBB2/index.php

All three boards suffer from spamming, actually the Rhodesian one just has a clear out. You can surf around and find threaded stamp chat in a lot of places but most of the time the thread topic has a poor title and it is not obvious what the content is until you dive in. Brad's site shown above had good ideas by actually running a list of countries to post in. If stampchat+ went down that route I for one would be interested as I am sure would many others. But like any site it has to be properly run and maintained. We have so many fantastic items posted here it if the poster could also post at the same time on another site under country/subject heading what a great library could be built up.

cheers

I'm sad to say I don't know how flint was formed in chalk.
It is obviously secondary since I have fossils that are completely silicified.
I'm guessing the organic remains of the dead beasties acted as nuclei for the attraction of silica-rich groundwater that flowed through the chalk.

Some more thoughts on the "continent topic"
Whatever the case I think it would be much to much for anyone person to organize and lead all of those meetings. I would think there should be an organizer who picks the topic. This person would preferrably be a World-Wide collector or someone who is familiar with world wide philately in general. I see this person as someone who would seek a chat member who specializes in the particular area to be discussed. The person setting up each meetings topic would usually be different. i.e. Paolo for Italy, Alec - Germany, Milenko - chile, Anne - Egypt etc etc. This would give the topic the best possible chance of drawing in outside experts and having a meanigful outcome.

How about doing the A-Z thing during the weekdays and the continent idea on three weekends a month leaving the fourth for the EUSC meeting. The problem I see, however, is that some continents have many more countries than others.
Pretty hard to break down N. America further than U.S. Canada and Mexico. While Europe has many major countries as well as S. America, Asia, Africa. I would think these countries would be quite diluted if we did whole continents. Europe could be broken down many ways like; Britain, benelux, baltic, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Western etc. Africa; Fr. Africa, British Africa, Itlaian, independent etc.
Of course doing a single country at a time would take forever and I think a lot of people would lose interest.

I think we need to decide whether this would be a chat board project or one of the EUSC? I would lean to it being a chat board deal as opposed to a EUSC agenda.

wrd., I don't know whether that is correct or not. It would be of little importance to Postal History collectors but it is of importance to ALL collectors of US stamps. As 99.99% (or thereabouts) of US stamp collectors are US based that is why I queried why the comment was aimed at non US based.

Whether you personally do not consider it of importance is up to you but it has to be accepted that it is there and it isn't going to go away or ignored. The prices asked and realised is another matter,

Personally I consider the US method of grading as a dismal failure and grading should be centered around (pun intended)condition first and foremost,

dbenson small nit - I would change the end of your sentence to read "it is of grave importance to some US collectors in the US.". I couldn't care less about grading, and I know there are many other US collectors in the US who feel the same.

NOIP about 2 years ago I purchased a box lot at a local silent auction. In that lot was a group of perhaps 50 covers with letters included, all from the same family (mostly apparently between a husband and wife). I posted a question about the family to a geneology forum (http://genforum.com/chapman/messages/8632.html), and got no replies. Well, about a month ago I received an email from the great-grandson of the writers. I've sent the letters to him, figuring they are going back where they belong. I'd love to find a trove of letters between my great-grandparents ... who knows, maybe someday.

Single comment after reading about the English limestone areas. I visited Grimes Graves once and found it really interesting. The locals, circa 2500BC dug into the chalk and found a layer of flint 9m down. One can climb down a ladder today and get an idea of what it may have been like working in a hole with only a small oil lamp!

I'm curious how flint is formed in the chalk and what happens to thses nodules when they remain until limestone is formed?

I could participate in all of jaywild's weeks except AZ prcancels, I know I don't have any of those. Who would collect such an obscure topic? All the rest I could find in my Swiss "holdings". Isn't that a highfalutin word?

Maybe Mitch can ask for a volunteer to "host" the the weekly topic discussions, primarily to update the announcement message and decided the future topics. I'm all for someone who has not been an officer previously.

BTW - I could aslo cover Anne's weeks as well.

I think the topics can be a little more limited than the areas suggested by David.

Another possibility is showing items within specific decades starting for example at 1900 - 1910 and the same week 1900 - 1890. Then the following week 1910- 1920 and 1890 -1880, next 1920-1930 and 1880-1870, etc., etc. This would provide an interesting view of changes in stamp postal history and stamp production.

Roger, Roger, Roger Much as I appreciate your helpful attempt to hash out a schedule for posting topics, I think there's a certain imbalance in how you've set it up. I much prefer the following schedule:

April 29 - May 5 - topic of the Week; British Commonwealth
May 6 - 12 - topic of the week; Pacific Basin
May13 - 19; Africa
May 20 - 26; Egypt
May27 - June 2 ; Luxembourg
June 3 - June 9; pyramids.

No problem Roger we have to try out new things, whatever the majority want so be it. The key message I think is having a linked logo on this board showing new users there is a lot more going on behind the scenes.
Talking of links had our link accepted on this one:-

If Bill's around could you make a note to provide a reciprocal link on the yellow pages.
cheers

Actually now I've made some spacing adjustments I sort of like going back to the old colors as I have it. I didn't realize until yours came up how jittery the eBay color scheme looks all along the top row. I like the graphic size differences and overlap of the letters created by the multi-color "Club". I don't know who did that, but it works for me. Obviously all I did was change the spacing, using cut and paste, from the club logo in the Yellow Boxes.

I'm glad all these different options have been tried out, and I guess at some point Bill will post a selection, then we'll vote for our three favorites. Then the following week, vote for the one we want for perpetuity, unless eBay objects. LOL.

Logo No point asking me to do anything with the logo as I'm pretty much a computer DAU, (Dumb A** User). Hopefully a final version will be agreed upon soon and someone will explain how we can copy the image and teach us DAU's how to insert the logo into auctions etc.

