Here are some recently acquired items, with an emphasis on postal cards. Here is a 2c Grant postal card, uprated with a 2c Aeronautics commem from 1928 and a pair of 1 1/2c imperf Harding stamps from the 4th Bureau series. Lengthy message in German on the reverse.Total postage is 7c, 3c for the international card rate and 4c for airmail from London to Germany (a surcharge rate that was in effect from 1-1-28 to 6-18-32). Postal cards sent via airmail from England or France to Germany (i.e., non-Zepp items) prior to the start of clipper service in 1939 have been very difficult to find. Here is a 1c Jefferson US postal card, uprated with 1c Franklin and also franked with a 10pf Crown & Eagle stamp from Germany, canceled with the German Marine Schiffspost No. 15, SMS Kaiserine Augusta, while it was in the Philippines during the Spanish American War. The message is datelined Manila. It appears that the send was unsure whether he was going to mail the card via the US postal system or the Marine Schiffspost system, although I don't know whether civilian mail could be sent through the US postal system as of Sept. 7, 1898, when this card was mailed. Full message on back. Here is another 1c Jefferson postal card uprated with a 1c Franklin stamp, this one mailed from Hoboken NJ on June 12, 1897 to Germany. The reverse shows a nice picture of the Statue of Liberty, making this a nice pioneer post card. Here is a 2c Franklin postal card uprated with a 6c Teddy Roosevelt and two 1c Washington stamps from the Libery issue, paying the 10c international airmail rate for postal cards (in effect from 6-1-54 to 7-1-61). Here is a nice cover sent from Toronto to Germany in January of 1897, franked with a 5c Victoria stamp, from the German Consulate. An albino embossed seal of the consulate is on the reverse flap. Finally, here is a HK Treaty Port cover sent from Canton to the US on Dec. 22, 1902. Of interest is the fact that the Code "B" in the CDS is inverted. I also found the flag receiving cancel from Boston on the reverse interesting. I have watched with interest comments regarding the forthcoming new edition of a US flag cancel catalog, as I have quite a few flag cancels on my collection of covers going from US to Germany. Can anyone shed some light on the flag cancel on this cover?