Paul I really liked your idea about timed slotted discussions. Despite the ongoing A-Z showings it could well work. The A-Z was just an idea to get everyone's attention back to Philately. I never meant for it to be a, "set in stone ruling" that it was to be the only subject discussed here.
Perhaps one of the Saturday or Sunday's could be set aside to at least try a topical discussion ? If so seeing as most of the board probably do collect US stamps how about all you US collectors trying to agree a time and start the ball rolling ? Each of you could perhaps talk about a certain area ie Postal Rates, Prexies, Parcel Post, Duck stamps or any other subject.
However the biggest problem I can foresee is in finding a time on this board that would allow most to actually come online and actually participate. Though by far the biggest problem is the stupid 200 post limit restriction.
A threaded board is the ideal place really for such topical meetings. I'd love to see the EUSC set up a Forum where such topics can be stored and viewed by anyone using key search words. But maybe that is something which is just a little to far off at this present time.

So please do keep the ideas coming in everyone.

I'm thinking your logo would be perfect for the Stamp Watch Committee. The family protected from fraud with justice in the background. Hang the miscreants by their hinges! )'>)

Paul -
I see nothing wrong with having days for different topics, but I don't think a schedule will work as it will tend to limit those who don't collect the area. I know, some have a more well round collecting interest than others. LOL
I think it can be done more generally as a week at a time with a schedule posted similar to the Yellow Boxes where it can be announced in advance that, for example:
April 29 - May 5 - topic of the Week; British Commonwealth
May 6 - 12 - topic of the week; Pacific Basin
May13 - 19; Africa
May 20 - 26; Switzerland
May27 - June 2 ; Switzerland
June 3 - June 9; Switzerland

You get the picture. Topics can be added to the posted message as each week passes and is deleted. This in no way has to compete with the alphabet, etc. It might even make it easier for people to participate since focusinf choices makes it easier for people to decide. Kids at school hate it when the are told they can write a report on any topic, they always want the teacher to suggest limitations in case they go too far out or in our case "off-topic". I can find items that relate ro British Commonwealth from my Swiss material, or I can find Africa, or South America. I think your idea is excellent and an evolution of the alphabet idea which was "brilliant". Thanks Alec!

Most likely that will result in people coming here and asking if $8.45 is a fair amount to ship a stamp! LOL I have had coffee this morning, but I would never have thought to look for a link to Stamp Chat on the shipping page, but it's a start.

Who knows, maybe someone will connect the dots and enhance stamp category auction pages by including a link to Chat at the bottom of each auction. YeaH!

Peter - Much better in my opinion, now for one final tweak. Can you delete the space between Stamp and Club making it a single word StampClub. I think the "S" of USERS should be aligned above the "b" of Club. This requires a right shift of eBay to close the gap to "eBayusers" The "U" of USERS will fit very close in to the "Y" of eBay.
I think this will make the logo appear as a single unit. Right now it has the appearance of ebay/Stamp as one unit and USERS/Club as another unit.

Here's my attempt, but I had to use the original colors.

Jim,

Thanks for the analysis of the covers. I bought the shoebox for the labels/stickers used for postage but there are a few other interesting items.

But the 'SPOILED' threw me as I hadn't come across any auxiliary marking like that and after the Jan&Dean (whatever his names were) handstamp-on-cover craze here a few weeks ago I wasn't sure about the origins. Sometimes kids play around with their rubber stamp sets or an employee tests out a rubber stamp on a scrap enevelope.

Matt inAZ… I think the marking on your first item is genuine, and indicates that there was something wrong with the label as printed. Perhaps the ZIP code was wrong. It differs from the handwritten ZIP. Or possibly the date is incorrect. The “N/L 9/7” means “Notice Left Sept 7”, and perhaps the item was paid for on the 7th but the meter says the 8th. I’ve seen that stamp before and I believe (although I may be wrong) it indicates there’s something wrong with the label.

I think your second item is a convenience-franked double-weight first class letter—15˘ for the first oz and 13˘ for the second. The Special Delivery marking on the back is an anomaly. Perhaps because of the envelope’s size, color and secure taping on the back it was mistaken for SD at the receiving PO, or perhaps all the non-“business-sized” mail was stamped with that receiver because no other one could be located that day. (Granada Hills is not a big PO.) A true SD item would be so indicated on the front, and as you say 30˘ wouldn’t come close to paying the fee.

OH WELL Gave it my best idea ,guess the members have no interest in haveing TIME SLOTTED DISCUSSIONS

For some silly reason I thought there were a few who would like a once a week discussion on British Commonwealth stamps or maybe a group discussion on some part of the Michel's German Specialised catalog . These set time discussions would give outsiders a fix time to met here and talk to members on their specility field and maybe show what their studies have found or even help a newer collector along .

Also since everyone watchs E-BAY ,we would have a time period to discuss some of the interesting sales and price movements in the hobby .OH WELL for me back to throwing barbs and straighting out the wayward posters. Still laughing about the postings here .....time to go to work ....need to make some funds so in the fall can out bid a few dealers for some major collections in New York at a stamp auction ....paul

Jim,

re: Continuation of Modern USA Postal History from last night...

No solo Liberty or Prominent Americans. Mostly domestic USA mail from the 90's, auxiliary markings, some use of contemporary commemoratives, a few special delivery, pointing fingers and such. Stamp collector's mail, some philatelic items, mostly commercial covers, lots of flag 'F' and 'G' stamps, 3 or 4 labels instead of stamps that made it through the system.

I only paid $3 for the shoebox!

I went through all (couple of hundred) the cover and have questions on these 2:

1. SPOILED. Appears to be a postage due notice for 50c, but a handstamp 'SPOILED' across the USPS label. Mischief?'

2.  30c Americana. Apparent 1st class solo use of Scott 1606 in 1979 (3 weeks after issuance) from San Diego, CA to Granada Hills, CA. It has a San Fernando SPECIAL DELIVERY receiving marking on the back. It is a thick envelope capable of holding several ounces easily. But why the 30c rate? Special Delivery was about $2.00 at the time. A 2 ounce rate would have been 28c. Non standard surcharge was 7c.

A convenience overpayment of 2c? Also, I'm not sure this stamp is tagged. Under UV the return address label glows like crazy while the stamp doesn't glow all that much.

Any ideas?

Seems to me that we already have a limited ability to create a threaded board. We could start using the Collectibles board in that way. OR---we could set ourselves up as an eBay group--

As you can see, there are a number of stamp-related groups, some more active than others.

At any rate, I have a dog whimpering for out (assuming he remembers what out is--he's at that unfortunate stage). Good night to all and to all sweet dreams of eusc boards, proactively finding fakes, finishing the semester (!!) and 5 days off before summer classes start. Anne

I submit that the internet is still in it's infancy. There are several hundred stamp chat boards already. There will probably be many thousands by the end of the next decade.
That said Ebay has only one! Any board that grows out of the (very limited) ebay board is likely to have excellent chances of surviving the others. The EUSC is not the ebay chat board or visa versa. It is a seperate entity and if it is a viable entity, (I would think) deserves it's own chat board. We now have a clickable logo to direct to the club which members on this board can use to redirect newbies to the club. Unfortunately at the present time, their is nobody home to chat with.
I'm not going to beat this horse into the ground, as it seems to already be out-voted. Just wanted to add another way of considering it.

IO,

almost correct but the what-is-not-there can occur on a genuine overprint and should not be a guide to whether the overprint is genuine or fake whilst the what-is-there gives the where-for-all whether or not the overprint is whither or thither,

I'll agree.
What is on the overprint is more important than what is not.
It is however, easier to see what is not there rather than what is.
The what-is-not-there should then prime you for what is there.
The diagonal cuts on the letters are then a complete give-away that the item is a forgery, regardless of the wholly unlikely town stamp.

I haven't received any membership requests in my email over the last week or two. Maybe my SPAM filter is tossing them out? Could those viewer who have requested membership in eUSC over the last couple of weeks please retry? I'll manually go through the SPAM to verify they don't get placed there.

I have placed the new logo design on the web page, so even the old messages here should now include the word 'users'. I lean toward the design having the users' in one color, like has been done with stamp, the multicolored ebay and club would better balance out that way.

Those who have place the logo in their web pages... It looks like you might be putting the full sized logo in and asking the browser to resize the image smaller. This wastes bandwidth, since the viewer has to download the full large image (about 45k) before it can resize. The small image I placed on the web page is much more efficient at 2k.

Paul

I will agree that numismatists will pay large sums for currency. However, I am probably equally sure that you won't find a numismatist paying $10 for a modern $1 US bill.
Likewise a stamp collector would rather go to a PO and pay face value for a genuine stamp rather than cough up an extra dollar because they didn't know it was issued and missed it while it was on sale, and even less to pay $100 for a stamp that was never isssued.

Maybe someone can contact with a "power that be" and investigate the possibility of restarting a Stamps discussion threaded board such as was tried previously. We're all reformed since APS solves the bad auctions, so we wouldn't have anything to report on a threaded board as it can be done on each individual auction page!

Each topic would be presented by a different specialist group within the thread. As we know the most active threads remain at the top of the list, so if posters correctly title their threads (including the name of the country) one could find topics very easily. I see no point in creating a new Discussion Board, that will just dilute what we have here.

BTW - Peter's big and small logs appear the same size when I open the links.

Who would have though it is more difficult to present items by number than letter? I keep waiting for "my" numbers to come up , then forget. Dang!

Paul I agree that would be really cool. Unfortunately I don't think it would work here. There are already a few agendas (answering ebayer questions, EUSC, A-Z and just old friends chatting) and only 200 posts till scroll off. If it was a threaded board it would work nicely. The problem is jamming up this board with to many topics. That is why I was pushing for the EUSC to have it's own board so it would not overwhelm this one.
If ebay would spring for another threaded stamp board that would be a great direction, however I don't think they care.

Io, they were applied by handstamps and are not plate printed overprints and missing letters or dots especially the 1st. or last letter or missing dots does not immediately confirm it to be bad. The shape of the letters which in that case are a long way from the genuine design apart from being used at the wrong Post Office should have been noticed by any competent describer,

TIME SLOTTING ,how it would work The first thing would be to make some rough time slot for various subjects that we know posters will and can talk about to others . For example the U.S. British Commonweath and Germany would have the biggest times allotted to them. The Germany should overlap so people in Germany are involued at there best time.So something like the Hong Kong study group may meet at 4:00 A.M for my time zone but its there best time for their members .

The club members would have to agree to only post that subjects questions, answers and links to the assign subject matter .Naturally you can;t stop outside posters asking questions on a different subject but they can be asked to come back in a few hours for a answer.

The key will be the first few weeks to make it happen and then overtime more people will be stopping in to see and read stuff from their area of interest . I feel a lot of people who have limited time couldn't find enought of their subject to return to this board .

Eventually a set sechudle would be set and this sechedule could be made into its own yellow box thing and it could be advertised for readers of different publications .It also can be linked throught auction listings much like what is discussed here today about the logo link .

There are so many small groups that have a hard time making a newsletter and knowning their own members this board can serve as a link to the far reachs of their membership .

Time slots can also be set up for what is selling and whats going on for people who want to sell on e-bay sort off a help note to the stamp market place . The ideas are many but it can become the premire go to place for all philatelist and hinge lickers .....paul

I was just for-instancing the most obvious element of the forgery.
A pity that they can't get a good philatelist working for them.
I've gotten some good bargains from them for misdescribed stamps.
On the other hand, other people have gotten bad buys from misdescribed stamps.
Experience and a lot of literature outlining other people's experience is a worthwhile investment to avoid being left with worthless crap.
Not that I am advocating investing in stamps.
Just that throwing away greenbacks on tiny worthless pieces of paper is rather pointless.

Well, I remember seeing softball-sized hail when I was six, during a bad tornado night in Amarillo in the early '60s. We were in our cellar with the neighbors, too.
In the morning I saw that the limbs had been ripped off every tree in a several block area of the East side of town where we then lived. One had went straight along Grand, and three others had not touched down.

So far, this is already turning into a Bad Year for tornado season on the Plains!

Mitch is smart to have a radar going 24/7!!

Thanks for the thoughts for the inhabitants of Eagle Pass.
It, along with Del Rio and Uvalde are three of our regional campuses.
Alpine, itself, is nestled in a valley and unlikely to ever be subjected to a tornado since they would be broken up by the surrounding mountains.
Out on the plains is a totally different story.

The Old Calabar provisional overprints were used only at Old Calabar although a few of the values were used at Forcados River which received supplies from Old Calabar, any other cancel immediately casts great doubts on their genuiness,

I have reported this one to Ebay but doubt anything will happen,

KEN C. The idea of time slotting the week , at first just a few time slots would be a experiment to see first how the regulars support it and get it started .But its not unrealisic to think a few different special interest philatelic socities would look at whats happening and ask for a time period to talk to and discuss their area of interest .

The amount of new posters here would grow in a huge way .

Peter Thanks for working on it. The users is hard to see no matter what because of the color of the "E". No big deal, methinks. The rest is quite legible and the users is really just a token addition anyway (but at least it has the correct colors). The problem with your link is that there is to much HTML text and the original image is to large. I have shrunk down the image and changed the HTML to make it work everytime without any messing about.
I think this is the one we should go with. It is a little larger which makes it a bit easier to see:

There isn't a stamp discussion board because it was nixed by eBay. It seems that they could not stand the heat generated by regular board members so "amalgamated" it with the collectibles chat board.

It also used to be the case that "pinkies" would show up on this board and try to instill the "spirit of community". I guess we are now all "instilled" or eBay doesn't give a brass farthing about community anymore, since we haven't seen one in several years.

We also used to be rewarded with "skippies" - cash tokens for use for buying on eBay as a reward for helping people out. $10 a month must have been too much for their coffers.

When you cut-and-paste to the chat board, the command is so long that the board inserts a line break which skrews up the html. So, you have to put the cursor at the begining of each line in the box and backspace to remove the hidden backspace. Then if it removes a crucial space, insert it again.

Ken Yes, I think that is a problem with coming up with topics. However, monthly club topics generally lend themselves to more general and universal elements of philately. As you probably know we (the chat board) have been doing a weekly topic from A-Z which is continuing with numbers and then on to topicals A-Z. This on going topic takes on all areas of the world and pretty much serves everyone to some degree.
I like your suggestion as a daily topic for the chat board but it is not the purpose of the EUSC to takeover this board. If the EUSC did happen to have it's own board that would be an excellent course. This chatboard at present is set on a course with the A-Z's right now and I would think another major daily topic would be too much.
Just my thoughts.

I've just been reading about a possible new direction for this club. I admit that I haven't perticipated much, and I think I know the reason:

All of my collecting interests are centered around US stamps. I really don't have much interest in reading about anything else. (Except for the occasional repartee).

Now, if the posts were to be set up with each continent given a particular day of the week, plus two "open" days, I would definitely read and comment on "my" day.

If I had any questions about other stamps, I would know which day to ask for the answer, since the major collectors would be there on that day.

Any ideas as to why there isn't a Stamps Board over in the Dicussion Boards?

Anyway, in the absence of one I'm going to launch my pet frustration here in the hope that some sellers might sit up and take note.

I collect only used stamps so condition is very important. I want to see the quality of the cancellation, and I want to see what the perfs and centring are like.

But there are so many sellers - and often high powered ones - who:
a) just provide a scan of the top value(s) in a set; or
b) neatly arrange them so each stamp is half concealing the one next to it. If you take that much care, why can't you take the care to make sure that each stamp is fully visible?; or
c) offer a tiny picture that's barely the size of the stamp in real life, or blurred or both.

So put simply: all of you sellers who don't supply decent pictures, you don't get my trade. I immediately hit the back button.

Maybe just post a link to an auction by the person concerned? Or say what you want elsewhere (e.g the StampChat+ board) and direct interested readers to that?

Mind you, a lot of talk is fairly direct on here sometimes ...

I know I said I wasn't gonna mess with stamps anymore, but I gots to do something with them. So I have a couple questions:
1. I have a HEROES OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 collectible with a stamp and a coin. Is it worth anything, and if so where should I list it? In stamps or in coins or both?

B. I have a whole !@#$load of stamps listed as a lot and they are not selling. Can everybody tell me what I am doing wrong?

Jeff & Lindy… Thanks. The cover in question is this. I’m assuming it’s triple weight. The rate changed from 3˘ an ounce to 4˘ an ounce on 1 Aug 1958, so I guess an overzealous postal clerk assessed the two extra ounces at the new rate, even though the new rate didn’t start until one day later. Kraft, magnanimously, paid the 8˘ “due” without complaint.

you are of course presuming it would be charged a Postage Due.
I have had 3 letters recently from Iowa, each correctly addressed to Australia, one bearing a .39c Sunflower stamp and two with the Flag & SOL FIRST CLASS. All three letters arrived, in a very short time, and without any 'due' or 'insufficient' markings, and I know for a fact the sender did not get charged any Postage Due.

Matt… Oh I agree! It’s the searching and sifting that’s fun. I just think that lot has already been picked through. A true hodge-podge from those years would contain a number of the 5˘, 10˘ and even 1˘ issues of the 1850s, and I only saw a few 24s on cover.

I’m thinking about buying some lots currently up on eBay that are largely sight unseen, but have generally the kind of articles I’m looking for at present.

OAS,

I can't see what your complaining about, Ebay & the APS have most probably done the right thing as far as your items are concerned. Someone complained and then it went through the routine to make sure the items were incorrectly descibed and they got pulled. The system works well for US material and bad material is handled the way it should be, the problem with the system is that it hardly works for non US material but that is not what you are complaining about.

oas-cny: not taboo, it's just that 16 minutes isn't a very long time to generate responses. This isn't a live chat board. Give it a few hours.

In fact, the APS/eBay relationship has been a major issue in this forum at various times. You are running afoul of some objective rules; the stamps are (even if not wilfully) misdescribed and the descriptions can be corrected. (ebay is not going to stop you from running a #9 with the pen cancel price, or a reperforated stamp if it is described as such). By contrast, a dealer selling a stamp at a ridiculous price -- as long as it is properly described -- isn't breaking any objective rule. It may be bad marketing, but the market will set a price based on the information presented. APS isn't out to make market decisions. Plenty of overpriced stuff is offered here, and many other places. Sometimes it sells. More often it doesn't.

Well I guess I shouldn't have said anything about how the APS is operating to help Ebay clean up its act. I guess I broke some sort of rules complaining. Didn't realize obvious dissatisfaction with APS and eBay's policing was TABOO! Thought this was a free discussion board.

Thanks for the 'welcome back'. I don't post here much any more because I don't like the eBay censorship. There is another chat board which I do read and participate in more frequently. A number of the participants are some of the most respected philatelists in our hobby.

EBAY: I ALSO DON'T LIKE HAVING TO SIGN IN JUST IN ORDER TO POST THE THIS BOARD (EVEN THOUGH I JUST SIGNED IN TO EBAY FIVE MINUTES PREVIOUSLY). EBAY'S SOFTWARE ENGINEERING INCOMPETENCE CONTINUES TO ASTOUND ME...VERY SAD FOR A BILLION DOLLAR CORPORATION. IN ADDITION TO THE 'SIGN IN OVER AND OVER AGAIN' PROBLEM:

  • IT ONLY TOOK EBAY SEVERAL WEEKS TO FIX THE 'NEW HEADER' PROBLEM (WHICH MADE EBAY PAGES UNPRINTABLE). THIS PROBLEM WOULD NEVER HAVE OCCURRED IF EBAY'S TECHNICAL STAFF KNEW HOW TO SET UP AND EXECUTE AN ADEQUATE TESTING PLAN.
  • IN THE NINE YEARS THAT I HAVE BEEN USING EBAY, THE SEARCH ENGINE HAS NEVER WORKED PROPERLY. CURRENTLY, ONE CAN EXECUTE THE SAME SEARCH REPEATEDLY AND GET DIFFERENT ITEM COUNTS FROM ONE EXECUTION TO ANOTHER ... AND THIS IS AFTER ADJUSTING FOR THE FACT THAT A FEW ITEMS MAY HAVE CLOSED OR BEEN NEWLY LISTED BETWEEN EXECUTIONS. THE NET IS THAT YOU CAN'T RELY UPON EBAY'S SEARCH ENGINE TO FIND WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. EBAY SELLERS SHOULD BE (AND MANY ARE) FURIOUS ABOUT THIS BECAUSE THEY AREN'T GETTING WHAT THEY ARE PAYING FOR.
  • AND THERE IS THE AFOREMENTIONED ISSUE THAT I CAN'T RESPOND TO A LEGITIMATE QUESTION FROM ANOTHER EBAY USER REGARDING ONE OF MY EBAY REVIEWS.
I PREDICT THAT EBAY'S ARROGANCE AND INATTENTION TO USERS (BOTH BUYERS AND SELLERS) WILL EVENTUALLY BE THEIR DOWNFALL DESPITE THE OVERWHELMING ADVANTAGE THAT THEY HAVE FROM THE FACT THAT BUYERS WANT TO BE WHERE THE MOST AVAILABLE ITEMS ARE AND SELLERS WANT TO BE WHERE THE MOST POTENTIAL BUYERS ARE. THERE IS, FOR EXAMPLE, AN ONLINE STAMP AUCTION SITE WHERE THE VOLUMES ARE APPROACHING THE STAMP VOLUMES OF EBAY. I SUSPECT, BUT DO NOT KNOW, THAT THIS IS HAPPENING IN OTHER CATEGORIES AS WELL.

Maybe we will have to change the name of our EUSC to OAUSC (Online Auction Users Stamp Club).

Well we all got our wish! The APS has become the policeman of the "little guy" in the stamp world. Last week I was told to take a stamp down because I failed to see it was reperforated. The APS because I put up such clear pictures up was able to make that determination. Took that 1.27 stamp right down!!! This week I showed a catalog price for a #9 pen cancelled SHAME ON ME the CORRECT price for a pen cancel is less then catalog!!! Again had to cancel an auction for $3.25 ---- for incorrect description. Well the aPS fails every week to see the 100's of collections put up by "the leading seller of collection one Ebay where they show outrageous prices on there leader stamps EVERY DAY. IO have complained week in and wek out but the APS vnever makes they take them down. So yes the little guy better be a professional philatelist or gtet off eBay the APS wants only their memebers selling on Ebay -- Im not going to mention condition, catsalog numbers catalog prices any more -- I wont even call them stamps. SO THERE APS find me mis-describing things that way 2600 auctions 99.8% satisfaction and this crap!!!!

One from the sub-Post Office in Felsham Road (March 25 1901), the other from East Putney, Near Railway Station (October 19, 1900)

I am enjoying the debate on what to do to grow the club numbers, encourage more juniors, etc.etc. a discussion I have heard at Stamp Club Meetings since I first joined one in 1974. However, I do think flyers at local stamp shows, and even given out at local stamp club meetings is a great idea.

Just for fun,

I found an image of one of the holy grails of Chilean philately:

a cover
with two pairs of the 1854 Gillet Santiago print in the Chocolate shade. The classic Chilean stamps were engraved; Gillet printer had more experience with the lithographic technique, so it resulted in poor printings due to the use of inappropriate inks. This shade is exceptional and extremely rare.

At his point in time it may be wise to not use logos that say eBay Stamp Club. This issue was very important to eBay. It does not want to have its name implying support of the "club". That was the reason to change the name to eBay Users' Stamp Club. It is no longer up for debate, the fact is eBay has a closed eye to the current name use an dcould at any time ask us to stop using it~! Again, I suggest you don't use the eBay Stamp Club logo. It is currently hidden and should be changed. Please give thos ewho are able a chance to change it before we have problems. Thanks.

NOIP… I have to agree about centering.

The obsession has become ludicrous on eBay—as long as a stamp has perfect centering it will command a ridiculous price, even with tears, holes etc.

It would be nice to convince PSE to start with stamp condition and then tack on a plus or minus based on centering, but since a contrary system is already in place I seriously doubt that’s going to happen.

Jim

lgt, I think most of the participants here would agree with you especially us foreigners who look at centering as something that a premium is given to if a stamp is perfect. If there are faults then centering doesn't even come into play as the faults have precluded the item from being valued except as a spacefiller. Of course items that are exceptionally difficult to obtain without minor or major faults are a different kettle of perfs.

Grading:

1. It is too biased toward centering when there are other factors that also impact on the "condition rarity" and overall desireability of a stamp.
2. Although grading stamps according to a single "number" (or number and letter) has an obvious attraction, it can be difficult to tell exactly what (other than centering) went into that number. Yes, the PSE down-grades for things like faults, but without making the down-grade explicit, one is left to speculate. For example, if a stamp gets a grade that is worse than you'd expect on the basis of its centering, is that because of faults that you can't see in the picture or is it because the PSE experts were out too late the previous night?
3. Uniform criteria for centering means that well-centered stamps from notoriously poorly centered issues don't get the recognition that they deserve. This is particularly likely with less advanced collectors who might tend to believe that an 85 is an 85, period.

This last problem seems half-way to being solved, because SMQ gives you a good idea of the range of what is available (and, of course, submitted to PSE) for a given stamp or issue. All that needs to be done is to put on the PSE certificate exactly how a particular stamp stacks up against its peers. For example, along with your grade of, say 85, the PSE could note on the certificate that, as of the certificate's date, 5% of submitted examples had graded higher. Then you'd know what your 85 really means. Yes, I recognize that the percentages are dynamic and you can always look them up in SMQ but at least the certificate itself would finally reflect the condition idiosyncracies of a particular issue. (Yes, this is only as of a certain date but, as Scott T. points out, even the grade itself is subject to change over time.) In this manner, you could still use uniform criteria for grading the various issues and still give each issue its due. I think that other Board members have said much the same thing, so hopefully this will receive real consideration.

In terms of the first two issues that I noted, we had a similar problem a couple of decades ago in neurosurgery. The "level of consciousness" is an important predictor of outcome after a head injury and is also used to triage patients to the appropriate level of care. The problem was that we had no standardized, let alone precise, way of describing the level of consciousness.

The first attempts to put a single, objective "number" on the level of consciousness proved inadequate. For example, on a scale of 1-15 (with 15 being normal)some scores of 8 define "coma" and others don't. What neurosurgeons did was come up with three "sub-scales" -- best motor response (M), best verbal response (V), and best eye-opening response (R). Each one is scored according to a hierarchy of responses (and the scales can, and are, assigned different weights). Then the three scores are added together to give a single, comprehensive score. However, the subscale scores are always (or at least should be) noted. Thus M5-V2-E1 and M5-V1-E2 both add up to 8 but (take my word for it) only the first one constitutes "coma." Yes, in most cases, we just go by the total score, but each of the subscale scores is there for those who want the detail. In actual practice, this "Glasgow Coma Scale" scoring system has proven simple and reliable and it is now a world-wide standard. The analogy for grading stamps is worth considering. And, as difficult as grading stamps might be

lluehhhb That's a MAJOR effort you're undertaking. Many thanks.

Last night's purchases have gotten me back into album-making mode--worked on some text for a Suez Canal page. Now I've got to actually put the pages together, find a vintage post card or two to decorate the historical material with, and convince my printer to work. The last thing will be the hardest. Figure one page for background, 1 page for the set, one for a special item or two, and one for forgeries. A lot of paper yes for a few stamps, but the academic in me likes context.

I was inetersted in this item.
Sent an e-mail to seller through eBay, requesting a higher definition image of the 30c. stamp, but received no response, probably for the reasons Philcomp has exposed in his post of Apr-23-07 at 16:14:31 PDT.
He also had this very nice looking Strubel 2 rappen with certificate of Fritz Moser, who, I believe, was one amongst the best Swiss experts.

Good day all!

Hi there, Chinggiskhan!
Hope all is fine in Mongolia!

Jim (IO), the recent negative feedback for that seller concerned the sale of forgeries.
It appears the buyer paid with PayPal 1350 US$; when he received the lots, he ascertained it were forgeries; then he might have requested his money back from PayPal -- just a guess -- and left three negative feedback. The seller replied with three negative feedback just about one hour later. The negative feedback the seller released was not removed by eBay.
Take in consideration that on such an apparently heavy lot, if the seller declares the value on the package, you might have to pay douane fees (it can be expensive! I recall I had to pay about 17% of the declared value in one occasion, a sending from the USA to Europe).

jbthree if you have a Scott catalog there should be an identifier at the end of the book that helps. China vs Japan isn't too difficult after you've looked at a few. Japan stamps will often have either a Chrysanthemum crest or the country name. The first character of the country name resembles the number 8. China will often have either a stylized sun or a character that resembles a rectangle (wider than it is tall) with a vertical line down the middle of the rectangle (extending above and below the rectangle).

New acquisitions here and here. These are forgeries of Suez Canal Company stamps. These stamps were issued by the Suez Canal Company in 1868 and were good for only aboutg 40 days. Forgeries abound. Most of the forgeries are pretty easy to discern. There a number of different characteristics and plate flaws on the genuine stamps that most of the forgeries lack.

HOWEVER, there is one set of forgeries that's more problematic and more likely to slip by. These were made from sthe original stones used to print the 40c. A dealer by the name of Saatjian bought the stone at auction in 1907 and proceeded to make lots and lots of "private reprints" in all four values. Because they're from the original stone, they have the characteristics of the genuine stamps. Aside from some differences in color, the way you can tell what they are is that the 1c, 5c, and 20c values have the type characteristics of the 40c--which of course they shouldn't.

The printing stones for the other 3 values were found in 1947 in the Company's offices in Paris. They're now in the Paris Postal Museum.

If you mean this, I'm already a bidder at $1.
I don't normally bid on auctions where the user ID is kept private and won't bid again. The auction is worth whatever the final bidder pays for it, which is probably a lot more than I am willing to pay seeing as I don't see much of worth.
Looking at the seller's negative feedbacks, most of the recent negative comments seem to have been removed by eBay.
Something I had not seen before.
Either the feedbacks were particularly blasphemous (though most seem to have been by foreign bidders in a non-English language which I doubt most eBay programmers could probably understand) or the seller has good status amongst eBay money derivers.

That was one of the points I brought up, Paul. We really need to understand what's involved before we get into that... And if we do get into the whole Inc. thing (along with 501(c)7 or 501(c)3 status) we'd need to make sure there's enough money coming in on an annual basis to pay for those filings. It doesn't do any good to have $200 in donations rolling in each year if the costs of doing business are $400!

The logo is straight off the web page. I once tried for a while to add the "users'" part, but it was beyond my meager image editing skills and tools (I couldn't find a similar font, IIRC). If someone could add it for me, I'd greatly appreciate it (and make it the default image for the web page). As people can see on the web page, the source image is close to 500x150 pixels in size, I shrunk it to form the smaller 200x66 image. If I replace the images on the web site, the images displayed here will be replaced also.

iomoon-- You definitely need to do a search under the stamps category on ebay for your favorite topic. A chance of lifetime for you.

My advice is to stay away from charging dues for now. Focus on fun events (Paul's suggestions are excellent-- I'll gladly help lead a discussion of the German area) and publicity to get more people interested. If a need for some $$ arises for a particular expenditure, ask if there is anyone interested in paying for what needs to be paid. Better to "due" it that way than to have "discussions" (arguments) about how best to spend the dues.

Bill That logo is quite nifty but, it implies we are affliated with or an official ebay club. Of course that is sadly not the case. That logo must have been left over from the early days. I think it really should have the "user" after ebay before anyone starts brandishing it about. Shouldn't be much of a problem with even my limited HTML skills.
As noted the flyer which Sheryll posted and the one which appears on the EUSC web page, shall be melded together to form a more enticing message to those who would view the flyers.

Alec, that's a great offer! I just had a phone chat with Mitch and we've decided that we'll accept for the club. Unfortunately, eUSC doesn't have any facilities for handling money, with no bank accounts and no treasurer (Hey, want to be Treasurer?). We'll have to work out how best to handle this before we can do the transaction. I'll suggest that we spend at least a portion of the money toward promoting the club and this board at the upcoming APS StampShow in August.

On that note, do we have any graphic designers in the house? How would you like to design an eUSC poster that we can hang up behind the check in booth at StampShow? I visualize something that's 11x17" in color with lettering that's large enough to read easily at 8-10' (2-3m) distance.

Milenko, your offer is wonderful as well! CYE re: details...

Thanks Mitchell for getting this dialog started. It's nice to see the ideas coming out, and actual concrete action toward some of them. :-)

eBay EMAIL Policy is Idiodic!

I have several eBay 'Reviews' regarding stamp collecting. A reader emailed me (thru eBay) with a question. When I try to respond (through eBay), I get an error telling me that eBay 'sometimes' blocks emails when they do not involve a bidder/buyer & seller relationship. THIS IS COMPLETELY IDIODIC!. Now, the original eBay user who successfully emailed me will think that I am rude for not responding.

And, while I am ranting: WHY DO I HAVE TO SIGN IN EVERY FIVE MINUTES WHEN I GO TO DO SOMETHING NEW SUCH AS POSTING TO THIS BOARD, POSTING TO AN EBAY DISCUSSION GROUP, SEND AN EMAIL TO ANOTHER EBAY USER, ETC.

I can only conclude that eBay's technical staff are truly incompetent!

First time here in over a week and I may not be back in time to see any response. I'm at the library as my computer is still malfunctioning. I got it running last night just long enough to print a phone list I needed for my stamp club, fortunately stored in an ancient database that runs OK in Safe mode and mininmal colors. Then it froze again! Anyway, I'm way behind on this board and have missed the last week or two. Additionally, other distractions in coming week or two may keep me from addressing computer woes, but sooner or later, I'll be back.

I did look at the essay lot that Anne missed--sorry you didn't get them, Anne. Of course, not knowing which bidder you were, I don't know how close you came. (Forgive me if I missed a post where you told us.) I still much dislike eBay converting to private auctions. I still think there are other ways to address the problems they are supposed to solve.

I'm looking forward to the opportunity to create some interesting covers based on the upcoming rate change. It appears that for the first time in recent increments, they have declared the official first day of the new rate to be a Monday instead of a Sunday! The new Forever stamps started life at 41 cents, so they won't change this time, but there are opportunities to do things with the semi-postals that change values, if you think about it.

Back later, don't know when--

Continuation of Eusc meeting I agree the meeting topic should be continued. Some very useful ideas have been forthcoming.

I'm not a frequent seller I must admit but when doing so I will try and remember to add a link directing others here to this board. I'm also happy to distribute flyers at local UK shows I attend.

Mitch Maybe dues are not something that can be charged to a virtual stamp club. However I'm willing to donate $100 into the pot for Officers of the Eusc to decide how it can best be used. Be it advertising in a philatelic journal or whatever. I don't want a receipt or need a breakdown on how the money is spent. If this jesture enables just one novice collector to come here, seek help and get some expert advice then it will be worth it.
Over the years I've received a lot of help from regulars here and other groups worldwide to which I belong. Philately is not always about what one can get out of it but also what one can put back in.
Safe to state the aim is to try and attract collectors here and hopefully either learn from them or educate those that need help and as Anne stated we need to publicise the board and club more.

Millenko's offer to save the daily board messages deserves a vote of thanks. The board itself is fine but as many know the 200 posts limit ia real pain. Especially when people are away for any length of time and may miss interesting posts.

Richard W If you want your items to be seen "automatically" by ebayers in the US then yes you would have to re-list in .com. I believe .uk listings are seen via .com but only if the viewer uses advanced search worldwide listings. Many UK sellers now will no longer list on .uk Not because the items can't be found but simply because ebay's tinkering has once again been a bad one. If and when that policy will change I don't know.

Hawkandheron Zeppelin cards are popular but their value can vary from just a few $ to several thousand. The best way to get some honest advice is by doing as was suggested earlier post a link to a scan here. Instructions on how to do this are in the yellow box below. If you get stuck or need help making the link just come back and ask for more help.

Sorry I've not been around to contribute to the meeting.

UK sellers - I think I was asleep when the posts were made about listing on eBay.uk meaning that stuff doesn't show up on eBay.com. Have I got that right?

I ask because I listed a few items last night (under books and collectibles, not stamps), and a keyword search this morning on eBay.com did not bring them up.

So (sorry to be tiresome and repetitious) does this mean that I'll have to pull them off eBay.uk, pay the listing fees and re-list on eBay.com if I want them visible on the US site? If so, whose stupid idea was that ...Groan ...

bstampco: I was told at AmeriStamp Expo in February that eBay does not presently have a stamps category manager. Helen Chang has been reassigned; yes, she was at The Virtual Stamp Club's booth for one day during Washington 2006.

hawkandheron Hi there and welcome to the board you have certainly come to the right place someone here is sure to give good advice. Because this is more of a posting board than a chat board you might have to wait a couple of hours or so for an answer so check back from time to time. If you are able to make a link to your cards then that will help. You can find out how to in the yellow box below.
cheers

Club meeting

I don't like the idea of a private forum for eusc members. My experience in other non-philatelic forums shows that the participation is not the same and tends to slow down unless the topic attracts many people, and philately isn't really massive. Also I like to see non-members posts.

The 200 post limit is annoying. So, I'm willing to save the board on a daily basis and arrange them in my website (or in another page) as a service for the club. It will take some time since I must set up the webhosting service and the html for the site. It's not a big deal for me since I'm a software engineer and work with this stuff everyday, although I've never set up a complete website with accounts and all, so it will be useful to learn.

Maybe this board should be open for everyone and the archive restricted to members?

If this is OK for the rest of the people, I'll start the process ASAP.

Hi all. I am a total novice collector but my sister collects holiday postcards and gave me two to research. What I have is 2 German Zeppelin post cards dated 8-21-37 in ink. Both have a red stamp with zeppelin in the middle and text “Zur Erinnerum an en Besuch Zeppelinhalle am dem Lufschiffthafen followed by Deutsch Zeppelin-Reederei Frankfurt am Main. Is this a cachet? If not, what is it? I am asking for your expert help to correctly describe these post cards. I am looking for some fellow eBayer help to ensure my listing does not mislead anyone.
Both cards were not mailed so no stamps, only the front photos. One is a photo of Graf Zeppelin tying to its mast; the other has a great color picture of the Hindenburg lounge.
The Graf Zeppelin card also has a clear black cachet/pre-printed stamp that reads ‘DZ-R Zur Erinnerung an den besuch der ZeppelinHalle auf dem Luftschiffhafen Frankfurt Rhein-Main’ Can you tell me how to describe these correctly or give me a web site to help? I was referred by one expert seller to the reference book by Scott kept at large libraries. Would others agree to go borrow that?
Thanks in advance,
Debra

Welcome to the eBay Stamps Chat Board!

It would be greatly appreciated if chat board participants
provide LINKS to pictures
rather than posting them directly to this board.

Here's how to post a LINK. Thanks.

Does EBAY have a stamp person? I thought there was an EBAY stamp person at the big show in Washington,DC. Does the EUSC have an EBAY Rep?
